“The Abandoned Deity”

Deep in the depths of the Atlantic ocean, the ruins of an immense underwater city were found. The area is nigh unexplorable due to the unnatural water currents and pressure, not to mention pockets of acidic liquid trapped inside buildings that can corrode metal in seconds. From what we’ve been able to observe, however, every inhabitant of this civilization once worshipped an oceanic god, but disappeared.

And within an ancient temple at the center of the city, built deep into the Earth’s crust, resides the object of their worship… chained up and restrained. This Abandoned Deity can control time, and we believe that due to some sort of disaster many years ago, the god lashed out and accelerated time in the city so far that every citizen decomposed and every building crumbled in an instant.

Within the chamber it is trapped in, the linear flow of time is warped, causing those who enter to leave younger than they were before. The Abandoned Deity is constantly struggling against its restraints, stuck immortal in this one spot. Glyphs throughout the chamber seem to indicate that should the chains be broken, the Abandoned Deity, in its lonely grief, shall raise the city out of the ocean, sit atop its highest tower, and wreak temporal havoc on the world.

Every day, the chains get a bit more strained, and the Abandoned Deity nears freedom. It will happen eventually, it will be catastrophic, and as of now we know of no way to stop it. We can only hope that the world can survive when the clock reaches its end.

When I envisioned “Abyssal” initially, I imagined a song that depicts the tumultuous rush of underwater currents, rising and falling but never letting the listener escape the suffocating ocean depths. The result is a song with a thick, oppressive atmosphere and tense string samples that thrash the listener about through subtly uncomfortable passages and moments of reprieve. All the while the gurgling basswork alludes to a creature on the ocean floor, waiting for you.

“The Crawling Chaos of the Depths”

Found in immense labyrinths and caverns, this gigantic spider-like creature of gem and rock rapidly skitters through underground areas. It is believed to be one of the fastest beings alive on Earth, and can catch up to prey kilometres away in under a minute. When hunting down unlucky spelunkers, its gems glow bright and seem to illuminate a path that the Crawling Chaos traverses through at incomprehensible speeds.

It acts as the guardian of many subterranean locations, many of which store precious artefacts. It is believed that long ago, they were trained by ancient peoples to guard their most valuable possessions. However, there is not much reason for them to continue to hunt, as these underground ruins have long been pilfered.

The only way to escape a Crawling Chaos is to outsmart it, as its speed makes running a certain death. Hiding, tricking, and trapping are your main options, although it is not easy, as the Crawling Chaos displays high intelligence and will use those same tactics to catch you. It can easily camouflage into cavern walls and often leaves entrapping webs around.

While fighting is not a recommended option, as it can trample you before you even have the chance to take a stand, organized efforts to kill a Crawling Chaos have revealed interesting details. Its crystalline body is Second Pandora in origin, and it takes great care to keep those gems polished. Combined with neurological scans on its brain, we are led to believe it is quite sapient… which makes one wonder if it hunts for a more calculated purpose than protecting territory.

“Hazy Maze Cave” has the wildest energy of any song on Chapter 2, a feeling that suits the theme of being chased through a maze, I’d say. It’s a non-stop thrill ride that jerks you around with its jagged, splintery sound design and overwhelming collage of elements, contrasted by the funky melody at the core of the song. The skittering flows here are frenetic and difficult to wrap your head around, jam-packed with wild fills and off-kilter percussive patterns.

“The Final Element”

Most beings spawned from the Second Pandora are malicious, or at least dangerous. This simple creature is not. The product of a fool’s attempt to achieve immortality left what is believed to be one of the man’s household plants as a small, gelatinous blob of… something. While plants are, in fact, alive, they aren’t sentient, and the resulting Final Element is nothing more than a bouncing ball that craves close physical contact and attention.

While it is simple-minded and entirely passive, it will never meet a grizzly fate at the hands of a predator. The man who created it did succeed in achieving immortality, just not for himself. The Final Element is completely impervious to all danger, the passage of time, or even the heat death of the universe. It is named as such because it will inevitably be the last thing to exist for eternity, someday.

