The Celebrate Music Synthesizer Group is a spice- hunting collective formed in Rotterdam in the Summer of 2012, when multi-media cultural centre The Worm graciously opened their world class synthesizer studio to the current incarnation of Sun Araw Band. Cameron Stallones (Sun Araw, Magic Lantern), M. Geddes Gengras, Tony Lowe (CEO Raw Tings), and Butchy Fuego (San Gabriel, Boredoms) spent a week amidst Syrinx, Serge, and Surinamese victuals, tracking the self-titled double album live to 2-track.

Polymath James Leyland Kirby must surely have one of the most confounding CV’s in the business: he spent years taking the piss out of the music industry with anthems rallying against the (VV)MCPS, he notoriously fell out with various well known record labels for reasons you’ll just have to google, goaded Aphex Twin with a series of ‘tributes’ and channelled his love of everything from Falco (Rock Me Amadeus), Chris De Burgh, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Stockport karaoke nights into a stream of increasingly bizzare 7”s back in the early noughties.
But at the same time he was responsible for releasing some of the very earliest material from Boards of Canada (Hell Interface: 1997), made a ruck of frankly groundbreaking industrial electronic records, brought New Beat to the world’s attention and, in 1999, made his first album as The Caretaker, a project that would go on to release some of the most loved Ambient/ Lynchian albums of recent times. SInce then he’s also produced an incredible suite of releases under his own name, scored various film projects and released three EP’s under the ‘Intrigue & Stuff’ banner which are, for our money, so ahead of their time they might just start sinking in properly by the end of the decade.
All of which brings us to ‘Watching Dead Empires in Decay’, a new album recorded under another of Kirby’s pseudonyms ‘The Stranger’ and released on Modern Love, a label that has been close to Kirby through these last eventful 15 years. It’s a dream album for the label: perhaps the most ambitious of Kirby’s career so far. It’s complex, singular, enigmatic, percussive, dark, and you just can’t work out how it was constructed. Gone are the sampled 78’s of The Caretaker, but it also doesnt exactly sound electronic - you just can’t quite fathom how any of it was put together: Field Recordings? Found Sounds? Sheets of metal scraped and hammered? Drum machines re-wired? It’s stark and unsettling, haunted, even troubling - but often just beautiful.
It starts with the sharp clang of opener ‘We Are Enemies But Not Here’ before the woozy percussive crawl ‘So Pale It Shone In The Night’ sucks you into a bare landscape: somewhere between Eraserhead and Fumio Hayasaka’s music for Akira Kurosawa. And then there are moments that break through the tension with clarity and familiarity, nostalgia even: ‘Where Are Our Monsters Now, Where Are Our Friends?’ could have been made by Boards of Canada if they had taken a turn into more noxious terrain back in 1998, while ‘Spiral Of Decline’ offsets the drum programming you’d most likely associate with a Powell record with an oblique sense of timing and space. It all ends with ‘About To Enter A Strange New Period’, an unusual, vaporous coda that offers no resolution - it just shuts proceedings down with nothing settled.

Struggle Into The Unknown is created by a single sound source of locks and keys. An extensive amount of recording was done in order to capture the different sounds available within this field. I also built a Max/MSP tool to be used within the composition, as a different way to process the sound. 

The structure of the piece is important as it does follow a loose narrative, which is a reaction to the sound source used. The source of locks and keys has a number of connotations as to what locks and keys mean to people, but a common factor is the fact in which they will unlock something. Relating, the piece is a struggle and a frustrating, frantic and obsessive urge to get into what is locked. The piece starts by looking for a key, using only the sounds of keys in this section and then moves onto a section of only lock sounds. This represents the way in which you would unlock something. The sounds also reflects the human movement of trying different keys and different methods, expressed by the frantic short phrases that build and amount. Original sounds are very much present in the first half of the piece as we move through the key and lock sections, but also processed sounds are added to this to heighten the frantic movement. Within the lock section there is a shift in position as the timbre and movement of the sound acts as if as a listener we have gone inside the lock, hearing the mechanism from inside. Space plays a big part in the piece, and in this section absorbs the listeners in from what was a relatable personal space to a more in depth experience. Directional tendencies of the frantic struggle and constant movement throughout both sections has built into a tension and release development, shown by the turn of a lock, and the dynamically loud clunk.

How does one truly explain the work of The Humble Bee? 

I have thought about that question many a late night and to this day I still find it difficult to put together a definitive answer...

It's more than just music when Craig enters the studio; It's mysterious, fragile and most importantly it comes from the mans soul! 

This fifty minute piece made exclusively for Fluid Radio's Underexposed sessions perfectly encapsulates what words could never express.

Some background information from Craig...

"It started with me booking a week’s holiday in Cornwall, in November staying in a lovely converted railway carriage (something I have wanted to do for ages now).

The plan for the week was to spend time making and collecting things, responding to what the area had to offer.

This, for me turned out to be light and sound...

I suppose it was the fact that although these two things were the essence of the place, they were at the same time constantly in a state of flux, changing from one moment to the next.

I found this duality intriguing, I think it was the fact that it was at once permanent and yet ephemeral that stimulated and directed the work.

The week became a documentation of these things, of tides, of weather, of light, of the sounds.

I made maps, plotted coast lines, developed scores from fleeting things; the rain on the window, the barbed wire against the sky, the tidal marks in the sand, things that would come and go and change with the place.

I came back home with several videos, field recordings, photographs, found scores, collected colour palettes, lumen prints and rust prints from metal plates I’d left at the will of the currents and weather.

This lot was all used as my starting point for the audio.

The field recordings and the audio captured from the videos were the first things I worked with, arranging them chronologically and leaving space for the found scores to slot in between.

Once these were in place the rest of the space in the piece was left for me to fill with my response to what I had experienced, the existing audio and what I had collected and brought home."
