Personally, I hate the dumb friend trope. The friend that's always around the hero simply for comic relief and to make hero look better because on his own he is a forgettable generic soup boy. I find it annoying that despite being best friends you know nothing about the friend who is always on screen with the hero. I'm not asking for a deep, well thought out character arc for them but a basic back ground story about how they met helps establish their relationship and I think that goes long way. I also find it weird that even though they spend all their time together, the friend is no where to be seen when a pivotal moment in hero's life is going on or when hero is going through a tough time. I don't think there's anything wrong with a comic relief character but why make it the hero's best friend? Don't get me wrong, it can be done well like any other tropes but I feel like it's not always used well. I think there's charm to the dumb friend trope because it's very much based in reality. We've all had a friend or two who is a goofball that's always around us to take part in whatever stupid thing we could conjure up but what makes those friendships great imo is not the stupid things themselves but the laughs that you get out of it and the deeper connection you form after getting caught doing something you are not supposed to be doing. I think that's what missing with this trope, they are simply played for cheap laughs and forget how those moments where the characters are just goofing around can also develop a very sweet bond that if cherished, could be a fulfilling relationship in its own way. I think movies that do it well are Arjun Reddy (like the movie or not but the hero's friend is the star of the show) and nava manmadhudu (Thanga Magan in Tamil).
