Institution Guest Mix Series

Huge thanks to Sri Lankan DJ/Producer SAJAY for accepting our invitation for a guest mix!

Having spent almost a decade touring and holding residencies on the Colombo DJ circuit, SAJAY has emerged as one of the top electronic music artists from Sri Lanka. In 2016, he co-founded "The Blueprint", an electronic music collective which has been hailed as one of the pioneering imprints in the Sri Lankan electronic music industry.

SAJAY began producing in 2018, and has been very successful, with several originals and remixes released on labels such as BC2, Soundteller Records, onedotsixtwo, Driod9, Mango Alley, and, most recently, JUICEBOX MUSIC (last track of this mix!).

Drawing inspiration from his Sri Lankan roots, and from his childhood spent in Kenya, SAJAY has a vibrant sonic palette that blurs the boundaries of contemporary music genres. This unique, high energy mix is no exception.

Institution 046: SAJAY

DJ/Producer Dimuth K was quick to establish himself as a favourite in Sri Lanka's Electronic Music circuit, and has been at the forefront of inspiring a new generation of electronic music producers on the island.

Having played alongside the likes of Nick Warren, Jeremy Olander, Guy J, Guy Mantzur, Brian Cid, and Cid Inc, and with numerous releases on labels such as Sudbeat, Hope Recordings, Parquet, and Plattenbank, Dimuth K is known for his unique blend of emotionally uplifting House/Techno/Progressive grooves.

Lucky for us here in Canada, Dimuth K has relocated to Toronto. (He has even been seen larking about, live-streaming with our good friend, Tim Penner!).

We are honoured that Dimuth K accepted our invite to make us this guest mix, Institution 047: Dimuth K. We think you’ll agree with us that it turned out beautifully.

Institution 047: Dimuth K

Italian producer Carlo Whale has been making waves since 2013, developing and honing his craft in his hometown of Cagliari. He has worked to present an emotive, organic, unique sound by pursuing boundaries between music, technology and nature. He has deepened his connection with synthetic sounds with a degree in Electronic Music at Cagliari Conservatory.

Carlo has several quality releases landing on labels such as Oddity, Einmusika, Steyoyoke, and Manual, amongst others, establishing himself as one of the most exciting breaking-through artists of 2021.

We at InstitutionYWG are truly honoured that Carlo accepted our invitation for this guest mix. Filled with his own, and others, unreleased originals, we think you'll agree that this session is pure fire.

Institution Selections 005: Justin Kace

D.H.U.B. discovered electronic music after moving to Montreal. His friend introduced him to the scene by way of going to a Sasha gig - that night, he fell in love with progressive house. 

DHUB began DJing in 2015. His hypnotic mixes blend progressive, deep, and organic house, with a sprinkling of middle eastern percussion and vocals.

Institution 060: D.H.U.B.

We are pleased to present our next guest, Mike Isai, for our 63rd episode!

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NYC, Isai has made a name for himself in the progressive house and techno world. His very first EP, Pillars to Butterflys, was released on Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings in 2020, to great acclaim. He has certainly been productive since that time, with an EP released on GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile Recordings, and a release on OneDotSixTwo.

Institution 063: Mike Isai

Our newest guest is Toronto-based Borella, and we couldn't be more delighted.  

A rising star in the Canadian and international electronic music scene, Borella has garnered support from none other than Nick Warren, via his SoundGarden label. She is busy on the DJ circuit, with regular appearances at CODA/Toronto, supporting the likes of Jeremy Olander and Einmusik, and even travelling to Tulum this spring to perform alongside Armen Miran.

Human, dreamer and melody lover.

Grammik’s (aka Aris Grammenos) involvement with electronic music started almost two decades ago. At 18 years old, Aris began spinning vinyl at local bars and clubs around his native Athens. His first release came out under his real name on No Border Recordings (2008) with numerous followup tracks on Sound Of Everything and Proton Limited.

In 2016 his first EP was released, under his current artist name “Grammik”, on Eyes Of The Owl Recordings with the title “New Tomorrow” , followed up by a remix on the same label. 

Grammik’s breakthrough came in 2020 when he joined the well-respected Steyoyoke Records family. “White Heart”, “Kalopsia”, “Vast Space”, and “Abroad” - his recent collaborative release together with Montreal’s Monarke – have all added to the techno-oriented, yet dreamy and melodic Steyoyoke sound.

He is well known for his built up dj sets that can begin from electronica and finish up to techno.

Question: What inspires you?
Grammik: I’m inspired by “everything that can make my mind dream and my heart sing"

Institution 066: Grammik

Istanbul-based VLKN (aka Volkan) first got into electronic music as a teenager. In 2003, he first got behind the decks, and still prefers spinning vinyl to this day. His passion for music lead him inevitably to the production side, with his 2021 EP “Senses” released on Schallmauer Records.  In addition to numerous guest mix invitations, VLKN curates an excellent regular SoundCloud podcast, “Analog Sessions”. 

VLKN’s sound incorporates warm melodies, groovy basslines, with a touch of class. Be on the lookout for his future releases!

