“The Weather of the Heart”

Today’s Pair Test was unlike any before.

Virtual Exercise: Weathering the Heart
—A trial where each student’s heart appeared as sky and wind.

Principal Allen announced:

“Your hearts will form clouds, summon winds, and strike lightning.
Through that weather, try to resonate with your partner.”

The students gasped.
It felt as though even the deepest parts of their hearts would be revealed in the sky.

Rio and Souta.

The moment they entered the virtual space, the world changed color.

Around Rio stretched an endless blue sky.
Its warmth and clarity seemed to welcome anyone who approached.

In contrast, Souta was surrounded by a storm.
Black clouds split, lightning raged, winds howled.
The fear swirling in his chest had manifested entirely as sky.

Rio tried to walk forward.
But each step closer was beaten back by the wind.

“Souta, I can’t reach you.
The wind… it hurts so much.”

Souta held his shoulders, head lowered.
It wasn’t the storm that stole his voice.
It was his own heart refusing to let him speak.

“I might break things again.”
“If I open my heart, I might be abandoned.”

Those whispers became wind, lightning, and darkened sky.

From afar, Rio cried through tears:

“Souta! Listen—
I’m not angry, I’m not afraid.
Speak, just one word!”

But Souta’s throat tightened, his breath trembled,
and words shattered before they could take shape.

Then—

Principal Allen’s voice echoed through the virtual sky.

“Wings of light do not dwell in those unhurt.
They are born only in the moment
when one, still afraid, chooses to reach toward another.”

His words were quieter than snow,
yet strong enough to pierce the storm.

Souta clenched his fists.
The fear did not vanish.
But the fact that Rio was waiting filled him with joy.

He drew breath within the storm.
With a voice barely formed,
he still spoke straight from his heart.

A Poem in the Wind

“My heart is a storm.
I thought it would break anything it touched,
so I kept it closed.
But your voice was blue,
reaching deep into the wind,
stopping me.

So now,
I just want to say—

Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

I love you.”

The moment he finished,
something inside Souta quietly unraveled.

Rainbow Wings.

The storm’s roar ceased.

Clouds cracked, light poured through,
and a rainbow arched gently across the sky.

Then—
a white feather drifted down.

It touched Souta’s back,
and faint light settled there.

Rio covered her mouth with both hands,
smiling through tears.

“Souta, it reached me.”

They stepped closer,
and for the first time,
held hands within the storm.

The Weather of the Heart needs no correct answer.

It doesn’t have to be clear.
It doesn’t have to be calm.
Even storms need not be escaped.

What matters is—
the courage to reach out, with your weather as it is.

That single step
creates the strongest light in the human heart.
