Amédée De Murcia aka Somaticae is a regular of our label, first recording industrial music and techno under this moniker (his first properly distributed album, Catharsis, back in 2013), then powerful digital noise (Electricité, part of the IPX CD series) and a bunch of outstanding tapes on some of the best French DIY labels toying with the format (Fougère, Tanzprocess). Like France Sauvage who recently released on the label, Amédée De Murcia is someone who has and still is touring extensively and playing every cave, bar, garage, house in the French underground and Eastern Europe, alone or with one of his many bands (OD Bongo, Vinci, etc.).

This record manages to encapsulate the spirit of his semi-improvised live sets of this past two years. Reminiscent of Pan Sonic at their most techno, and of the ghost in the machine of Toshimaru Nakamura’s No Input Mixing Board, it’s one of the tensest as well as explosive records we’ve heard lately, just one big burst of raw pulsating energy. It’s all kicks, bass and noises, always on the edge, grapping your ears for a bit more than half an hour and leaving you exhausted and blooming.

The making of the record has been inspired by and is dedicated to Amesys, the French company responsible for surveillance software technologies used by several dictatorships around the world, which story is summed up by Somaticae on the back cover. The artwork designed by Liquid Test Press, attempts at representing the operation of censorship and repression resulting from this too discreet surveillance software. If this records makes any profit past initial costs, they will go to fund the activities of collectives against technological warfare and surveillance (struggles against the deployment of facial recognition; civil liberties advocacy).

Il a enregistré sous ce pseudonyme son premier album correctement distribué, Catharsis, en 2013, entre musique industrielle et techno, puis un puissant disque de noise digital (Electricité, qui fait partie de la série de CD IPX) ainsi qu’un tas de cassettes exceptionnelles sur certains des meilleurs labels de bricolage français (Fougère, Tanzprocess). Comme France Sauvage que nous venons d’accueillir sur le label, Amédée De Murcia joue et continue de jouer dans à peu près tous les bars, garages, caves et grottes de France et d'Europe de l'Est, sous ce pseudo avec ses différents groupes (OD Bongo, Vinci, etc.)

Amesys parvient à résumer l'esprit du live semi-improvisé que Somaticae a pratiqué ces deux dernières années. Réminiscent de Pan Sonic dans ce qu’ils ont de plus techno, et du fantôme dans la machine façon No Input Mixing Board de Toshimaru Nakamura, c'est l'un des enregistrements les plus tendus et explosifs que nous ayons entendus récemment. Juste une grosse décharge continue d'énergie brute et de pulsations, tout en kicks, basses et larsens, toujours sur la brèche, saisissant vos oreilles pendant un peu plus d'une demi-heure pour finir par vous laisser épuisé et épanoui.

La réalisation du disque a été inspirée par et est dédiée à Amesys, la société française responsable des technologies logicielles de surveillance utilisées par plusieurs dictatures à travers le monde, dont vous pourrez l’histoire synthétisée par Somaticae au dos du disque. L’artwork de Liquid Test Press tente de donner une representation visuelle à la répression dûe au travail forcément discret de ce type de logiciel. Si ce disque fait des bénéfices au-delà des coûts initiaux, ils iront financer les activités des collectifs contre la guerre technologique et la surveillance (lutte contre le déploiement de la reconnaissance faciale; défense des libertés civiles).

Jazzoux are comprised of two veterans of the preposterously labyrinthine French free-beat noise scene- Amédee De Murcia usually cranks out slippery and joyful electronics as In Paradisum's favorite tour-dog 'Somaticae' while Claire Gapenne (hailing from the "la ficelle Picarde" crepe loving city Amiens) has spent time in legendary free-noise unit 'Headwar' and with numerous solo releases as 'Terrine' on French out-beat electronic labels such as Tanzprocesz and Bruit Direct. Suffice to say, these two teaming up gift us a wonderfully wrapped cadeaux of a strikingly free and unprejudiced electronic-beat sound; rhythm jazz played by machines all with a delicious creme dollop of a jeer and buttery wink-wink.

