Premiere: Juheun & Drunken Kong - Open Door [Tronic]

Portuguese techno figurehead Lewis Fautzi returns to Soma with the Properties Specifications EP. A mainstay on the Soma roster for 10 years, Fautzi has progressed through the global ranks to become one of techno’s most recognisable acts. A consistent and competent producer, Fautzi’s sound has evolved through the years yet remains modern and as on point as ever.

Density is a visceral yet hypnotic opener, its subtle drive is pushed via its instantly building, electric synth hook. Severity continues down a dark and hypnotic patch as polyrhythmic percussion guides a pulsating and incessant groove. Malleability once again displays Fautzi’s control over specific elements, each grafting over the other to create new depths of rhythm throughout the track. Tension closes out the EP but does so in emphatic form. The most driving track on the release, thumping low end and crisp percussion are backed with twisted synths and dark atmospheres that swell throughout.

Manchester’s Cleric makes his Soma debut with the Twenty Fourteen EP. Having firmly stamped his name on the global Techno scene over the last few years on various labels and more recently is own CLERGY label, the young producer seeks to continue this run of form with this new 4 tracker. 

Cleric wastes no time with opening track ‘Nowhere Fast’ with it’s bone crushing percussive workouts leading the charge. The slightly more subtle Moxie picks up the baton. Bouncing rhythmic structures give way to a gentle pad midway through yet still retains a forward moving template. Dualistic Soul ups the tempo yet sees Cleric embarking on more of a journey - taking things from his punishing rhythms into more melodic territory. Closing out this debut Soma EP is Arctic Circle, it’s beginnings leaning on more sub heavy elements to create a dark and forceful track backed as usual with Cleric’s shifting rhythms. 

A great example of the new breed of UK Techno producers, Cleric is a welcome addition to the Soma roster.

Club anthems come to mind, with tracks like Alan’s ‘We Do What We Want’, Gary Becks ‘Just One More’ and the recent smash hit ‘Poison’ from UK legend Skream. 

We’ve had some cracking new releases from brand new artists, showcasing some of the best of the emerging talent out there. But for now, we welcome one of Scotland finest producers, and one of Alan’s long-time mates – Harvey McKay.

“We both started out around the same time and I've always been drawn to his style of driving, soulful techno. I signed his three-track McGurk Effect EP to my 8 Sided Dice label back in 2011, so it was exciting to get sent some new music and I fell in love with all three tracks after just one weekend of testing them out." – says Alan

The title track ‘Set Back’ has that old Detroit sound, but modernized with a tough edge. Vocal samples stab through the jacking synth hook and its explosive kick drum ensure some serious fist pumping action required. 

“Balter somehow reminds me of that Love Parade vibe from the 90’s” – says Harvey. Its rolling low end and vocal manipulation sit alongside drum rolls which build a heady groove. “It’s not like it sounds like a 90s track, but it certainly has the spirit of those times” – adds Harvey.

“Hahaha Rush is just a track that's come from hanging out with Gary Beck all the time!”. Its stripped back with a driving percussion power, and maybe the moodiest of the EP with a lot of texture and attitude.

“Alan and I have known each other from the very start, he’s a sound geez and always got his ear on the pulse – it’s so nice to be working together on this release.” – Harvey.

Carl Cox is an industry figurehead who’s legacy in music includes his iconic label Intec, which he runs with friend and business partner Jon Rundell, and the new release is from veteran Frank Biazzi.

Belgium based Frank Biazzi is making his Intec debut following releases on labels including Marco Bailey's MB Elektronics and Christian Smith’s Tronic. Frank Biazzi also heads up his own label Trauma Records, and has remixed tracks by the likes of Ken Ishii and Mauro Picotto.

A stalwart of Belgium’s techno scene, Frank is a regular booking at many of the country’s clubs and festivals, and often plays gigs in other parts of Europe.

Having been involved in music for well over two decades, his early releases on the classic techno label Lupp Records were regularly supported by Carl Cox, Dave Clarke and Monika Kruse.

Frank Biazzi had to remove himself from music for a number of years due to a growing problem with the hearing disorder tinnitus, but now back in the studio, he has spent the last couple of years picking up where he left off.

Track one “Reflection” opens the EP with a thumping groove lead by the pound of the hammering kick drum. Taking its title from the looped vocal sample, the track has a thick sound comprising of only a few core elements. Each of the sounds have an ominous presence creating a raw aggression that’s timeless within the techno genre.

Second on the EP “Ravage” is equally as hard as the first cut with a dark atmosphere and menacing intent. The lead synth takes a clear influence from late '90s techno, which is the style that Frank Biazzi is often associated, and fans of both new and old will not be disappointed with this intently powerful track.

Chopping Purposes EP featuring three proper rave bombs with relentless energy. Title track has a drilling, darkened bassline and punchy kicks that waste no time in setting the mood. The second track called 'Tags' is a more dark and atmospheric track tha travels you into a beautiful journey that will create unforgettable moments on the dance-floors. To seal the deal Axel serving us 'Affiliation' a typical Axel Karakasis techno tune with powerful percussion and melodic basslines. All tracks have been played and tested many times to great reactions!
