بدأت حكاية كانديا منذ أن صعد على متن قارب مطاطي، من ميناء الجايلات الليبي برفقة 84 مهاجرا، بينهم ست نساء وطفلان. يريدون الوصول إلى إيطاليا بحثنا من مستقبل أفضل. بعد مضي ساعات وجد كانديا ورفاقة أنفسهم في البحر لا سفن إنقاذ ولا طعام ولا ماء، إنهم معزولون تماما وسط الموج والرياح.

Tales from the Border - Trailer

Tales from the Border begins in Senegal. We look out across thousands of kilometers of Atlantic Ocean. As the waves crash, migrants who have tried and returned, and those who still have hope, talk about what it is like to dream of a better life in the Canary Islands and Spain.

Feel the fear after 10 days drifting in a pirogue on the Atlantic Ocean and passing ghost ships full of bodies, wondering if you will ever make it to land.

Even after arriving, the tales of poverty and hardship make some wonder whether the dream was worth it.

Senegal – Crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean (Episode 1)

Tales from the Border Episode Four takes us to an informal migrant camp in the woods not far from the Serbian border with Romania. Here we meet a group of men – most from Syria or Iraq – who have decided to leave the official camps to squat in an abandoned house in the forest. 

While they cook over a campfire the men talk about how the police and army from various countries work to push them back, and the trials of their journeys after leaving their home countries.

Serbia – Camped in the woods (Episode 4)

In Episode Five, we arrive in the Serbian capital Belgrade with András Léderer from the Hungarian Helsinki Committee and Idro Seferi. Near the bus station in the center of town is a spot known as ‘Afghan Park’ where people gather waiting to catch a bus to the border on the so-called ‘Balkan route’. 

In this park we hear from Amir, a pharmacist who fled his country after militias threatened to kill him. Traveling with Amir are his wife and two small children. We also meet a renowned lawyer, Nikola Kovačević, who talks about why he is helping migrants who have been pushed back at the borders.

Serbia – ‘Afghan Park’, Belgrade (Episode 5)

High in the Italian Alps, more and more migrants attempt to take remote and dangerous snowy paths through the mountains to evade police detection and make it into France. Many stop for a day at the volunteer refuges in towns like Oulx before taking a bus up to the border at Claviere to begin the trek on foot in the dead of night. Temperatures often drop below freezing in these mountains and migrants are given warm clothes and boots by the volunteers who want to try and prevent more dying or getting injured on their journey.

Alpine border Italy – Crossing by night (Episode 6)

Jean Gabriel is a mountain man. He has walked the mountains of the world and now tries to make sure that the migrants who walk his mountains arrive safely in France and are well looked after. For those migrants who do make it over the border a refuge in Briançon awaits. Some migrants stop a few days or weeks here before continuing their journey on to other parts of France, the UK, or elsewhere in Europe – migrants like university student Ayoub from Morocco, who hopes that in Europe he can make his parents proud and one day have a family of his own.

Alpine border France – Ayoub’s tale (Episode 7)

Calais. A city where the roads are lined by high fences topped with barbed wire. In Episode Eight we have arrived in this northern French port, where migrants can see the white cliffs of Dover, their destination, just the other side of the Channel. Those who have run out of money try their luck on the lorries, others hope to pay smugglers thousands of euros to cross in small boats. The police patrols are everywhere. Migrants here are regularly evicted from camps in the scrubland, by the side of the road, or in the forests, but still they stay and wait for the day their luck might turn.

Calais – The last crossing to the UK (Episode 8)

Olawale Abdulmajeed tried to start a life and a career in Ukraine. After the war, returning to Nigeria is not an option: Olawale has lost hope in a country where there are no jobs for the youth, where its own education system is not appreciated, and where the rich are placed above the poor. Here, foreign credentials count more than Nigerian university degrees. Olawale's expectations are dampened: Why should he return to Nigeria while everyone else is trying to leave?

The Escape Diaries: "There is nothing for me back home in Nigeria"

You could say that migration is in Sicily's DNA. The largest island in the Mediterranean and a gateway to Europe for people crossing from North Africa, it has been a melting pot for centuries. Migrants continue to arrive on the island in their tens of thousands each year, after risking the dangerous Mediterranean journey in unseaworthy boats. Across the island migrants from Africa, South Asia and elsewhere have formed well-established communities, running businesses and becoming part of Sicilian society. There are also migrants who have no legal status, scraping an existence in abandoned buildings and exploited by unscrupulous employers in Sicily's main industries – fishing, farming, hospitality and tourism. In this special podcast edition made in September 2022, InfoMigrants catches up with migrants from different parts of Sicily who are living very different lives, and we hear from some long-term residents who are trying to help newcomers with the many challenges they face.

Sicily – An island of migration

Le jour, Yacko Oktaviana enseigne le commerce à des étudiants de Jakarta, la capitale. Le soir, c’est Yacko tout court qui débarque et elle éduque par le biais du rap. Engagée contre la culture patriarcale, le harcèlement sexuel et pour l’égalité des genres, cette artiste de 44 ans, tatouée, non voilée, mère célibataire, divorcée est d’une des rares femmes MC d’Indonésie. Portrait.

