I think it would be fair to say that some people whose out put is quite regular suffer from quantity over quality. For Malik Kassim, the Amsterdam based producer also known as Retromigration, this just is not the case. With three records out already this year and plenty more on the horizon including a full LP on Wolf Recordings, it seems Kassim is determined to debunk the quantity over quality theory and prove you can very much be both. His records do the speaking for this argument, with his styles ranging similar to modern greats like Folamour and Kerri Chandler massively influencing off funky and up beat rhythms yet still maintaining that punchy four to the floor techy beat and its in these influences we move on the Phonica Mix 96; Retromigration takes us on a trip through many styles here across jazzy beats, funky rhythms, pumping house and melodic piano riffs, its very much a day in the Sun kinda party mix and he definitely helps us imagine that setting here.

Naomi is a Berlin-based DJ who has a perfectly calibrated passion for House music and an ability to create unpredictable atmospheres and energy in the club. Growing up and competing as a House dancer has helped shape and hone Naomi's appreciation for the smoothest of house grooves as a DJ. In the past 6 years, she’s been making a name for herself by playing in the city’s most renowned clubs like Tresor, Watergate, Golden Gate and Heideglühen and can be spotted regularly on HÖR, the notorious bathroom streaming service.

Last year she kicked off a new residency at the not-for-profit radio station, Refuge Worldwide, where she holds down a monthly show specialising on all grooves and moods of house music. Changing tempos from soulful and deep house to driving and powerful is what she has become known for, and she continues to bring the love of Chicago and Detroit house music to the Berlin dancefloors.

It's always very touching to find musical testimonials. Over 20 years ago, my booking agency asked me to record this mix. In 2002, I was very inspired by the San Francisco scene. There were some great labels, DJs and artists there... What makes me happy is that I could still play 95% of those records. Time goes by too quickly, but I'm still as passionate and involved as ever. It was a great period, we played 100% vinyl, I scoured the record shops... This mix is an opportunity to look back on a past with tons of great memories.