All it does is smile brainlessly and seek affection. Attempting to isolate any part of its body for testing results in the detached gelatin dissolving and reappearing back on the Final Element. All things considered, it has seen therapeutic uses, just as any therapy animal would. It is incredibly difficult to contain, as it can very easily slip out of anything and is predisposed to wander the world aimlessly.

We have many questions about how such an immortal being was created, but it seems we may never answer any of them due to the nature of the being who ended up immortal… quite a cruel joke. It’s kind of cute, at least.

By far the oldest song in all of Book of Sorrows, “Flaam” has waited three years for its due release. It’s markedly simpler in scope and more optimistic than the rest of the EP - even anything else in the trilogy, but there’s a strong melancholy lying underneath the silly sound design and jaunty glitch hop flow. It feels vast and nostalgic, yearning for a simpler time that you can’t go back to. But the charming groove is undeniable, and maybe it’ll bring those hopeful days back for just a bit.

“The Smog Broker”

As more and more of the Earth becomes desolated and withered in the face of rapid industrialization, humanity sought out more ways to generate energy and discovered a way to reuse the recently deceased using Second Pandora magic. These Smog Brokers are reanimated corpses retrofitted to generate energy from their decomposition, and the process creates approximately ten times more pollution than the second most polluting energy source.

They are commonly seen wandering wastelands and massive factory compounds, remotely generating energy for massive corporations. They have no need to sustain themselves and can wander just about anywhere on Earth, something that is actually quite a danger. The sheer amount of unbreathable air one spews can render an entire area uninhabitable for any life should the Smog Broker reside there too long.

Eventually, as is body rots, it stops producing energy and fully decays. This leaves behind an excess of discarded machinery and disgusting, moldy flesh sludge, a substance that is incredibly difficult to clean up. Smog Brokers have a six to eight-month-long lifespan before succumbing to degradation, and in that time, can create enough pollution to kill an entire forest.

While there have been attempts by some to sequester these beings, the corporations that create them have done nothing to stop them from invading natural areas and ruining them. It is difficult to estimate how much of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by Smog Brokers, but we suspect it could rise to as much as 45% of the planet someday if left unattended.

“Second Hand Smoke” is one of the most oppressively dark tracks I’ve ever made, a feeling accentuated by the suffocating, gritty basswork. No part of the song lets up in its feeling of malaise… hell, even the lightest moments feel like a desolate wasteland of dust. Before long, you’re thrown right back into mechanical drums, wheezing steam, and uncomfortably close sounds of strained breathing. The seeping basslines are intertwined with jittery flows, encompassing the unfeeling malice of the factory.

“The Grief of the Sky”

Intangible energy in the air, perfectly sentient just as we are. It absorbs the atmosphere and resonates in suit, creating a cyclical motion throughout the world. It is karma, and it is everywhere.

Once a free-flowing wind over Earth, as the world grew twisted, horrors began to encroach, and most crucially, humans embraced evil, the energy that was once healthy has become yet another Second Pandora danger. Manifesting as electricity that crashes into the Earth during cosmic thunderstorms that paralyze humans en masse, it is our penance for all the wrongs we have done.

These supernatural disasters, which have begun to strike with more and more frequency, leave entire towns filled with hopeless people stuck as statues where they stood. The energy strikes from the sky, speeds through wires, saps humans of life, and dissipates into the Earth, where it is circled back into the air to repeat the process when the next storm occurs.

Avoiding these storms is nigh impossible, although surviving one can be done. You must steel yourself, anchor your body to an emotionally significant object, or hold someone who cares for you. And above all else, you must be free of anger, fear, and hate. Karma is only painful if you are deserving of it. If you just feel a small static shock, you have lived. Those who did not make it through the storm are still alive, although unable to do anything until they starve to death. While they may have engaged in misdeeds to deserve karma, it is a horrible fate regardless.

“Crying Wire” brings the emotionally strained themes of Chapter 2 to a head with my most melodic track to date. It’s a careful balance of heartbreaking melodies and walls of noise, a tone that feels as despondent as it does hopeful… a real fight for survival. That mix of perseverance and despair is shown in the drops, fusing soaring future bass with heavy neuro trap. In the end, the song closes out in serenity… things are still to get darker, but maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