Institution 068: VLKN

Sri Lankan DJ/Producer Noiyse Project debuted in 2018, and has since performed at numerous events and festivals across Sri Lanka and beyond. He is known for his high-energy DJ sets and greater than 90 original productions and remixes, on labels such as The Soundgarden, Sudbeat, Mango Alley, Modern Agenda, and his own label, Till the Sunrise.  Noiyse Project's music has been supported by prominent DJs and radio shows around the world, and he continues to be a rising star in the international underground electronic music scene.

Huge thanks to Buenos Aires native Ricky Ryan for creating our next guest mix!

Ricky Ryan's music blends warm house, deep techno, and dance floor anthems: all unified by his unparalleled mixing skills. He has a global footprint, with notable performances at international events such as the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), and Buenos Aires' Creamfields. He's also enjoyed an enviable residency at Brazil's prestigious Warung Beach Club.

His talent has not gone unnoticed. He was featured on John Digweed's renowned Transitions radio show and broke listener records on Proton Radio. Celebrated DJs like Sander Kleinenberg and Danny Howells have publicly endorsed his skills in interviews with DJ MAG.

Institution 079: Cesar Herresuelo

Born in Berlin, Isi (aka Katzengold) has had a deep connection with Berlin's vibrant club scene from an early age. Driven by her passion for creativity and collaborative ideation, she became a part of the dynamic collective Kom.Bass, in 2017. Shortly thereafter, she found herself behind the collective's DJ decks.

Infused with her profound love for electronic music, Isi's unique sound continues to evolve and flourish. Her sets are a testament to her dedication to storytelling, conveying a rich tapestry of emotions and feelings. It's no wonder she affectionately describes her style as "dreamer techno."

Thor-Laur is a self-described "late start" DJ born in Edmonton, and now calls Winnipeg, Canada home. Laurie has found Passion and Love in the power of deep house and melodic techno to enjoy with like-minded people. Laurie's roots and love for music started since his life's beginning, always having the tunes playing in the background since he can remember. He has found his place, and he has been welcomed with open arms.

Institution Selections 008: Thor-Laur

Christina Gavrilova, aka Forty Cats, has made a significant impact on the global progressive house scene. She has been making music for 13 years, and DJing for 15. Christina’s first milestone came with the "Highway" debut EP on Lane 8's This Never Happened label in 2019. Two years later, Forty Cats made a dramatic shift in her sound direction. She has since released on progressive house labels like Sudbeat, Mango Alley, Soundgarden, and PlattenBank ,while gaining support from industry legends such as Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J, D-Nox, Lane 8, Dowden, and Above & Beyond. For April 2024, Forty Cats will start her own label – PURRFECTION – and has already collaborated with artists such as KYOTTO, Ricky Ryan, EANP and others. 

Forty Cats tours globally, and has performed in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Armenia, and Argentina. Christina continues to captivate her audience with new releases, compilations, and DJ sets, maintaining a strong presence in the progressive house and techno scene.

Institution 084: Forty Cats

With a production career spanning almost a decade, Brazilian-born, Barcelona-based Pedro Capelossi has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of atmosphere and rhythm, drawing the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula.

In 2023 he founded his own musical imprint REFRACTION RECORDS.  Representing some of the world’s most avant-garde visual artists, designers and musicians, REFRACTION blurs the boundaries between house, techno and its closely related derivatives.

Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas has been a primary vehicle for Pedro's far-reaching work, with additional projects on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Madloch’s Sound Avenue, Loot Recordings, TOR (When We Dip) and Hoomidas Records. Over the years, Pedro's tracks have been supported by names such as Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Eelke Kleijn, Pablo Bolívar, Armen Miran, Matt Darrey and Airwave.

Capelossi’s DJ performances focus on underground dub house and dub techno, deep house, minimal and downtempo. His versatility to move between different styles depending on audience and event, allows him to perform club gigs as well as festivals. He has played innumerable events both in his current home of Barcelona, as well as back in São Paulo, and, indeed, around the world.

We have been following Pedro for years now, and are honoured that he agreed to make us this exclusive guest mix, Institution 085: Pedro Capelossi!

Joining forces in 2019, Canadian duo Oak and Hammer (Spencer Lee and Nick Lelièvre) continue to make their mark and connect with listeners from across the globe. Oak and Hammer have several original releases, including "Mitternacht EP" out now on @polyptychmusic. Indeed, their music has garnered support by dance music legends Paul Van Dyk and Cosmic Gate. We are excited to present this live mix from our recent Summer Solstice Institution event in Winnipeg Canada. This is the first of three sets to be released from that magical night. Mark Mansell opened up the evening for us and packed the dance floor for his Institution debut! 

Born out of a deep love for music, Mark's journey began early on as a humble listener and saxophonist with a broad range of musical influences. Introduced to electronic music in 2020 and first touching a mixer in November of 2022, he brings a fresh perspective and an unbridled enthusiasm for the boundless power of progressive house.

Jereme Oliver (of Artilect Mix Series) is recognized for his precision mixing and carefully curated Progressive House and Melodic Techno DJ sets. With a background that includes residencies at notable venues like Lotus Sound Lounge and Celebrities Night Club in Vancouver, as well as memorable appearances at Spundae Los Angeles and California's legendary Moontribe gatherings, he has had the honor of sharing the stage with some of the most esteemed DJs worldwide.