Rare femme MC d'Indonésie - et la seule à avoir sorti 3 albums, Yacko occupe depuis plus de 20 ans la scène underground de Jakarta, capitale dynamique et tentaculaire de l’archipel, située sur l'île de Java. Une longévité qui a sculpté un flow calibré pour son rap, teinté de dubstep et de drum & bass et dont les textes n’ont qu’une seule et même ambition : donner plus de pouvoir aux femmes.

Engagée contre la culture patriarcale, le harcèlement sexuel et pour l’égalité des genres, cette artiste de 44 ans, tatouée, non voilée, mère célibataire, divorcée, bouscule les conventions dans un pays, le premier pays musulman du monde, où les femmes sont souvent reléguées au second plan. 

A Marseille, quelques heures avant son concert au Babel Music Xp aux côtés de Tuan Tigabelas, jeune pousse du hip hop indonésien, c’est donc l’emblème de toute une génération que j’ai rencontré. Une vraie hip hop girl, à l’allure juvénile avec ses longs cheveux bruns coiffés d’un bonnet, fan de rap autant que de graff et de sneakers, une femme de convictions bien dans son baggy !

Sessionlab - Yacko : icône féminine et féministe du hip hop indonésien

C’est en mars 2019, qu’Éric (prénom d’emprunt), originaire de Côte d’Ivoire, entre pour la première fois en contact avec la rédaction d’InfoMigrants. Il venait de fuir la Libye et était hébergé dans un foyer pour migrants de Médénine, dans le sud de la Tunisie. Depuis ce jour, Éric a toujours gardé le contact avec InfoMigrants. Leslie Carretero est allée le retrouver en Tunisie, où il vit toujours. Dans cet épisode, le jeune homme de 26 ans se confie sur les raisons de son exil, son passage en Libye, sa vie en Tunisie et son rêve d’Europe.

Voix d'exils #1 Éric : "Je n'ai pas le droit de rebrousser chemin"

Amadou a 22 ans. Il est arrivé en France en 2018 après être passé par le Maroc et l’Espagne. Très vite, le jeune homme originaire du Mali commence à travailler pour Chronopost à Alfortville, en région parisienne. Estimant être exploité par l’entreprise, il monte un piquet de grève devant le site de Chronopost avec d’autres collègues. Il en devient rapidement le porte-parole. Dans cet épisode, Amadou raconte son exil, son travail en France et les mois de lutte pour obtenir sa régularisation ainsi que celle de ses camarades.

Voix d'exils #2 Amadou : "Je ne m'attendais pas à vivre ça en France"

Awa (prénom d'emprunt), 23 ans, vit en France depuis 2017. À l’été 2019, la jeune femme originaire de Côte d’Ivoire répond sur Facebook à un appel à témoins lancé par la rédaction d’InfoMigrants. Elle est alors interviewée par Leslie Carretero. Un lien se crée rapidement entre les deux femmes, qui échangent régulièrement par message. Une relation de confiance s’établit et Awa accepte instantanément de raconter son histoire derrière un micro. Dans cet épisode, Awa revient sur sa fuite de Côte d’Ivoire après avoir été excisée et contrainte à se marier, sur son douloureux passage en Libye où elle a dû se prostituer pour survivre, puis la traversée de la mer Méditerranée et ses difficultés en Europe.

Voix d'exils #3 Awa : "Mon corps ne m'appartenait plus"

Alain (prénom d’emprunt) a pris contact avec la rédaction d’InfoMigrants en juillet 2018. Il était alors bloqué au large de la Tunisie à bord d’un navire commercial qui l’avait secouru quelques heures plus tôt. Depuis ce premier échange, Alain n’a cessé d’envoyer de ses nouvelles aux journalistes d’InfoMigrants. Leslie Carretero est allé le rencontrer en Allemagne où il vit aujourd’hui. Dans cet épisode, le jeune homme de 30 ans lui raconte les raisons de son exil, son passage en Libye puis en Tunisie, sa traversée de la mer Méditerranée et son arrivée en Europe.

Voix d'exils #4 Alain : "La mer s'est déchaînée sur nous"

En juin 2019, Issiaga, originaire de Guinée, envoie un message à la rédaction d’InfoMigrants. Bloqué en Libye, il raconte qu’en prison, des gardes libyens lui ont tiré dessus. Blessé aux pieds, Issiaga ne peut plus marcher. Leslie Carretero, qui garde le lien avec lui, perd sa trace quelques semaines plus tard. Le jeune homme de 26 ans sera en fait secouru en mer Méditerranée par l’Open Arms. Arrivé en Sicile, il reprend contact avec InfoMigrants. Leslie Carretero est partie à sa rencontre dans le sud de la Sicile, où il attendait son transfert pour la France. Dans cet épisode, Issiaga raconte les causes de son départ de Guinée, l’enfer qu’il a traversé en Libye et ses 19 jours à bord d’un navire humanitaire.
