First post-hell night playing a club, and I got a bit excited. Some unreleased original material and a few cheesy tunes.

The track is the first work of our collaboration and the initial ignition of 'DÉERR'.

Punkal talks about executive power and governmental power, about their freedom to do whatever they want with their people: to distribute our goods, our property, our land and our soil to the strongest. In the past, the military and soldiers were used to impose themselves on society, but now the weapons of power are more subtle and are protected by laws and enforced by accomplices and enforcers within the system.

Punkal speaks of the strongest hitting first. The song aims to remind the strong and the powerful, when they make the rules that divide countries and people, that life is more than the time we live on earth. Responsibility, guilt and injustice continue, even once their time in this place is over.

"My initial idea was to play an improvised sequence with my electronic drum kit, triggering my drum machine which had synthesised drums layered with different sample cuts of Paola's vox, and then quantise the output for maximum dancefloor enjoyment. My original stylistic intent was something in between fast electro and drum & bass, so I was a bit surprised to end up with this grimey uk techno. I programmed the drum machine so that each drum channel had an LFO randomising which vocal sample was layered on top of it. I had maybe 15 different samples, but I made copies of them before uploading to my drum machine so that all 127 sample slots were filled. I used cat-related file names randomised by an AI-generated bash script in order to further randomise the selection.

That is the extent to which I am willing to use AI in my music making. I used different LFO shapes and ranges - some were more random and flipped through many different samples, or some used a square wave which only randomised between two samples. When I had the program sounding nice, I played it a bit on my drum kit and hated it, so I retired to the sofa with my drum machine and played it at a much slower tempo. First take was glorious. All of the seemingly well-placed vocal samples were completely random. This was especially amazing towards the end of the track. During the mixing process, I only added some additional snare hits, the reesey laser bassline, and the break with Paola's stretched voice. Drums and vox were printed in the same tracks, so the mix could have been much better, but I loved the first take too much to fuck with it. This was such a fun approach with wondrous results. The vocal samples were really great to work with and definitely suited the unintentional style that it came to be."  =D

Insolvn C, a new project from Ian Vogel, lashes out in frustration at a state in decline. In absence of coherence and with an empty chest, we resign to angular and dense palettes, suspended somewhere between saturation and resolution. In a stateful descent into acceptance, we vacillate between ecstasy and dread. Insolvn C suggests a sonic location somewhere in that exchange. Broken paces, overdriven connections, drifting out of awareness, and back into tinnitus.

In January 2020, Ian released his latest work as Etkats - Drawing Sleep Curves Into Blotches - a moody but optimistic LP that explores various palettes of techno, performed and recorded with a traditional hardware sequencing approach.

best of 2020

Insolvn Sea is a musician and disc jockey based in Barcelona. He records effected instruments and then mixes them in curious ways. The instruments are mostly electronic, and the sounds are generally synthesised. The recordings are usually quite drum-focused, mainly for dancing and other frivolities, but often additionally for traversing through imagined space-time-related experiences whilst wearing headphones. He also enjoys smashing a drum kit accompanied with highly-amplified guitars. His first LP was released in 2020 under his Etkats moniker.
