Mike Van Aacken, the US Water Services Commercial Manager for Boart Longyear Drilling Services discusses the uses and benefits of Dual Tube Flooded Reverse (DTFR). DTFR is a large rotary drilling method where air and a fluid medium (drilling mud) help clean large diameter holes to allow drilling in loss circulation zone's or help clean the holes where conventional drilling methods don't work. Using dual tube rods, the technique pumps air through the outer tube and forces mud and drill cuttings upward through the center tube, preventing them from plugging porous rock formations with cuttings, a common problem under the high pressure of conventional drilling.
