ATLANTA, GA – Mausiki Scales, keyboardist and founder of the Atlanta-based Afrobeat/Funk ensemble, Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective, releases “The Traveler”, a single from his upcoming album, Long Memory. Vocalists on the single include the talented Milkah Sadiki-Yisrael, Trishla Wooten, Kehinde Jones, Shawna Floyd and Eugene VI. “The Traveler” features the extraordinary musicianship of Russell Gunn, Brian Hogans, Quinn Masonry, DeWayne Martin, Ali Barr, Yakou N’guessen, Alex and Marcaelis.

ATLANTA, GA – Mausiki Scales, keyboardist and founder of the Atlanta-based Afrobeat/Funk ensemble, Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective, releases “The Traveler”, a single from his upcoming album, Long Memory. 

Delivered as a mantra, repeated with focused intention, “The Traveler” was created as a soundtrack to embrace the inward journey of healing intergenerational trauma for Black families. In West Africa, more specifically the traditional Yoruba culture, the song tradition known as Oriki provides a template where songs can be used as a healing tool. It plays a custodial role within families and social groups, strategically using community insight and wisdom to guide and maintain balance in the lineage. Orikis guides families and communities towards a healthy existence, as it directs listeners to themes of historical relevance, cautionary insight, and an in-depth understanding of kinship. Slavery, Jim Crow, colonialism, land loss, and lack of financial stability stilted and distorted intergenerational conversations, has denied many Diasporan Africans this critical healing practice. “The Traveler" is an invitation to journey back to our true self through intentional healing.

Kal Jazeera is a queer Palestinian creative currently based in naarm by way of potawatomi land Chicago. They orbit many fields across performance but the heart of their work is grounded in community. Their sense of joy, depth and love was distilled in all our conversation and something you will feel throughout their work. 

𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞: Kal started working on this piece in June before the siege and continued genocide happening in Gaza. They shared some words about this ahead of the piece and hope Palestinians in the diaspora find a sense of solace and connection in the work. From the river to the sea 🇵🇸

Directors Lisa Flanagan and Brian Moore discuss the performance project "Institutionally Aggravated" with WHIV-LP 102.3FM founder MarkAlain Dery on the program NOLA Matters. The ensemble-devised performance imagines an exchange between Bayard Rustin and Brendan Behan, two historic civil rights advocates from opposite sides of the Atlantic with opposing ideologies and methods and for achieving equality, self-determination and freedom. It was performed by Xavier University of Louisiana's Performance Studies Laboratory March 8-10, 2018.
