Schacke - Apocalyptic Decadence

'One Of The Receivers’ is an 8-track adaptation of the text, ‘Notes From A Pandemic’, released by August Skipper in 2020, a collection of poetry and abstract musings on the nature of shared delusion and collective psychosis in the face of extraordinary historical events. The music takes the form of heavy, cinematic drones, interspersed with moments of explosive sound design, a shifting base upon which a narrative unfolds that is at once dream-like, bizarre, foreboding and intimate.

In October of 2020 August Skipper released his text “Notes From A Pandemic” in book format. With text sleekly inlaid on a cloth bound cover, black on black, the materiality of the book contextualizes itself within the historically tense environment it came to fruition within. Hand numbered and signed, a limited edition of 200 copies, the gesture of intimacy between writer and reader is reflective. Skipper advertised the book as a reflection on “the psychic implosion resulting from the initial European quarantine”. Two years past the global phenomena that was, and for some still is, COVID-19 Skipper's negotiation of angst, vulnerability, and confusion was a prescient illustration of what would come to be a particularly turbulent world event.

November 12, 2023 sees the release of “One Of The Receivers”, a re-examination of Skipper’s text within an aural framework. Not simply a spoken word recanting of the text, Skipper uses “One Of The Receivers” as a new setting for dramaturgical collaboration and tonal placement of his writings. Skipper enlists fellow artists Cunce, Angelo Harmsworth, Luna Vassarotti, Samuel Savenberg, Wan, and Ireen Amnes to engender the uneasy surreality that is the post-pandemic zeitgeist into hallucinatory auditory landscapes. Skipper’s voice floats with dramatic affect over his collaborators’ sonic palettes, stylistically challenging his utility as both narrator and sound source in the environments that “One Of The Receivers” inhabits.

Skipper’s journal of uncertainty resonates in a new capacity from its initial inception both in time and media format. Curiously, the recycled investigation within his musings give pause for reflection that, in fact, we are perhaps in no further illuminated a space. Sitting amidst an interstitial contemporary reality of dread, boredom, and confusion we collectively yearn for a new kind of catharsis, one that seems, as yet, beyond our immediate grasp.

Balrog’s debut album, “The Northern Powerhouse” is composed of 8 hard-hitting techno tracks, focusing on heavy, groove-ridden drums, driving basslines and obscure, distorted vocals. His tracks take influence from classic, hard-grooving techno but with a fresh injection of modern, industrial power.
The framework for the tracks was developed in the midst of the fallout from the UK leaving the EU and the numerous attempts to “level up” the north of the country through The Northern Powerhouse scheme, from which the album derives its name. Conceptually, the album is an attempt from the artist to dissociate himself from Brexit and the conservative government which has consistently stigmatised the most vulnerable in UK society and spread lies on an industrial scale in order to push forward their agenda.
           Through the album, a series of linked tracks mirror the raw divisions in society, not just between The North and The South of the UK, but also more widely representing divisions throughout the world.  As the album develops, a more hopeful outcome is suggested, seeing the culture of underground music as having the potential to build connections and incite resistance in an increasingly divided world.

Luigi Traettino aka Thrae, born in 1991 is an Italian artist born in Naples. Dipped in the techno universe since his teens, he began to follow Neapolitan underground and hard techno movements. He started his project mixing the use of modular synthesizers, drum machines and softwares, and producing music between techno and more extreme sounds. In 2019 he founded his own label, Medieval Heresies, focusing on the chaotic side of electronic music, with abrasive atmospheres, harsh sounds and industrial imprint.

The concept for Schacke’s, Apocalyptic Decadence was thought out during the dark days of the first lockdown in 2020, it is essentially about the desire for hedonism and excess being amplified when faced with apocalyptic omens and the annihilation of the familiar. 

When faced with destruction, the psyche approaches a duality, it can either swallow the pill of bitter realism or withdraw and escape into the imaginal, constructing a world of hedonism and pleasure, the paradox of the latter, which the album explores, is that this approach only accelerates the process of impending doom and the delusion that through the pursuit of eschatological pleasure, the world might be orgasmically reborn. 

Apocalyptic Decadence sees Schacke exploring the full spectrum of his musical discography, taking inspiration from the industrial, dark and rough sounds from his early days, combining it with the hyper-sensuality of his later works. The sound is twisted, psychological, sex-fixated and intoxicating. 

The album can be considered the 3rd part in his “Pleasuredome Series”, following his prior two releases on Instruments Of Discipline: ‘Welcome To The Pleasuredome’ & ‘Artificial Intercourse’.

PREMIERE: Schacke - Creeping Up The Tempo (Instruments of Discipline)

Based in Copenhagen, the half Danish half South Korean musician Schacke has been producing sounds of a large variety of different styles since their early teens. Starting with a background in Metal, Noise, and Industrial, Schacke has continually shown a determination to expand and evolve their universe through the exploration of electronic music. Since moving to Copenhagen around ten years ago, Schacke has run an underground label for experimental music, co-owned and run the legendary Mayhem venue in Copenhagen, and released music under a variety of different aliases on local and international labels.

As one of the original members of the Fast Forward collective and agency, Schacke has played a significant role in shaping and defining what has become known as the ‘’Copenhagen Techno Sound’’, which they helped pioneer with their first two techno records on the now-defunct Ectotherm label between 2015-2017 started by Mama Snake and Courtesy. Schacke is also a resident DJ and event organizer at the famous queer sex parties by feminist porn production company ‘’Bedside Productions’’.

Schacke has recently used their musical versatility to make soundtracks for anything from porn movies, feature films, and runway shows for major fashion brands and designers in Paris and New York.

Schacke draws inspiration from a wide range of different genres, usually using techno as only a template to explore and make genre bending fusions using a mixture of unlikely sources. With the combination of hard-hitting beats and rolling baselines, usually mixed with catchy leads and euro vocals, their tracks are always bound together with a precise execution of delicately layered textures, making Schacke’s techno distinctly recognizable yet strangely unpredictable. His debut album 'Apocalyptic Decadence' is out now on Instruments Of Discipline.

Hybral's new EP "Affirmative Action" is a dystopian industrial techno masterpiece that shows evil in its most beautiful and intense form. Contrast records is a roman event and label company based on harder beats. We are happy to premiere Lady Maru's track from their first VA release. Lady Maru is a roman now Berlin based electronic producer and post punk musician.
she became active as a noise guitarist for post punk and no wave bands. 
Her dj career started some years later djing in clubs and underground raves, always trying to combine 2 influences: art punk and techno. Her actual sound as a producer and as a dj is mostly based on dirty fast techno with acid , industrial , sometimes tribe and hardcore influences and she is known for her dynamic, high energetic sets . She is a regular resident at Cieloterra in Rome where she hosts a monthly event for faster and harder sounds.

Through Arson, Incendie’s alter-ego, the artist aims to create an alternative persona developed solely for internet-based influences, from SoundCloud obscure bootleg culture and Youtube’s lost videos, to social media, encompassing witnessing genocides, political polarization and democratic endangerment, algorithmic bubbles development, interspersed by cute cat videos, mental health self-diagnosis and motivational influences to sarcastic memes and absurd brain-rot collages.

Used as receptacle to the algorithms hectic and bottomless content, the artist aims to regurgitate an ever-accelerating sonic mayhem oscillating through abrasive bass and ethereal heart-wrenching melodies, strong rhythmic sections and abstract textural soundscapes.   Within this mix, audio spectrum and its legibility is often challenged through layering and intense songs, going from Dubstep towards DNB and Breakcore, with references to metal and experimental music.