After a couple of EPs, qoso reveals his first LP on In Paradisum, a label he joined in 2013 for the Like It Soft EP he cosigned with Low Jack. Charlie Janiaut opens up a third way between physical energy and experiments on sound textures. The producer originally from Franche Comté has dusted his fingers on battle scratch and his playing with computer is totally instinct driven. Playing techno from the viewpoint of rap music, qoso’s music is entirely based on samples and feeds on mistakes, frequency translation and a piling up of effects leaving space to randomness. The tracks on Printemps Ete were composed all at once and speak more to the body than the head - they’re rhythm tracks as stated by Emotional, which opens the record where most electronic albums like to put a nice ambient track. After being compared to Blawan or Levon Vincent by Resident Advisor, qoso is now leaving most references points behind with a syncopated sound that puts some fun into the raw.

Descending from the Toulousian post-hardcore scene, Romain Barbot and Gregory Buffier have produced more than a dozen tormented ambient-drone records under the name Saåad, such as the remarkable Deep Float (Hands In The Dark, 2014). Upon invitation of the local Les Orgues festival, giving them access to the Puget organ located in the Church of Notre-Dame de la Dalbade, they composed an original creation that In Paradisum is proud to publish under the form of the album Verdaillon. 

Through dynamics of elevation, suspension and tension, Saåad’s music reaches altered states. Consisting of thick patches of sound, it gathers powerful harmonies and buries them under samples of the world’s rustling sounds. The sources are rarely identifiable, which makes for the singularity to each record. 

Verdaillon goes against the lyrical outbursts that are familiar to a certain register of ambient music, and towards an extremely rare quality of dynamic and detail. The record’s singular and discreet beauty is due to the organ in all of its most secular aspects, and to a certain « something in the air » of that particular place, on those particular days. The finale of Vorde provides the key to the record: it takes the listeners back to the instrument’s origins, at a time when the spiritual was part of ordinary life.

In the last two years, Paul Régimbeau had put his most personal and earliest musical project "Mondkopf" in stand-by mode. The rich arrangement work that defined his sound wasn’t fitting his desire of simplistic intensity anymore. His different collaborations (Autrenoir, Violent Magic Orchestra with Vampilla & Pete Swanson, Foudre!, Oiseaux-Tempêtes) forced him to explore new aspects of playing electronic music like a regular band member. The young producer was experimenting being a musician and embracing the experience.

But after a year without composing, he felt the need to do music by himself again. In November 2015, the Parisian set up machines he had acquired in the last few months and started improvising what became the first song on his new album: "They Fall, But You Don’t." Since that moment, Paul regularly spent nights experimenting and recording what he felt at the time. While previous records reflected months of fine-tuning, these songs represent the mood of one evening; one night; the ones when you surrender yourself to the melancholy of the moment. Much like a diary, the album is a compilation of these moments that escape reality in a chaotic and dark year.

This wasn't supposed to be a new Mondkopf record like the ones before. The album took shape night after night, almost by itself. Paul wasn’t sure he wanted to make them into a record but then he felt it would be a good thing to have them released and be able to mark the end of this period. He always said that if had he learned to play the guitar, he maybe would never have done electronic music. This album reflects that idea of music not being a technical or a stylistic challenge, but a way of dealing with life and working out one’s own emotions. This record has something familiar with Mondkopf’s previous output with the raw textures and half-light atmospheres, but the rest is a radical change for him. The synth pads of "They Fall... "are neither retro nor futuristic. In addition to Paul's fragile vocals, they exhale a distinct feeling of just being there.

The tracks follow their own path by being focused and vital. "They Fall But You Don’t" is the singular manifesto of a relationship to electronic music that leaves out the ideas of innovation and genre and more resembles the language of a new folk music; deeply evocative, powerful and free.

Mondkopf - Vivere, Parte II

"This recording registers a singular and magical moment. 

The piece was recorded live at the Faï farm in the Hautes-Alpes on June 3th 2016 during the Echos festival. It was the last musical moment of a long series of concerts which started more or less 24 hours earlier. It was around 7.30 pm. The sun passed by the cliff above the farm, drawing a barrier of shadows. This special atmosphere strongly affected the music. 

The Faï farm is set under a cliff which work as a gigantic amplification device. The farm is equipped with specific speakers, the "trompes," built and positioned so as to resonate with a natural echo; one works with the bass, one with the medium, and one with the treble. 

The Dôme association invited me to this edition of the Echos festival with a singular request : to compose Mantras which would be played in between each performance. 

