Rising Osaka-based composer Seiho meticulously crafts electronic music in futuristic fusion. Collapse is the full length album amalgam detailing dance floor / Rave dominators, and hidden doorways into hyper-nuanced free jazz & musique concrète. Collapse is a representation of where we’re going: the symbiosis between music, technology, and human potential. Leaving Records befriended Seiho when touring Japan in 2012, and since then they have continued to remain close contemporaries exchanging influences - bridging west-coast scenes with Japanese electronic music culture.

Kelli Cain and Brian Crabtree --the couple behind http://monome.org, their incredible devices, and the immense community therein --came by Better; for Living on February 19th to play a live show of their new musical suite "Hollow Moon Rings Like Bell" while on their west coast winter exodus tour.  Attached is the aforementioned set; recorded with special thanks to Fabian Aguirre and Maya Pisciotto --of http://www.theunderstory.co/ -- and mixed by Brian Crabtree. It will be released later with edited footage of the setup and show.

This episode explores GLIA's 'muqarnas'. Over the hour, Dan and Jonathan (GLIA's offline name) discuss the impact the Persian language had on the album, improvising with electronics, creativity in prefab culture, and the depths to which instrumental artists encode themselves in their music.

This episode celebrates monome's 10 year anniversary by exploring the work of Sean Hellfritsch (http://seanhellfritsch.com). Sean is an accomplished musician and filmmaker (http://encyclopediapictura.com), having recently released 'Some Sort of Wave Portal' on Leaving Records as Cool Maritime. He is as warm as the California sun.

Much of the featured music is from Sean's 2012 self-released 'Tea Time Travel'.

Sean Hellfritsch (Cool Maritime): SOUND + PROCESS #2

I've always been a fan of tracks made purely on a mixer, from the ethereal sound of no-input mixers through to making dub with some faders and effects sends. So I thought I'd put something together in that vein.

My favourite chord is the minor 9th: as a jazz player, it's hugely handy, that 9th also being a leading second, or the minor ninth containing a minor triad on V and a major seventh on III. Lots of places to go and move from.

And I wanted to do something recorded. I am a somewhat lapsed flautist.

Inversions consists of seven flute notes: Db3, F3, Ab3, Bb3, C4, Db4, F4. Each is placed into an instance of Granulator on a channel in Ableton, and played in an infinite loop, the grains crossfading. A moderate amount of Convolution Reverb is applied to each track.

The final track was recorded in a single take, live. For three minutes, I rode the volume controls on an Ableton Push. (For those of you who insist you can only control two encoders at once: you are very mistaken; there are a few at-least three move fades in there, often in different directions). I tried to move between the various chords contained in those notes, often creating motion where there may not have been any to begin with. That makes it sound mechanical; it was very much an improvisation with what I heard in the speakers. It swells to the full chord, before sharply cutting back to a second, and then disappearing into the reverberant space.

I rather like the result.

Made a short ska/dub piece and copied into six other lanes. Added up to 3 effects in each including reverb, delay, chorus, tape, flanger etc., but also eq'd each one to bring out a different sound. Finally got a nice mix that was recognizable but sounded completely encapsulated by variations of itself. Still looking for just a bit more I ran it through a different chorus while tweaking wet/dry mix and distortion mix live. Then I took this before and after pair and set each in a new channel and automated pan controls to sweep sides for the length of the tracks. Tools including but not limited to Cubasis, Audioshare, Aum, Frobulator, Muckraker, Nebulizer, Swoopster, AUFX:Space, Dedalus, Novation, Duplicate and Zero Chorus...yikes!! It sounds only slightly overworked ? ...  @disquiet
