Enigmatic musician / composer / poet Jan Van den Broeke has been sharing music from his home in Gent, Belgium since the 1980’s. 

Through an array of projects and aliases [see absent music, June 11, the misz, canto de mudo, to name a few…] Jan has found space to express his own sound in the world. Recent retrospectives 11,000 dreams [stroom 2017] and lost and latest [ee tapes 2020] demonstrate the idiosyncratic sensitivity of his music – an endeavour he describes as ‘exploring a dream.’

This mix integrates field recordings and vocal samples with music from friends and inspirations past / present. Serene, it prompts introspection and catharsis. There is something indescribable and emotive here – perhaps arising from the pairing of songs and samples – either way, it’s an honest beauty.

Angela from pure person press has kindly put together this mix entitled ‘Taipei Telenovela’. Paying tribute to the music of Lim Going, ‘a pure person’ was a welcome silver lining in 2020. You can find out more about that project through the inis:eto site. Below are some words from Angela to be read alongside the mix. Hope you enjoy. 

“I have lived in a Taipei Telenovela for the past 2 months. To my delight I have found that Mexico City and Taipei belong in the same dreamscape. It’s as if time has aged these two cities at a similar speed and now they mirror each other: in how the rain is soft but constant, in the morning steam of a food stall, and how nature makes its green and inescapable presence known. 

The first half of this mix is meant to heal. After a bad scooter accident in Oaxaca I was forced to revisit the lessons I learned in Taiwan: To be still. To accept. To feel it all and let it go. This mix features field recordings of grass, spiritual female vocals, and songs that remind you to breathe. 

The second half of this mix is meant to romance. You can’t escape music in Mexico City. A man, worn thin, will stand on a corner and sing a song so intimately you know it heals him. A mariachi band will find you soaked and hiding from rain and say: “This song’s for you guapa.” The DJ, after the bar has emptied, will play record after record of Mexican  love songs while you dance fanatically alone.  I’ve learned new lessons in Mexico City: To dance. To live passionately and nonsensically. To fight back. This mix features saxophones, desperate male vocals, and songs that remind you to love. 

I never got to say goodbye to Taiwan. I’ve never been able to say a true goodbye to anything that really mattered in life.  I’m so grateful for the space Taiwan and Mexico have generously allowed me. This mix is my hello and goodbye to both cities. Please breathe and dance through my Taipei Telenovela with me.”

Been savouring the dregs of a summer that, as of yesterday, is OVER. But empty glasses need filling, and the recent in-ear companion for this endeavour comes courtesy of Airbear. 

Hands down one of Seoul’s best, Aaron is consistently out there doing the do. Selection here is unsurprisingly next level - tempo bending and totally seamless, legit mind nourishment. One for the deep, ethereal, kosmische heads. 

Bittersweet to see summer go, but really enjoying this mix – hope u do too.

First inis:eto mix of ’22 comes courtesy of dear friend Seiji aka Pallaksch.

Seiji is an active member of the Tokyo deep listening kru, ideala. Thanks to an introduction from Pianola, Seiji and I started hanging out during his regular trips to Okinawa. A true min’yo head, he introduced me to lots of beautiful folk music and local matsuri celebrations, including a pretty sketchy tug of war contest in Haebaru.

This mix, entitled ‘Okinawa Omoro’ was originally recorded to accompany a friend’s exhibition in Naha. Consisting of vinyl from the Okinawan islands recorded during the 60’s//70’s, it’s a unique and poignant snapshot into the distinctive min’yo sound.

Civility costs nothing and neither do these mixes. Storm Eunice edition comes to you from the nicest of all strangers, Silvia. 

For some time now, Nice Strangers has been a go to deep listening show on noods radio. It’s host, Silvia, is one of the kindest heads around and can be found most weeks sharing sounds at honest jons. Her Sagome parties in London curate and connect some of the most thoughtful musicians around. While the respective Sagome label has been making space for all things avant and experimental.

This mix is certainly one of the deepest I have shared. Thoughtfully textured with sensitive arrangement of vocals and melody, its one for finding catharsis in the remnants of winter. Hope u enjoy.

a lullaby from the sleepless mind behind the always killer kashual plastik. frans weaves ancient futures of sound in a way only his discerning ears could. intra-acting voices, fragile and distant, entangle and engage. punk melodica, folk insomnia, and all the hums and echoes that meander in between.

what occupies the void separating the seconds of lost light between late summer days?

a prescription confesses little from this distance, but sound casts its own worlds in the spaces between. in this mix minou oram takes u to her cathartic place.

grunge drenched psychedelia ascends to affirming and redemptive punk wave, before all unfolds into dazed nostalgia. be sure to check minou oram’s gone-too-soon femdex series and ever excellent SVVENIR show on LYL.

