The Andrew Bayer odyssey continues. 2019 has seen the Berklee-educated artist reach impressive new heights; reinventing the calm, informed electronica of his third studio album ‘In My Last Life’, into a set of club-focused remakes with ‘In My Next Life’. First heard at Above & Beyond’s annual Miami Music Week party at the Old RC Cola Plant way back in 2017, ‘Hideaway’ emerges from the shadows, a fitting title for an elusive set opener from the globetrotting trio of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki.

Teasing the masses once more, Above & Beyond opened their storied Group Therapy 250 set at The Gorge with ‘Hideaway’. The track subsequently became a regular feature at arena shows across the UK and US during the band’s record breaking ‘Common Ground’ tour. An assertive, cavernous, melodic burner that perfectly set the tone for a very big night of dancing in a very big room.

2018 came and went, still no release! The keyboard detectives on the band’s official Reddit theorised and extrapolated potential reasons. Then comes Anjunabeats Volume 14, the band’s popular two-disc compilation series. There’s ‘Hideaway’, sitting alongside another brand new A&B original, ‘Anjunafamily’.

Two of Anjunabeats’ most prolific talents return, both riding high on the ABGT350 wave as ilan Bluestone & Spencer Brown join forces for a formidable new EP.

"Parallels began as I explored synths, sounds, textures, and melodic motifs from my early days (even childhood) in dance music. I broke out all my old synths both analog and virtual analog, and dove back into classic sound design, wondering why I had put them down in the first place. This reconnection with my past taught me quite a few things, but most importantly: I learned to take things a bit less seriously, and not give a fuck.

I’ve always found it challenging to merge my two passions in electronic music: the dance floor, and the more heady home listening environment. That’s why I specifically decided to challenge myself further and include both sonic landscapes in one track: Parallels. It starts as a 100BPM idm-infused half time hard techno (in my eyes) track, that gradually builds to an electro-slammed full on classic trance revival moment. This is the first time I’ve fused both sonic passions of mine into one whole piece, and I’m very sure this will not be the last!

The EP sweeps across my musical mood board of everything from hyper emotive string sections augmented by modular synth patterns, to more whimsical tuned percussive ear worms. The most exciting part for me was the self discovery of understanding that these two wildly different sides of my musical curiosity can exist in parallel with each other, harmoniously and non conflicted. I proudly present Parallels in its entirety today, and look forward to exploring this concept even further."

Debuted at Group Therapy Weekender 2019, Above & Beyond’s new bi-annual camping festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre outside of Seattle, this angel sounds far from heaven sent.

Another example of Above & Beyond’s recent attraction to tougher, tenebrous sounds this year (consider ‘Waltz’, ‘Distorted Truth’, ‘There’s Only You’ and the resurgent tech-trance sounds of Genix on Anjunabeats), ‘Another Angel’ is released worldwide on Friday, November 22.

Warping minds and dancefloors from New York to Prague, accompanied by a titanic visual that’s unnervingly similar to Dr Who’s most terrifying antagonist, ‘Another Angel’ samples the band’s own 2011 single ‘On My Way To Heaven’ from their acclaimed album ‘Group Therapy’.

The unmistakable and usually strident vocal work of Richard Bedford here sounds almost plaintive and cowed, surrounded on all sides by shuddering, cascading bass. Things culminate in a breathtaking drop that somehow manages to be quintessential Above & Beyond and something totally fresh at the same time.
