One of the last pieces of music we completed before shutting down The Bunker Studio San Francisco, in 2014, was a remix for the wonderful Sally Dige. We spent many hours working on this remix the way remixes used to be made: sampling sampling sampling & sequencing sequencing sequencing. Nothing but several hardware samplers, synthesizers, an MPC2000xl, and a big ole mixing desk was used to make the end result you hear.

Introducing the Townhouse RMX by INHALT: the most comprehensive impulse response library of the legendary AMS RMX 16 reverb processor from a very legendary studio. Townhouse RMX features 194 expertly sampled impulse responses of every major algorithm of the RMX 16. Unlike other impulse responses of the AMS, Townhouse RMX features various onboard EQ settings for each decay time. The RMX 16 drastically changes its decay and reverb characteristic depending on the EQ settings of the onboard low and high EQ, so we sampled each decay time at numerous EQ settings for a deep and detailed representation of the legendary reverb. 

The AMS RMX 16 we sampled comes from the infamous Townhouse Studios. Townhouse studios was originally built by Richard Branson to be the hub of Virgin Records.  This very unit was used on breakthrough records from Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Phil Collins, Duran Duran and many other major recordings from the 80s and 90s. Interestingly, the AMS itself, with its legendary NonLin setting was designed to emulate the gated drum sound developed at Townhouse on Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight”.

Compared to the actual hardware, these impulse responses, to our and the ears of other major producers, exude the realness, depth, and three dimensionality better than DSP emulations of the RMX. During critical listening tests conducted in several major recording studios (with real AMS RMX 16 in the fx rack), we were throughly impressed with the accuracy of the impulses in completely capturing the unique sound of the RMX 16. 

The impulse response library is organized in an easy to read manner and all relevant information is in the file name itself. For example, Plate_0.1s_-2L-2H.wav let’s us know instantly that it’s the Plate algorithm, at a .1 second decay time with a -2 setting on the Low EQ and a -2 setting on the High EQ. Because of this organization, it’s very quick to find the exact setting needed, just like punching the big square buttons on the actual unit itself.

Alles (Kontravoid Remix)

INHALT, German for “content”, is the main project of producer and songwriter Matia Simovich. The group was founded in 2009 by Matia Simovich (Body of Light “Time to Kill”, SRSQ “Unreality”, Riki, Peter Baumann “Machines of Desire”) and vocalist Philip Winiger as a vehicle to discuss the atrocities of neo-liberal capitalism. Their first release was a split 12" on World Unknown Records in 2011 followed by three EPs on Dark Entries Records, a remix EP on Emotional Especial and a Part Time Punks Session on Cleopatra Records.
