Making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Plans & Plants’ is Retza. 

Hailing from Australia but now calling the UK home, Retza has firmly etched his place in the deep and organic global movement. With well over a decade of production experience, the London resident has showcased his exotic sound via All Day I Dream, Balance Music, Kindisch, SATYA, Sound Avenue and his own Retza imprint, amongst others. Also an accomplished DJ, Retza has travelled the world showcasing his unique selections and exquisite programming skills, while also holding a weekly residency on London’s highly regarded Bloop Radio. 

Now, following a remix for YokoO’s SATYA imprint to end the year, Retza opens 2024 making his Refraction debut with a groovy rendition of ‘Plans & Plants’. Taking a more direct dancefloor approach, while maintaining the elusive spirit of the original, the Aussie native constructs a fluid rhythmic core, complemented with meticulously manicured percussion, acidic motifs and timely vocal fragments. It’s this amalgamation of sound which ultimately makes for a versatile and club-effective version; a brilliant re-imagination that’s likely to find favor with a broad range of DJs across the coming months.

Chiari - Plans And Plants (Retza's Maybe I Should Mix) [REFRACTION]

The Robot Scientists are Markus Schneider and Stefan Maurer, two music connoisseurs, DJs and vinyl collectors from Saarbrücken, Germany. They are two of three behind Emerald & Doreen Records which they founded in 2011, with releases on the edges of Italo Disco, Dark Disco and Indie Dance. 

They also run the premiere and DJ podcast series Something Spæcial since 2013 which is one of the leading indie dance channels on Soundcloud. As DJs, they spin a highly energetic dark & brightly bouncing „all killer, no filler“ mixture of melodic, futuristic and psychedelic Indie Dance, Playa Tech and Space Disco.

Russian-born and Belarus-based, Alexander is at his musical peak after recent impressive releases on labels such as Seven Villas, Greyscale, and spclnch, now adding REFRACTION to his list. With sharp sweeps and evolving noises, Alexander delights us with his haunting aesthetic in a memorable piece of dub techno.

Genning - Room 3 (Alexander Bogdanov Remix) [REFRACTION]

With his “Dub Echoes” EP, Genning brings his dubby and raw sounds to REFRACTION RECORDS for the label’s fifth release.

Closing the EP, New Zealander artist SUBSET makes his debut on the label with a refreshing interpretation of “Inside Train.” Describing his style as “four parts dub, one part deep house, equal parts minimal and techno, dusted with an organic blend of evolving atmospheres and live filtering delays,” SUBSET delivers exactly this in his remix.

Genning - Inside Train 1.0 (SUBSET Dubtrain Remix) [REFRACTION]

Also making his REFRACTION debut with the lone interpretation of ‘High On Your Own Supply’ is Dubtommy. 

Dutch producer Tommy Lemmers aka Dubtommy first emerged in 2021 with ‘Covenant’, a three track showcase for Germany’s Mixcult Records which earned praise from renowned artist Andrey Pushkarev. 

Immediately noted for his immersive soundscapes and evolving dancefloor constructions, the Amsterdam resident would go on to record a series of new projects for Mixcult across the next two calendar years, while also adding Electrolux Real MusiQ, Limitation Music, Superordinate Dub Waves and his own Stately Records imprint to his discography. 

Always selective in his projects, Dumtommy now arrives on Refraction in fine fashion with his first release of the year, a deep mesmerizing take on ‘High On Your Own Supply’. 

Opting for a decidedly more minimal and straight forward approach, Dubtommy brings the production closer to the dancefloor with billowing tonal themes, wispy atmospheric refrains and a mature no frills approach to arrangement.

Anatolian Weapons and The Spy approach electronic music from different angles, one rooted in hypnotic techno rituals, the other in raw electro and post-punk energy. Both craft sounds that thrive in the shadows of the dancefloor. On the A-side, Anatolian Weapons delivers three cold, hypnotic cuts. "Trapped" opens with heavy EBM percussion and a buzzkill bassline, setting a tense, mechanical tone. "Further Spiralling Down" sinks deeper into darkness with a grinding low end, tight drums, and electro-tinged claps, forming the side’s relentless highlight. "Apathy Through Shock" closes with pounding, catatonic rhythms and a mournful, otherworldly melody, pushing the listener into disorienting depths. Flipping over, The Spy’s raw, electro-driven energy takes hold. "Same Blur" channels sharp electro beats with a punkish sneer and cosmic synth lines. "Falling", featuring The Spy’s own vocals, leans into melancholic new wave, pairing bouncy rhythms with bittersweet melodies.
