PEGASUS

This piece for strings and wind band was inspired by Pegasus, one of the most recognized creatures in Greek mythology. He was the son of the Olympian God Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa, and is depicted as a majestic winged horse.

The Birth of Pegasus - It is said that Pegasus originated from the blood of Medusa's neck as she was beheaded by the hero Perseus. After his creation, Pegasus was captured by Perseus, and he later served under the Olympian God Zeus.

First Flight - This part of the piece describes the experience of Perseus taking Pegasus on their first flight.

Soaring Over the Sea - Pegasus is often associated with water.This is because Pegasus was supposedly born near the springs of the ocean, in addition to being the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Pegasus had inherited the ability of creating water streams wherever he'd struck his hoof.

Song of the Muses - One of the myths concerning Pegasus is that he once was sent by his father Poseidon to stop the mountain Helicon from moving without his permission, due to the sweetness of the Muses' song.

Reaching the Summit - When Pegasus reached the summit of the mountain Helicon, he stamped his hoofs on the ground, causing springs to turn into flowing fountains of inspiration. When poets drank the water, they were filled with inspiration and creativeness.

Diplodocus is said to be one of the largest dinosaus to ever have lived. This plant munching beast weighted approximately 20 tons, and could measure up to 30 metres from head to tail. The dinosaur lived in North America during the Jurassic period.

This piece describes the carefree nature of a Diplodocus.
A life with no natural enemies, and with an exceptionally small brain.

Marie Curie (born Maria Sklodowska) was a pioneering physicist and chemist who made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of radioactivity and nuclear physics. She is one of the most famous and influential scientists in history and remains an iconic figure, especially for her accomplishments as a woman in a male-dominated scientific community. This piece is focusing on Curie's importance as a scientist and as a role model.

"Radioactive Discoveries" was commissioned by Svenska Brassbandförbundet for the National Swedish Brass Band Championships in 2024. Radioactive Discoveries - Brass Band (NotePerformer Mockup)

"Headland Fantasy" was commissioned by Nes Janitsjarkorps and conductor Thomas H. Verket for the Norwegian Concert Band Championship in 2024. This version for brass band was commissioned by Svenska Brassbandförbundet for the National Swedish Brass Band Championships in 2024.  

The piece is a musical description of the municipality Nes, in Viken county, Norway. It consists of four parts: Raging Rivers, Whispering Waters, Resonating Ruins and Ghostly Grounds. The first two parts describe the characteristic river meeting in Nes, while the last two tell of the mystery and myths surrounding Nes' church ruins.  

The musical material in the work revolves around a hymn composed for the piece, called Headland Hymn. In the course of the piece, the hymn is processed in different ways, in different guises. The music moves between dancing melodies, beautiful chorales and technical passages, before it all culminates in a chaotic encounter with the haunted cemetery.

This piece for concert band was commisioned by Lilleaker Skoles Musikkorps, and conductor Tomas Austestad. A big thank you to Austestad for invaluable encouragement and guidance during the process.
OMNIA was commissioned and written in 2021, during the global pandemic. The piece describes being able to seek refuge in music. The process started by writing a chorale for Lilleaker, which further developed into a larger contect piece based on this chorale.
The musicians are challenged through contrasting sound expressions, technically demanding passages and lyrical virtuosity. During the piece, several variations are introduced, before the chorale is fully presented in the piece's magnificent conclusion.

All the pieces in this suite depicts paintings and the story behind them.

1. "Kvitebjørn kong Valemon" is a painting by the Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen. Kittelsen is famous for
his nature paintings, as well as for his illustrations of fairy tales and legends, especially the ones in Norwegian Folktales (Norske Folkeeventyr, 1899) by the Norwegian folklore collectors Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe.

2. "Soria Moria Slott" is a painting by Theodor Kittelsen, as part of the 12-painting series “Soria Moria Palace”. 
The illustrated children’s book, featuring Kittelsen’s own text, was published for the first time in 1911.
The full title of the painting is "Langt, langt borte saa han noget lyse og glitre" (Far, far away, Soria Moria Palace shimmered like Gold), but it is often referred to as "Soria Moria Slott".
For many people, Theodor Kittelsen’s portrayal of the Ash Lad who sees Soria Moria Palace in the distance has become a symbol of both hope for the future and the dream of succeeding in life.

3. "Hardt le" is a painting by Christian Krohg, one of the great Norwegian painters of the realist
movement. He was a champion of justice and freedom of expression. Krohg painted members of the
working class in the Kristiania of the 1800s with empathy and a desire for change.
This particular painting shows a fisherman on his ship, in the midst of a raging storm.
This piece for brass band depicts the painting and the story behind it, focusing on the unpredictable
forces of nature, and the ocean's raw power.

4. "Fra Oslofjorden" is a painting by romanticist painter Hans Gude, one of Norway's foremost
landscape painters. Gude's early works are of idyllic, sun-drenched Norwegian landscapes which
present a romantic, yet still realistic view of his country. Around 1860 Gude began painting seascapes
and other coastal subjects. This particular painting from 1866 shows the magnificent view from the Oslo Fjord.

5. "Skrik" is a painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The agonized face in the painting has become one of the most iconic images in art, seen as symbolizing the anxiety of the human condition. Munch's work, including The Scream, had a formative influence on the Expressionist movement.
Munch’s famous motif apparently started with a walk he took with two friends around sunset. The colourful
spectacle provoked a strong reaction in Munch, while his friends remained indifferent. What arouses angst
and despair in one person may be insignificant for another. The figures in the background seem to hold the
key to the image. Submerged in conversation or in their own thoughts, they continue walking without
turning around.
