“I’ll Be Seeing You” was composed by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal. Published in 1938, the song was inserted into the Broadway musical Right This Way, which closed after fifteen performances. Much has been said about the resemblance between the tune’s first four lines and a passage within the theme of the last movement of Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. It was re-introduced in the 1944 movie also titled I’ll be Seeing You, starring Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotton. The emotional power of the song’s theme, and its powerful lyrics became an anthem for those serving overseas, during World War II. The recording performed by Bing Crosby became a number one hit that year.

Written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) and first recorded that year. It has often been associated with Ray Charles, a native of the U.S. state of Georgia who recorded it for his 1960 album The Genius Hits the Road.

“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was composed by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. It was included in the movie The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by Judy Garland in that movie. It would become Garland’s signature song. The song is number one on the “Songs of the Century” list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The American Film Institute also ranked Over the Rainbow the greatest movie song of all time on the list of “AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs”.

It has been recorded by many outstanding singers and instrumentalists, ranging from Louis Armstrong to Carly Simon. The list includes Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Ben Webster, Nina Simone, Thelonious Monk and, of course, Duke Ellington himself.
