A Boorloo born treasure returns to its home shores for the holidays. The undeniably adored Jo has been and still continues to be an integral part of the music community spanning between Perth & Melbourne. Although Jo had already left for Melbourne before I got to meet her, her name was echoed among peers whether it be the alias Toni Yotzi (RIP Tony Yozzi) or Jo. From Day Woo to Deep Doogs Jo’s commitment to bring alternative dance parties to the scene never went unnoticed or unappreciated. No matter how far and wide her talents may take her across this globe, she will always remain a true G.

Jo: "I love when the environment allows for a long game, when music feels like mist, an all encompassing presence but not intrusive. There's no anxiety waiting for the next track to be mixed quickly, with long form music being woven into a new journey. I love subtle intensity, metallic textures with breathing room, sweetness and lots of melancholia. 

I've finally come to place where I 'mostly' feel mixes exist because of a certain time and emotional place. It's not the last exploration, so they don't need to represent all parts of you in your entirety. They're a moment, not your life's work.

Here's this one, not perfect, but from where I was standing everything and everyone was. 

I can't properly describe what a deep joy it was to play for old + new friends. I am profoundly grateful that a year of missing, distance and disconnection allowed me to feel so embraced and cared for throughout the beautiful Boorloo summer. Thank you Monty ❤ thank you friends, thank you family.

Music is a tool for thinking with. It forms how I view the world, and it’s capable of enlarging my sense of reality and expanding my knowledge of other ways of thinking and being. I love that it continually offers new perspectives, new ways of seeing, other consciousnesses with which to view reality. 

The mixes I have always loved the most are those that have their own tone, their own language, they reveal a strange new psychic space for us to inhabit. 

Recording mixes has always been an important form of self-therapy for me to illuminate my own feelings and respond to shifts in the world around me.

I thank you in advance for accepting this invitation to take a glimpse inside my personal space. I would like to share some very special music that conjures many thoughts and feelings for me. Nostalgia for my childhood in Kalamunda, for the time I spent with my father in Hungary. For gazing endlessly at my brother and sister’s CD collections, for long bus rides and bush walks with my walkman. But most importantly, because these are the songs that taught me that music can be both emotionally resonant and powerfully abstract. It can be instantly familiar and totally unexplainable at the same time. This music was truly magical to me when I first heard it, and it is that feeling of wonder that I still search for everyday as a creator and listener of this wonderful art form and human experience.

"Personal space is something I feel very comfortable sharing with anyone that’s why it is a pleasure to welcome you the listener into a place that’s very open and free. I find music constantly forming a soundtrack to the moments in my life, this moment finds me in the beautiful surroundings of Monty’s garden accompanied by her friend Lilly and my wife sipping on fine wine and eating home made carrot cake. My record selections are often decided by the surroundings and the people around me, today is no different. I’m immediately made to feel at home and the atmosphere is warm. Feelings of uncertainty and nervousness occupy my mind prior to pressing play, the moment I put the first record down everything changes. Music is my solace, my therapy and for a long time now my best friend. Realising the role it plays in my life has been key to understanding my own emotions and mental health. There’s a deeper meaning to every note played and every word spoken so down the rabbit hole we go on an adventure we seek into the collection of my heart, I’ll let you take a peek.

"Like many, my first experiences with music were through my parents. There was never really a quiet moment in our house, something always playing in the background - it became that thing that was always there. As I’ve gotten older, many things have changed, but the role that it (music) plays in my day to day life still remains much the same - something that, both accompanies and enhances everything around me. What I have probably realised more is that when isolated and completely focused on, music becomes something completely different - there aren't many feelings that compare to the ones you get when hearing a song you like for the first time. This is a small selection of those songs - a diverse mix of favourites, old and new.

Phew! We made it! The first Personal Space mix post Iso here in Perth took place on a still winters afternoon in the gardens of east freo. After months of minimal gatherings and limited physical social interaction with our dearest friends it was finally deemed safe to give our friends a hug again. Thank you Pete!

"With this mix I invite you to join me for a cozy date in my personal space. In here you can find both warmth and coolness, slumber and arousal. Love, but also loneliness and vulnerability. 
First I’d suggest taking off your shoes and getting comfy. There is a couch here you’ll sink right into, as well as cushions and blankets on the floor if you prefer. In this space we can relax and unwind together, in silence, gazing out the window, listening and feeling as the seasons change from Summer to Autumn, through Winter and Spring.

Most commonly known to our community as 'Rok', 'Riley', 'Rok Riley', 'THE ROK'. Personal Space is thrilled to introduce, although i feel as though she is someone who needs little introducing, Rachel! I have had Rach on my mind to do a PS mix ever since I started.. over two years ago now. I have always been inspired by Riley's contribution to the music/arts community here in Perth/Boorloo and not only that, but also constantly being a ray of supportive sunshine wherever she may go, leaving you grinning from ear to ear and saying, as she walks away, "Wow, goddam, I LOVE HER!!".  
Inbetween Rach's jampacked calendar of DJ gigs, attending gigs, being an artist, teacher & friend, it proved difficult to lock her down for a mix. Alas we made it happen on a breezy Saturday afternoon under the palms of east street, a joy it was, I too hope you enjoy listening back on Rach's Personal Space.

“As I grow older I have become more and more dependent on music to express myself where words fail me. To explain what music means in a mix feels impossible too--for me it feels indistinguishable where I start and where it finishes, and is in a constant state of flux. I decided to instead focus on creating a love letter to the departure of spring and the welcoming of summer, Djilba moving through Kambarang, Birak and Bunuru, which felt like a way of somehow harnessing the overwhelming emotion surrounding the task. Attempts at embrace, washing in and out, asking for gentle glimpses, it helped reach me out of an internal world I so easily get lost in and in doing so -peering into cupped hands small secrets are revealed -like whispers on the cold breeze on a warm afternoon.”
