welcome to the Don’t Be Afraid Podcast, my name is Andrew. Thank you for listening. I've been looking for a number of examples of brave courageous men of honor and duty to tell you about. I think I may be stuck on military history for a little while because there's so many awesome examples. War find and destroys these great people and it’s terrible. The toughest get destroyed so we lose great men. People are not interchangeable. There’s a lot of messaging today that anyone can do anything and anyone is qualified to do anything. We know that's just not true. I recently watched the documentary on Eugene B Sledge an amazing man who I will be absolutely highlighting in the near future. I did some reading on John Basilone another amazing man cut down in service to those men who send our guys to war. Form perimeters, establish states and lay down their lives protecting them.

In the Siberian Wasteland what would you do to get back home?

This is the story of a Polish Lieutenant sent to the gulags of the Soviet Union and the thousands of miles trekked to get back home. I’m going to talk to you about The Way Back. The Way Back is a sometimes somber adventure film based on the 1956 book The Long Walk.

There are valid arguments questioning the veracity of the tale but I'm going to focus on the story in the film and use it as a backdrop for discussing the Gulag system among other things.

Peter Weir the director has made many successful films not all to my taste or liking including Witness, The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society and, Master and Commander. I think looking at those few it’s more thematically I am challenged to appreciate some of his work. But I'm aware he's a competent storyteller and takes his work seriously he's not making fluff like a Transformers 37 or Avengers Blow up the Earth.

According to Wikipedia Operation Highjump officially titled the United States Navy Antarctic development program 1946 to 1947. Was the u.s. Navy operation organized Bay rear Admiral Richard E Byrd.
 It began August 26th 1946 and ended February 1947. The group participating was known as task force 68. Sounds kind of cool like an early 60s comic book. This consisted of 4700 men 13 shifts and 33 aircraft the primary mission was to establish the Antarctic research base Little America 4.
