"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

UK producer Renslink calls IM103 his first effort focused on the dancefloor, but it belies a lifetime steeped in it. This is prime material for the most advanced of DJs.

The first cut, Static, blends heavy, droning atmospheric sound design with the half-time template of dubstep, complete with jungle vocals. Before reaching the first half, however, it goes into a healthy techno gallop, making the track a perfect set opener if drama is your thing.

From that we go into the three-on-two mindbend of In My Mind, full of beautiful rhythmic trickery and rave culture nods in the sampled female vocals.

Cenotaph feels like a Pinch & Mumdance dub that they kept for themselves around the Control/Strobelight era, all rolling, persistent kick, dubbed-out dready vocals and dystopian hoover.

In Touching The Void we find a moment of drama and relative tenderness, as cinematic strings and choir soar over a busy rolling breakbeat. Occasionally, the proceedings are punctuated by a reese bass and bleeps fill that keep it fresh (an you on your toes).

Closer Silence is a mutant dembow wobbler with alien vocals by Nivalis, like dancehall for after the nuclear apocalypse, when we’ll have all the extra limbs we’ll need to dance to music like this.

Kicking off the EP on A1 is "Liquorice." The track starts with captivating ambient sounds and playfully develops into a breaky tribal adventure, paving the way for the EP title-giving track that is "Aqua Pura." You can feel the power of crystal-clear water bursting through your speakers, and tension building while the track develops. Mechanical noises and sci-fi sounds decorate the bass-heavy yet also playful baseline

◆ Capiuz returns on the label with a new club-ready album that slashes through a nocturnal forest landscape with fluorescents and violent bursts of color. Taking its name from a series of paintings called “Bande di Fiori Notturni” by Italian artist Alice Visentin, the project goes through a wide array of influences and bpms. Terra Nuda (naked earth) acts as an opener fusing a foggy drone with drum breaks and dance hall syncopations.

◆ Capiuz is the experimental dance project of producer and performer Luca Favaro. Based in Italy, his genre-merging production focuses on exploring rhythm and sound design in a club context. Often leaning towards live performances, Capiuz’s music takes the form of a heavy hitting outburst filled with heavy bass, breakcore progressions and granular textures.
