Behind the next release on Meant Records are Italian duo Boot & Tax, a relatively new pairing made up of Claudio Brioschi and Cristian Croce. Here they serve up three great originals baced with a stellar remix from Alien Alien.
Before now, Boot & Tax have released two extremely well received EPs on JD Twitch’s Optimo Trax and have also recently had their music licensed to Erol Alkan’s Fabric live 77, so the pair are really on the up.
Title track ‘Brace Brace’ is first and is an elastic, analogue workout with gurgling synth lines riding up and down atop steely drums as punky vocals come on at various intervals. Acid and electro, techno and house all get bottled up in the arrangement, which is fresh and just what you would expect of someone backed by JD Twitch.
The Alien Alien remix of this one is slow and trudging, purposeful and swampy. Snaking synths, coarse claps and a sense of foreboding pervade this most groovy of slo mo cuts.
‘Niente Per Niente’ is a dark but balearic feeling bit of chugging disco, with big licks and groaning bass all gliding along at an inviting tempo. Breathy female ad libs add a sense of character to the shadowy drums and ensure this one will set parties like ALFOS on fire. Lastly, ‘Balkan Youth’ gets much more cosmic with its flipping synths, twinkly melodies and rattling percussive patterns. Ascending ever higher, it takes you on a ride through the cosmos and dumps you out somewhere altogether happier.
This is sure to be a breakout release for Boot & Tax who seem right at the heart of the analogue disco revolution.

Bristol based imprint FutureBoogie delivers rock solid nu-disco and house 12"s for already five years now. Their latest release to date by Lauer certainly didn't disappoint and they're now rolling into spring
with a heavyweight one from dastardly duo Ron & Neil Aka Ron Basejam and Neil Diablo, who between them bring years of musical chops and (most importantly) "the funk" to the table.
In its Original Mix, ‘Perdre Son Éclat’ is a breezy yet sturdy slice of atmospheric synth dance, resplendent with swirling riffs and stammering bass. A thunderous Roland CR-78 drum pattern keeps everything in check, and its sultry french vocals flitter between spoken word and harmonious refrains, lacing the track with a superb "new wave" feel.
Here premiered, a remix comes courtesy of Man Power, the musical enigma that traded on his anonymity for a couple of years before coming clean as the English DJ/producer Geoff Kirkwood. Having released on labels like Hivern, Throne Of Blood and Correspondant, Man Power takes "Perdre Son Éclat" into even deeper territories, crafting a moody and spacious version that respectfully stays close to the original mix. “Daywalker” is a completely original, synthesised outing. A sleazy lead line charms and slithers upwards between layers of syncopated tabla and a sultry acidic groove. The tune spins and twists around this central oriental theme, ever-evolving as layers of detailed percussion and ad-libbed melodies intensify the tone.

Since a year or so I've been sharing my studio space with Ramses3000. The enigmatic DJ and producer has always been someone who's interests had been split between two worlds: world music (for the lack of a better term) and dance music. His electro-chaabi act 'Cairo Liberation Front' is a testament of this. Bottom Forty Records boss Nark returns to his Seattle based label with two tantalizing tracks including remixes from Calypso boss Thomass Jackson and Ali X and Palomo.
Nark, aka Kevin Kauer, has headed up the Bottom Forty imprint since 2017 working with artists such as Doc Sleep, La Fracheur & Léonard de Léonard, Ali X, Ximena, Alisu and Shit whilst maintaining the philosophy oflaying down tripped-out, eccentric productions without conformity. Inspired as a young gamer and fueled by the inspirations of travel and gigs today, Nark has cultivated a set of sounds and ideas that have come together to form his creations today which include releases on labels such as Nein Records, 2MR and Bottom Forty in addition to remixes on Soul Clap, Friends with Benefits and Love Story. ‘Do You See Yourself’ sees Nark invite Mexico’s Thomass Jackson who holds releases on Feines Tier, Gomma and his Calypso Records imprint in addition to Ali X and Palomo.
Title track ‘Do You See Yourself?’ lays the foundations for the EP delivering entrancing modulations, chuggy rhythms and eerie vocals taking small stabs at vanity culture, while ‘The Playing Field’ seethes rattling percussion, acid fueled synths and hypnotic chanting alleviating the senses. The Playing Field’ was inspired by a long night out listening to Optimo DJ in a dark warehouse and it was made later that morning as something to fit into a long, building and cathartic set.
On the flip, Thomass Jackson’s remix of ‘Do You See Yourself?’ maintains the stirring style deploying stabbing bass notes, meandering waves and undulating unearthly atmospheres until Ali X x Palomo round things off with an infectious remix fusing shaky, 808 drums, effervescent grooves and bright 303 flavours throughout.
