Hercules & Love Affair’s new album ‘The Feast Of The Broken Heart’ (released 26th May / pre-order here georiot.co/3mv7) sees another musical reinvention from ringmaster Andy Butler - delivered by an impeccable new line up.

The ever-revolving collective led house music’s resurgence with club anthem ‘Blind’ in 2008 (Pitchfork’s record of the year), and 2014’s line up is another roll call of exceptionally talented vocalists. Brits nominee John Grant’s ability for translating hardship into elegance is writ large on ‘I Try To Talk To You’ and ‘Liberty’; Rouge Mary, whose deep, spiritual voice is hewn from a gospel education; Belgian singer Gustaph whose counter tenor takes lead on the single ‘Do You Feel The Same?’ and smoky voiced virtuoso Krystle Warren, who was introduced to Butler by Grant, and sings the provocative ‘My Offence’.

Andy Butler comments: “I wanted nasty basslines, stormy, bleary-eyed sounds, fiery, rough, tough and ragged old school house productions that sounded almost techno. I didn’t want polite, I wanted aggressive.”

This aesthetic coupled with tales of emotional triumph makes for something tough yet soulful. Meaningful house music that IS pop music and can speak to the most musically adroit of tastes.

One of dance music’s finest live acts Hercules & Love Affair are set to announce a full run of summer shows and festivals. They tour Europe in May.

Do You Feel The Same?

Following the release of ‘Watergate 15 mixed by Kerri Chandler’, Watergate Records offer up a vinyl sampler, featuring the exclusive new material on the comp from the man himself, and remixes from Voyeur, La Fleur and Lola Purple & Maine.

Kerri Chandler has been one of the most prominent names in electronic music for over three decades now, so it was no surprise to see him enlisted for the reputable Watergate compilation series this year, following mixes from the likes of Sebo K, Ellen Alien, Tiefschwarz and Solomun. Here the imprint drops a vinyl sampler of fresh Chandler material made for the compilation, with some stellar remixes from some rising artists thrown in for good measure.

First up is ‘Mama feat. Jerome Sydenham’, which takes on a classic Kerri format of swinging rhythms, a cosseting chord sequence, jazz-tinged low-end and piano lines, and Sydenham’s spoken word vocal stylings. ‘Think Of Something’ follows, upping the energy slightly with a gritty saw-wave bass hook, stabbing pad samples and an amalgamation of chopped and processed vocal snippets.

Kerri’s protégés Voyeur step up on the first of the remixes, reworking ‘Mama’ into a groove-led number, fuelled by bulbous subs, loose percussion and an ever-evolving dynamism achieved through multilayered melodies. Rising star La Fleur turns in an interpretation of ‘Mama’ next, the Swedish producer tips the focus towards raw drums and penetrating bass, while smooth melodies brilliantly meander around them, creating a classy dance-floor focused workout. Then last up to round off the package is Manchester duo Lola Purple & Maine’s remix of ‘Think Of Something’, the pair deliver an intriguing remix very much unique to them, we see processed vocal snippets, growling bass, infectious hooks and warm pads all skillfully blended to create a stunning closing record.

The much-loved Take It Back Mix, a Sandy Rivera and Jose Burgos (aka Soulvision) production, has repeated soft funk-infused riffs behind husky vocals and bass kicks, alongside their Dub version. This package also features Sandy’s Original Mix and the bouncing 09 Remix. UK producer Mark Knight showcases his blossoming sound in his warped Toolroom Boys Mix with its wobbling bassline. West London’s Slip 'n' Slide was one of the UK’s original house imprints. Starting in 1994 with early releases from artists such as Blaze, X-Press 2, Masters At Work and Kings Of Tomorrow, they set the benchmark for house music in the UK. Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan (aka Blaze) were one of Slip ‘n’ Slide’s most prolific acts, with ‘Do You Remember House?’ written and produced by the pair. One of a number of records where Hedge playfully dons his Palmer Brown alter ego for vocal duties, this new remix package showcases this enduring classic with three new versions. Up first, Italian duo The Cube Guys re-work Bob Sinclar’s classic remix, maintaining Bob’s signature Parisian flare with a modern edge for today’s dancefloors. Up next, Harry Romero’s ultra-refined, irresistibly grooving remix follows, before Seamus Haji’s Big Love edit closes out the package, gloriously bumpy with hypnotic loops that allow the vocal to really shine.
