Sound Documentary: The Sounds of Autumn and Winter in Valbrona (binaural)

"The Giubiana is a traditional celebration having great popularity in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, and particularly in Brianza, as well as in the region of Piedmont. During the last Thursday in January, bonfires are lit, on which the Giubiana (i.e. a puppet of an old witch) is burnt. (...) In the days before the festival the villagers collect all that's combustible (wood, hay, paper etc.), and put a pyre together. After a procession through the village street, the Giubiana is placed on the pyre and set on fire. The rite is both symbolic and propitiatory. The Giubiana is burnt to ashes to terminate the winter, so that the pyre flame is believed to predict an abundant harvest in the upcoming year. (...) In Canzo the celebration is particularly well-constructed; other symbolic and traditional characters are seen during the procession along historic centre, for example Anguana (a Celtic water fairy), the Òmm selvadech (the Wild Man), the Bear and the Hunter, the Executioner, the Candelabrum-bearers, the 'Bun e Gramm' (good boys and bad boys, that are pro and contra the burning), the so-called Lawyer of the Lost Causes (from Milan forum), the soothsayer, the Scarenna men, the Woman of the Street, the historical Firemen, the Shepherd, the Woodsman, the Carriage of the Peasants, the Sledge, and others. The "Cumpagnia di Nost" organizes the festivity, in which the town is adorned with black and red hangings (for mourning and bonfire); the symbol of the festivity is the red leg of the Giubiana; also the music of the drums and of the baghèt (lombard bagpipe) is mournful, but after burning it becomes cheerful because the evil has been eliminated; traditional costumes are worn. The atmosphere is sacral and joyful, thanks to the Celtic and Christian symbolism."

Sound Documentary - Giubiana, Canzo 2023 (Como, Italy)

"The Ginèe (January) is a cloth puppet filled with rags that represents the winter: every 31st of January, after the coldest days of the season, the puppet is taken through the streets of the village, accompanied by tin cans that reproduce the traditional noise that accompanies the burning of the Gineè. The tradition, which unites several municipalities not only in the Lake Como area, has been handed down for several generations and is especially enjoyed by little ones, amused by the chaos and noise of the bells and tin cans. This tradition has ancient roots: it symbolizes the awakening of nature after the winter months, beating the earth to arouse the seeds and finally burning the "Ginèe", thus defeating the winter. As the flames rise high in the sky, people drink mulled wine and eat traditional sweets".

Sound Documentary - Gineè, Mandello Del Lario 2023 (Lecco, Italy)

“The carnival of Cegni, a village of Santa Margherita di Staffora in the province of Pavia, is held twice every year: during the winter (the Saturday before Lent) and in the summer (16th August) which is called Carnevale Bianco (White Carnival). The same rituals are carried out on both occasions: the procession, dancing which accompanies the wedding of the “brutto” (the ugly one) and the “Povera donna” (poor woman), dinner and the evening dance. The Carnival parade seems to be a direct parody of the wedding march and is made up, in addition to spontaneous characters, of a group of stock characters, each one of which interprets a special role (…) These main characters are joined by the piffero and accordion players (typical instruments of this valley, the essential characters of the carnival) and dancers (…)”.