jack and elaine’s mixes feature consistently in many of our lives. 

it means a lot to share a recording from them. I don’t know how to express it. maybe like diane once said, it’s a secret about a secret. the more it tells you the less you know.

this one features music that seems to capture the gravity of one place in exchange with a new space and force. a vaporous melange of melancholia and euphoria. metronomic and infinite. that dose of diazepam, guiding the slow death of a year.

too many legends in the zoggs! ++ an unending tide of radio headz broadcasting their souls in the noodio. i shit you not, against the hyper-saturation of psycho-mania dj narcissism, you’re the people I admire most. sharing and enjoying what matters just for the love of it.

one noods resident with a knack for sharing super great music is angelkin. her monthly transmission is, hands down, one of my favourites. always full of original sounds and lucid narratives. 

no shock then that what marissa shares here is in a world of its own. experimental, melodic, and drenched in emotive realism.

starting the year with a mix from bologna’s carolina martines. been fortunate enough to see all kinds of scenes in mickey zoggs, but few moments musically resonate like carolina’s roll through set after the normcore party back in july. it still pops into my head every now and then. full room transfixion.

The first inis:eto mix comes from AZ, owner of Revelation Time in Osaka. Revelation Time is a store renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and careful curation, with each record passing Eiji's ears before reaching your hands. It's a place of dialogue and discovery, a brilliant room in a busy city. 

The following is a beautifully abstract and healing selection, casting light on some lesser heard music from Japan. Enjoy.

On Thursday evenings Yohei Kunitomo aka Pianola can be found at Forestlimit in Hatagaya. Here he and the ideala crew spin deep on one of Tokyo's finest sound systems. 

A mindful selector, Yohei has committed much of his life to finding and sharing music. Alongside ideala parties, Yohei runs the avant-garde and experimental section at HMV Shibuya, organises various pop up record fairs across Tokyo, and hosts a consistently excellent show exploring thought provoking soundscapes on London's Soho Radio. 

Yohei has recorded his inis:eto mix from an ideala session at Forestlimit. Reflective and affirming, it is a fitting soundtrack for late summer introspection.

pianola

Greenpoint NYC is home to William "Speculator" Burnett, a label running producer, collaborator and DJ. Most weeks he can be found at the thing or hosting his longstanding WTBS show on The Lot Radio. 

Will’s label, WT Records, is a consistent source of excellent music. Focusing on overlooked and emerging talent, it has cast light on Nao Katafuchi’s Japanese New Wave, Teachers’ vocoder pop, Tagwell Woods emotional acid, Paul Woznicki’s experimental synth works and Ex Vivian’s bedroom folk. 

Balancing challenge with reward, Will’s own productions are diverse and often depend on the alias he adopts. His music has been released on various labels including the trilogy tapes, L.I.E.S, and rush hour’s ‘no label’.

Navigating through a broad range of emotionally charged dance music, this mix is a worthy companion for keeping warm on colder evenings.

Shortly before starting the inis:eto parties, my friend jack sent me a record in the post. The record was a collaboration between two musicians. It became the soundtrack to finding my feet in a new place, and has been ritually played when setting up the sound for inis:eto parties.

With this in mind, I am really happy to share a mix from one of those musicians – suzanne kraft.

From early excursions on dublab, to more recent work with melody as truth, there is a lot more I could say about SK. For now, it’s a big thank you.

Inspired by reflections on family, friends and nature, this mix is uniquely sensitive and subtly optimistic. Adrift in their environment, unhurried guitars meet expansive ambience and into-the-wood folk, reminding everyone of good times past and better days yet to come.

Silver linings have been hard to come by recently but, against what has been a relentless year, some defiantly transcendent music has been shared.

Elin’s recent releases as loopsel are a testament to this and a reminder that, even in these bleak days, music still has the power to re-enchant life.  

This mix is truly beautiful - a deep dive into fragmented folk poetics. Welcomingly transportive, soul-nourishing, and lyrical. The purest Gothenburg magik!

Tom has been thoughtfully curating the selection at his physical and online store for a few years now and has nurtured the anf concept into a highly recommended label, with a range of side projects like the tabi tape guerrilla mix series and  monthly (not to be missed) NTS excursion. 

Exiting from the mundane sameness of LD3.0 and reaching out into the mystic, this mix is an engulfing listen that intertwines the textured and tranquil with all out raw experimental jammers. Songs that somehow render the ongoing goings on obsolete, even if just for an hour, dive in!

Luīze details an enveloping, introspective, and emotive soundscape that documents field recording trips to Florence, alongside birdsong imitations, and the undulating harmonic complexities of sacred chorus and ancient folklore. 

At points, this mix feels totally beyond music, while at the same time retaining all the intricacies of feeling that only music can articulate. Deep trïp nrg.
