Digital Drama: Teaching and Learning Art and Media in Tanzania

Animated with African sights, sounds, and sentiments, this book focuses on digital media and intercultural interaction at Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni Bagamoyo (TaSUBa), a national arts and culture institute in Tanzania. It paints a vivid portrayal of everyday life in East Africa’s only institute for practical art training, narrated through the life histories of students, teachers, and alumni. Following the anthropological tradition of thick description, it analyzes cultural digitization in relation to institutional transformation, framed in the historical context of a nation that has mixed tribalism, nationalism, Pan-Africanism, and cosmopolitanism in astonishingly creative ways. To make sense of this cultural hybridity, Digital Drama rethinks one of the classic concepts in anthropology – liminality – while exploring a new form of statehood – the state of creolization. The study is based on ethnographic engagements at TaSUBa from 2002 to 2009, combining participant observation with digital, visual, and sensory research methods.