The piece we hear in this recording was conceived as a contrechamp (reverse shot) to the Mantras and for the culmination of the festival. It is made of an improvisation around "Una Filheta de Lion," a traditional song from the south of Massif Central. The song is stretched out to the extreme, almost distended. I played it like a indian raga, from my own perspective. The violin showcases the "color" and I followed with a long melodic expansion with growing density and intensity. I string the verse over around thirty minutes, with a variation of melody and rhythm responding to the echos coming to me from the cliff. The composition melts sound materials with the mantras thus pushing the same continuum to the end of the festival. This concert was a kind of greeting : to the mountain and to the sun, a greeting to the festival, and to those who attended and made it happen."

Cet enregistrement documente un moment singulier et un peu magique. Le concert a lieu à la ferme du Faï dans les Hautes-Alpes, le 3 juin 2016, pendant le festival Échos. C’est le dernier moment musical d’une longue série de concerts qui à démarré pas loin de 24h plus tôt. Il est autour de 19h30. Le soleil en passant derrière la falaise qui surplombe la ferme, dessine une barrière d’ombre. L’atmosphère particulière de ce moment s’imprimera fortement sur la musique.

La Ferme du Faï est installé en contrebas d’une falaise qui agis comme une gigantesque caisse de résonance. Le Ferme est équipée de hauts parleurs spécifiques, les « Trompes », construites et positionnées pour faire raisonner l’écho naturel ; une pour les basses, une pour les mediums, une pour les aigus. 

L’Association Dôme m’a invité à cette édition du Festival Échos avec une commande singulière : composer des Mantras qui seraient diffusés entre chaque performance.

La pièce que l’on entend ici, été conçue comme un contre-champ aux Mantras et un point d’orgue au festival. Elle consiste en une improvisation autour d’Una Filheta de Lion, chanson traditionnelle du sud du Massif Central. La chanson est étirée à l’extrême et presque dilatée. Je la joue à la façon d’un râga indien, à mon biais : le violon expose la « couleur » et s’en suis un long déploiement mélodique, à la densité et à l’intensité croissante. J’y égraine les couplets sur une trentaine de minutes, variant la mélodie et le rythme en réponse aux échos qui me reviennent de la falaise. La composition partage des matériaux sonores avec les Mantras, faisant ainsi se poursuivre jusqu’au bout du festival un même continuum. Ce concert fut pour moi une manière de salut, salut à la montagne et au soleil, salut au Festival, à ceux qu’il l’on fait exister et à ceux qu’il l’ont traversé."

"Luke Calzonetti is a rare contemporary musician which showcases, song after song, an endless imagination. Rather than using everything that shines, Run Dust gently shakes the bottom of the tank of several genres to gather various precious materials and melodies.

He knows how to arrange them in proper, sinuous plots, far away from the actual reign of closed loops fascinated by their own charm. Listening to ‘Banca Nazionale’ feels witness to the awakening of an archaic and intimate imagination, like a conspiracy revealed and tenderly illuminated by spotlights and neons. The synthesizers, of which we never know if they are hardware, samples, or just hallucinations, appear first spry and the next minute threatening, now familiar and then strange. They behave like a syndicate of micro-organisms woken up from their torpor, which leads us to decide where the next events should go, events of which only they know the secrets.

As discreet witnesses of their palavers, we open our ears so we don’t miss a beat. We’re not lonely anymore. There is a hidden dimension in the folds of our common reality. It's ready to contaminate everything; to distort the walls like the flexible houses of Ballard's ‘Vermillon Sands’; to redraw the characters and monuments placed on the face of our bank bills ; to paint the horizons with colors which we had long forgotten about."

It's been a while but we have a few great records coming up. And we're happy to announce that our next records will be available outside of France through the infamous Boomkat distro.

First off, France Sauvage. France Sauvage ("Wild France" in French) is Arno Bruil, Johann Mazé and Manuel Duval playing electronics, synths and drums. They’ve been breaking ground for more than ten years and there aren't many stones in the European DIY venue circuit that they’ve left unturned in their wake as a band or under other their solo monikers (Descendeur, Le Cercle des Mallissimalistes, Rien Virgule, Ensemble UN, Lord Rectangle etc).

Their unique sound deceives attempts to compare. It couldn’t have formed without a strong tie to industrial music, outsider art, sound collage or dark wave, but it’s all fully digested and their sound goes well beyond these references. With no repertoire and no rehearsals, their music is a live improvised beast. It’s dense, tense, noisy, catchy and playful all at once.

