Epistemic Solipsism And Temporality

There is a story in Zen circles about a man and a horse. The horse is galloping quickly, and it appears that the man on the horse is going somewhere important. Another man, standing alongside the road, shouts, “Where are you going?” and the first man replies, “I don’t know! Ask the horse!”

This is an example of a "koan" in the tradition of Zen Buddhism. Zen Buddhism has traditionally favored "sudden enlightenment" to a gradual process of attaining enlightenment. Zen tradition teaches the practitioner that they are already enlightened, and one need merely reflect on the moment, or perhaps particular events in life, to realize that enlightenment. 

Our guest in this podcast is Emerson Browning, a theologian, and scholar as well as a musician and avid D&D player. Our discussion of Zen includes the historical background of Zen, its popularization in the west as well as its social and political influences. Finally, we touch on the notion of "Truth," and the non-linguistic nature of reality.
