For our first edition of Lofi Snacks, we welcome Komachi: a Japanese artist living in Europe with a love for lofi’s warmth and easy-going nature. Komachi opens up the Snacks series with two tender and nostalgia-laden tracks, the second in collaboration with Czech beat-maker, Enoki. Smile and hit play for a 10% happier day.

Komachi is a new arrival on the lofi scene and an accomplished artist who values his anonymity. He’s traversed many electronic styles over the years, embracing a natural curiosity along the way. When you hear Komachi’s music, it’s easy to appreciate this enthusiastic approach. It’s just pure and honest fun.

After meeting in a Hong Kong cafe last fall, Metic and Norvik floated the idea of a collaboration that’s become A Fleeting Dream in Waking Life. Blurring the borders between Norvik’s masterful ambient soundscapes and Metic’s expressive bluesy guitar, the album frames four beautifully paired-back instrumental beats with three graceful ambient pieces. What we hear is what we feel: powerful memories and emotions that override our conscious. Almost like a dream. 

The seven-song collaboration stands as a source of pride and joy for the two artists. And for the listener, a source of solace that emanates in waves of emotion. The high-tide may be A Fleeting Dream, the most groovy of the beat-driven ambient compositions, with Adrift in Time and In Waking Life the most calming. The album ends with an expansive deja vu in the form of A Familiar Moment, gently waking us from a state of reverie, renewed and refreshed. Until we all meet again.

The leaves have started to change in some parts of the world, yet autumnal flowers still bloom. Four of these flowers, the Lotus, Iris, Matsu, and Hosta, are the subject of Dokkodo Sounds’ Bloom EP. Featuring lush piano samples, longing guitar, and barely-there beats, it’s a fall record that’s warm and reinvigorating, through and through. Yutaka Hirasaka’s latest full-length album “In The Moment” is another masterpiece from the prolific Tokyo based guitarist and producer.  Unabashedly true to himself, forever holding to his own style and vision, his latest effort is a keystone into the guitarists highly colourful lexicon.  If we look at Hirasaka’s proud list of influences such as John Frusciante, Fugazi, Tortoise, J Dilla and Keifer, the picture becomes clear how Hirasaka lands on his unique compositions that combine seemingly disparate genres into effective songs that are equally catchy as they are challenging. 

The release comes on a collectible tape cassette featuring the unmistakable artwork of Ivan Merlin (aka Stab Master Arson), painting Hirasaka’s Tokyo apartment studio into a beautiful abstraction. A must have for the fans of true and good music!

Elijah Nang is a London-based experimental electronic artist who also describes himself as an audio novelist. In his music, we find a frequent homage to East Asian elements and sounds. His sound crafts a new niche in the lofi hop-hop genre, a mixture of electronica with Japanese influences, something Nang calls japtronica.‘Sora’ means sky in Japanese. Listening to this atmospheric track will leave soaring through the sky.

This is one of my favorite albums I’ve ever made. I made most of it during Covid since I had a lot of free time. And I feel like it is some of my best work, a point in my creative career, where what I was creating finally sounded like what I wanted to create. It’s short and sweet because brevity is the soul of wit. The track art features me in a mask covered in caution tape- a warning sign to keep your distance because I could be carrying a virus or maybe as a final warning to those that never believed in me.