We are pleased to present Institution 092: Mark MacLeod!

Mark MacLeod comes from a long line of musical talent. He was part of the original rave scene in Toronto, and a regular resident at many of Montreal’s best house music clubs.

Mark is the creator of  Music for Seekers, a project that combines his passion for electronic music with spirituality. He also founded  Deep Down Music, one of the top independent progressive house labels in the world.

His productions and DJ sets range from deep, progressive house to spiritually infused downtempo and organic house. 

Outside of music, Mark is a coach, kundalini yoga student and teacher. He looks to uplift and elevate everyone he comes in contact with. We had the opportunity to meet Mark in person recently, and look forward to getting to know him better through our mutual love of progressive house and the Canadian music scene. Thanks for these two hours of proggy bliss, Mark!

Tel Aviv’s Lonya Koval is one of the driving forces of the international underground electronic music scene. In addition to his extremely busy DJ career, Lonya is a prodigious producer; he has released over 400 techno, melodic and deep house tracks and remixes on labels such as Sudbeat, Parquet, Elevate, and King Street, amongst many others. Lonya’s own label, Asymmetric Recordings/Dip, has grown into a major player in the underground scene.

We have witnessed Lonya’s prowess behind the decks on several occasions, and he has blown our minds each time. Recently, we had the chance to meet Lonya Koval in person, at ADE Amsterdam - he is one of the nicest, classiest, and most down to earth individuals that you can ever hope to meet.

Institution 019: Lonya

Institution 034: RPO

Anyone into the dark and dirty side of progressive house and techno knows the name Rick Pier O’neil (aka RPO). 

Rick Pier O’Neil has a 30 year history in the music scene. He DJ’ed his first club in his native France at the age of 14. He created his first studio at 16, and immediately began a hugely productive career in music production, remixing and mastering.  He has worked for labels such as Sony Music, Polygram, Universal and Motown, and has remixed for artists such as Kool and the Gang, Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Lenny Kravitz, Ultra Nate, Cee Penniston amongst others! 

Eventually, whilst relocating to Barcelona, and subsequently to Mexico, Rick Pier O’Neil started his own music label. Soon, his tracks from RPO Records and GARBAGE Records were supported by the likes of Carl Cox, Anthony Pappa, Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, and Steve Lawler. Amazingly, over the years, he has produced and created over 500 titles!

Originally a child of soul music and techno, RPO has now settled into his signature dark progressive sound. We are beyond honoured that this internationally acclaimed DJ/producer accepted our invitation for a guest mix. Turn this one up to 11!

Institution 034: RPO

John Evexc was born in Germany in 1981. Towards his late childhood he was an enthusiastic listener of electronic music. His passion for playing electronic music began in 2001. In 2015 he founded his project Sonne, Strand und Meer to give more attention to the music he loves and lives. This channel has provided a platform for numerous up and coming artists to showcase their talent.

Snyze was born in Germany. As an enthusiastic listener of electronic music, she was drawn to the dance floors of clubs and festivals, and she quickly developed a passion for playing music herself. From House to Deep House up to melodic Techno, she creates varied and fluent sets which invite you to dance. In 2019 she joined the podcast channel Sonne, Strand und Meer. 

Now, Evexc and Snyze work together on their project and on the decks.

We at Institution have been following both Evexc and Snyze, and listen regularly to their stellar underground Sonne Strand und Meer podcast. As you are about to find out, this duo is super talented; we love this mix!

Institution 036: Evexc & Snyze

Our newest guest mix is by Sri Lankan DJ/Producer, Subandrio. His parents immersed him in the music scene since a young age, and he has never looked back. In fact, his career has been in steady ascent since the 1990s. Subandrio plays regularly around the world, as well as in his home country. Anyone into the international progressive house and techno scene will be familiar with his name, and with his quality productions (including releases on labels such as Sudbeat Music, Balance Music, Beatfreak Recordings, Mango Alley, 3rd Avenue, ICONYC, and many others).

Our Institution crew had the great fortune to dance to a live set by Subandrio, (back-to-back with his fellow countryman Nishan Lee) in Amsterdam at the intimate Modern Agenda boat party, 2018. He is super entertaining to watch, with his subtle smile and nod as he plays. Listen to this mix: his dark and groovy progressive style will surely reveal itself to you as well.

We are super stoked for our newest guest mix, Institution 045: Priya Sen!

Priya Sen is a night club programmer/blogger-turned-DJ. Covering the spectrum of Deep Tech, Progressive House, and Melodic Techno, she is now one of the busiest DJ’s in India. Sen has supported the likes of Guy Mantzur, Guy J, Martin Roth, Hernan Cattaneo, and John Digweed at some of the top venues in her country.

On the production side, Priya has releases on Stripped Recordings, Modern Agenda, ICONYC Noir, Krafted Underground, and others. Furthermore, she hosts a monthly show on Frisky Radio (Provocateur) and looks after the A&R at Canadian labels, Modern Agenda and Modern Architect.
