"While fresh talent is always springing from the ground of Turkey, we should also not forget the tall oaks that have stood the test of time. This year Özdemir Erdoğan was the recipient of the Istanbul Jazz Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his well-loved compositions that blend jazz with Turkish classical and folk music. Spellbinding melodies such as “Bana Ellerini Ver,” “Gurbet,” or his version of the Aşık Veysel song “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım” fuse Turkish and Western influences into a deep and profoundly satisfying whole.

"This mixture has definite roots in Erdoğan’s childhood. “My mother was a classical Western pianist. On my father’s side they liked listening to Turkish classical music. It was a three-floor house built in a garden of around one acre, with a two-floor building at the front for the personnel,” he told The Guide Istanbul. “In that building were my grandfather’s guests Ali and his wife Suzan. I used to listen to Alevi music from them, Mozart and Chopin from my mother, and Münir Nurettin Selçuk on the top floor.”

Erdoğan recalls memorizing the songs from the movie Rock Around The Clock at age 16, and he became popular for his performances at high school. During his military service Erdoğan met bassist Eray Turgay, who introduced him to musicians such as Arif Mardin, Cüneyt Sermet, and Emin Fındıkoğlu. “Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Jim Hall are my harmony teachers in a sense,” says Erdoğan “Miles Davis’ experiments with modal music opened the way for me, and I include Chick Corea there too. I try to adapt what I’ve learned to our national music without unsettling those of our generation.”

When asked which three albums he would take to a desert island, Erdoğan confidently chooses three by Miles Davis: Miles Smiles, Miles in Europe, and My Funny Valentine."