The best way to describe them is to say that’s they’re one of the rare cases of an actual electronic live music band. Their use of a wide range custom-built electronic instruments shows no self- indulgence in virtuosity – every part of their performance output, from the sound to the overall progression is extremely tight.

Welcoming them to In Paradisum feels special, as their concert was the first time we stepped into the legendary experimental music venue Les Instants Chavirés in Paris. France Sauvage's imagination probably and subconsciously helped define the lines of direction around the music which we’ve been publishing on our label since then.

With no surprise given their live focus, a good half of the band’s output so far have been live outtakes, sometimes including audience noise. This one, though, feels recorded straight from a garage studio. Surprisingly, it sounds more like a "proper album" – a notion they would probably laugh at. Thanks to its clearly defined and varied songs, there is a strong sense of narrative that permeates throughout the entire album.

The album has the edge of Pan Sonic if they had gone to the countryside for a feast or sonically channels the twisted mindset of the famous 20 Jazz Funk Greats album cover by TG. France Sauvage have sometimes described their music as "free rural" and maybe this record is the best example of it– communal music for the young century, a village orchestra for the forthcoming collision of locals and city-exploding bourgeois. Healing Frequencies, completed in March 2020, brings together in a single mix and a pseudo-therapeutic program a series of tracks composed by Qoso over the last two years, ranging from pyschædelic drone-dub miniatures escaped from the recent Morning Routine (The Trilogy Tapes, 2019) to uplifiting house micro-bangers in the vein of the Monica EP (In Paradisum, 2013), through downtempo "vibes" with sweet voices that seem to have escaped from the Mo'Wax / SourceLabs era.

When Qoso's music addresses the capacity of music to "take care of yourself", it is not to parody or denounce this pretense. Rather, he grasps it with a generosity and wonder that draws directly from the ambivalence of this therapeutic function - which resonates in the pre-chewed script of a woman whispering "I want you to take care of me" on a worn-out breakbeat, or a male voice who describes the powers of incense, with an almost disturbing hint of indifference, and against a backdrop of oceanic flanger sounds.

Healing Frequencies thus takes Qoso's music to new spaces, to the strange familiarity of a pseudo-civilization where multicolored leisure reigns. It is evocative of the landscapes of Andorra filmed by Virgil Vernier, where fountains look like holograms, of the corridors of sports halls where the house hits of the last decade resonate distorted, for flashy counters which sell supernatural perfumes.

You can llsten to Healing Frequencies to "boost your karma" or for the pleasure of seeing the spectacle of intimacy and psychobiological management recompose itself in the distorting mirror of an attractive and perverse soundtrack.

Healing Frequencies, complété en mars 2020, rassemble dans un même mix en forme de pseudo-programme thérapeutique une série de morceaux composés par Qoso sur les deux dernières années, qui vont de miniatures drone-dub pyschédéliques échappées de la confection du récent Morning Routine (The Trilogy Tapes, 2019) à des micro-bangers de house uplifiting dans la veine du maxi Monica (In Paradisum, 2013), en passant par des morceaux downtempo agrémentées de voix suaves qu’on croirait échappées de l’époque Mo’Wax / SourceLabs.

Si la musique de Qoso aborde la capacité de la musique à « se faire du bien », ce n’est pas pour la parodier ou la dénoncer. Elle s’en empare plutôt avec une générosité et un étonnement qu’elle tire directement de l’ambivalence de cette fonction thérapeutique – sensible dans le script pré-mâché d’une femme qui susurre « j’ai envie que tu t’occupes de moi » sur un breakbeat usé jusqu'à la corde, comme à une autre qui décrit, avec une nuance d’indifférence presque inquiétante sur fond de flangers océaniques, les pouvoirs de l’encens. 

Healing Frequencies tire ainsi la musique de Qoso vers de nouveaux espaces, vers l'étrange familiarité d’une pseudo-civilisation du loisir multicolore, proche des paysages de l’Andorre filmée par Virgil Vernier où les fontaines ressemblent à des hologrammes, des couloirs de salles de sport où les tubes house de la dernière décennie résonnent déformés, ou de comptoirs clinquants où seraient vendus des parfums supernaturels.

Ecoutez Healing Frequencies pour « booster votre karma », ou pour le plaisir qu’il y a à voir le monde de l’intimité-spectacle et du management psychobiologique se recomposer dans le miroir déformant d’une bande-son séduisante et perverse.
