WHAT DO SOUNDS WANT is a 5-episode podcast about sound, or better yet, about listening through a series of questions and intuitions Radio Papesse and ALMARE have shared while working together on Life Chronicles of Dorothea Ïesj S.P.U., a sci-fi film & audio novel written and directed by ALMARE.

Throughout the episodes of this podcast series, with the help of artists, scholars, and researchers, we will attempt to unfold the themes behind the film. It will be an intense journey, moving between listening practices as tools to shape the world (or our perception of it), the socio-political economy of sound and data, questions about sonic fiction and sonic weapons.

Johannes Paul Raether is fellow artist at Villa Romana. With his system of identitecture he creates unlikely characters that have taken on lives of their own and multiple identities: among them, Transformella, who first appears in 2010, Protektorama a kind of world healing witch born in 2011 and Swarmwesen, the one who's born in Florence on the occasion of the exhibition 'Renaissance resistance. Resistance renaissance. Renaissance resistance. Resistance renaissance' at Villa Romana in 2013. 

Each figure has its own set of skin colour, material, fabric and performative object and they anticipate future identities and involve the visitor in confrontations about self-determination, gender and the future that are magical and critical in equal parts.

His performances and installations have been shown at institutions including the NBK, Berlin; the Kunsthaus Bregenz; Platform Garanti, Istanbul and the Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn. He regularly writes for Texte zur Kunst and was one of the operators of the project space basso in Berlin.

We talked about Swarmwesen, about Florence as a  market place as a site of linear history and overlapping local and global memories and identities.  

In the frame of Unmapping the renaissance, on March 13th 2015, at 3 pm, Johannes is going to perform a walk-tour guide in Florence, from Piazza della Signoria to Ponte Vecchio.

A creative audio documentary exploring questions of voice and listening from scientific, artistic, philosophical and political perspectives. 

Who – and what – do we deem capable of having a voice, and worthy of being listened to? And how does the way we listen affect our ability to hear the conversations that are going on around us? Samar Nasrullah Khan is philosopher whose work is focused on developing strategies for “listening to the other – the human, non-human, thing”. This creative documentary explores Samar’s work listening to, and with, cows, and the experiences which have shaped their fascination with ideas of voice.

Anne Jeppesen is a Copenhagen-based creator with a focus on immersive experiences for radio, museums and XR media. She co-directed the VR-film A Vocal Landscape that premiered in Venice Immersive in 2023. A Vocal Landscape is still touring festivals – recently it was part of SIGGRAPH VR Theatre, and won ‘Best VR’ at the PFCAT. Anne’s main arena is working with the plasticity of the audio space and she’s is always seeking out new ways of combining the cosmic vastness with micro details from our every day world.

PortaMi è un racconto collettivo in cui prospettive personali, paesaggi sonori, interviste e scrittura creativa si intrecciano in un lavoro a più voci, disegnando un attraversamento della città che mette al centro i soggetti e le loro storie.
 
Dieci persone di età, percorsi e formazioni diverse fra loro hanno esplorato il tessuto sonoro della città e hanno dato forma a un racconto multifocale che attraversa Firenze al di fuori dei tracciati più comuni in un percorso tra possibili soglie che si attiva nel momento in cui ci si ferma a pensare: quali sono le “porte” della città?

PortaMi - Racconto Collettivo Urbano dalla città di Firenze

Paul Vandenbroeck - Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp, and Research Group IMMRC, KULeuven - has studied North African textile art since 1991. Although initially trained as an iconologist, specialized in late medieval figurative art from the Netherlands, he got fascinated by these anonymous but unique weavings from Morocco to Libya. Especially the Tunisian/Libyan bakhnougs with their sense of emptiness and their microscopic motifs, heavily laden with multiple meanings and their almost complete abstraction, have retained his attention. Although there is no discourse about textile art in North Africa, and although their makers were always illiterate rural women without any form of schooling, this art is bearer of an encyclopedia of feelings, ideas, passions, fears, moral maxims, and, yes: ‚philosophy’. 

In this interview Vandenbroeck tries to decipher this abstract code and gives us some insight into this astonishing, almost magic, art of weaving.

Villa Romana in Florence is now displaying 25 unique pieces of textile art from the collections of Paul Vandenbroeck and especially of Renata Anna Menzel (Vienna), who has gathered during two decades the largest, and most important, museum-quality collection in this field.
