Conceived as part of an A/V show with visual artist Nicolò Cervello, ‘Kitbashing’ marks ABADIR’s third album for SVBKVLT.

A growing number of people spend an extensive amount of time watching, scrolling, liking, commenting on and sharing content, whilst at the same time feeding a constant stream of personal data to social media platforms. Social media can be fun and informative, or draining and dark. Either way, their algorithms are purposefully designed to lock users in a continuous state of scrolling. The more time spent online, the more desires, interests and emotions are fed into the algorithm for consumerist ends and reality is reduced to a timeline of curated aesthetics.

Using audio snippets from reels, suggested posts, and sponsored ads, sound objects are cut, micro-edited and meshed together into a collage. Tension is built gradually before falling into a release. Rhythms keep expanding and contracting, simulating the pace of random scrolling on mobile devices. ‘Kitbashing’ is an attempt to break the algorithm: subverting the dynamics by feeding on the algorithm instead of only feeding it.

In 2013, Different Circles launched with Weightless Volume One, a compilation that helped define a new minimalist aesthetic in electronic music. 

Twelve years later and after a six-year pause, the label returns with its tenth release: Ping Volume One.

Like weightless, ping isn’t a genre. It's an approach to anchoring and propelling sound without relying on the steady pulse of a kick drum.

Instead, a single percussive hit — the ping — holds the centre. Dry and high in the mix, or echoing distantly through space, it becomes a temporal anchor. Around it, the rest of the track can undulate, bend, float or collapse.

The term first appeared on Mumdance’s radio show, where playing “the pingy ones” from the Different Circles back catalogue became a running joke. In the Discord community, it evolved into a shared language, with memes, lore and a mascot known as the Ping Devil.

In 2023, Mumdance aired The “Ping Report” a radio show that gathered everything into a coherent moodboard. It included original tracks made by Discord members for the show and set the foundations. From there, more producers began making ping intentionally, and over time, Ping Volume One took shape.

As the idea came into focus, Logos and Mumdance noticed that much of the Different Circles back catalogue, if not explicitly weightless, could now be understood through the lens of ping. It was a sound they had been drawn to long before they had a language to describe it.

Ping Volume One is a document of shared instinct. A collection of tracks connected by feel rather than formula, shaped by years of dialogue between a community of artists and listeners who were drawn to the same sounds & ideas before they had a name.

Having defined a multi-dimensional sonic universe on their acclaimed eponymous debut album, composer/filmmaker Chris Hunt and Korn's James "Munky" Shaffer abandon the familiar and drift towards a kingdom of recursion on EXINFINITE, staring down a tangled mass of mirrored wormholes that hum with eldritch ambiguity. VENERA's sophomore full length is darker, heavier and more percussive than its predecessor, but there's something more intimate wired into its circuitry that's harder to define - something mystical, mysterious and melancholy. Songs materialize from the void only to be dissolved by acidic synths or pierced by Hunt's whetted beats, while Shaffer's dense, tortured riffs are offset by euphoric, time-dilated vocals from FKA twigs, Dis Fig and Chelsea Wolfe. Following their encounter with vastness, VENERA have peered inward, ruminating on the limits of existence and excavating their most deeply buried emotions.

VENERA emerged in 2022 when Hunt and Shaffer veered into their own musical territory after recording with Albanian artist Xhoana X. Improvising together and experimenting with cinematic, sci-fi-inspired sound design, the duo realized the collaboration had potential, so they began developing and evolving the sound further, bringing in assistance from former Mars Volta drummer Deantoni Parks, Queens of the Stone Age's Alain Johannes, post-punk duo VOWWS and LA noise rock legends HEALTH. And after their debut album appeared on Mike Patton's Ipecac imprint in 2023, VENERA kept deconstructing and rebuilding their approach to songwriting, swapping out ambient Eno-esque atmospheres for blown-
out beats and dense textures, and figuring out how to extend the narrative they'd opened up without retreading old ground.

On 'Tear', the duo's new direction can be heard clearly as Shaffer's primal guitar noises are reformed into eerie widescreen expositions that Hunt punctuates with pneumatic kick and snare cycles. Broken up by airlock hisses and luminous synths, the track proposes a backdrop that VENERA continuously transmute, reforging the concept as the album develops. Cult singer-songwriter Wolfe adds a gothic American flavor to the crepuscular 'All Midnights', crooning powerfully over VENERA's vacuum packed rhythms and gaseous synths, and Berlin-based noisemaker Dis Fig follows work with The Body and The Bug on 'End Uncovered' lending breathy, emotionally layered tones to Shaffer and Hunt's tape-damaged industrial pops and whirrs. They launch squelchy, decelerated techno into occult noise reflecting pools on the slithering 'Asteroxylon', and Hunt replies to Shaffer's reverberating plucks with foghorn groans on the ominous, pensive 'uuu773'.

'EXINFINITE' perpetually builds momentum until it hits 'Caroline', an intense collaboration with FKA twigs that isolates her most unearthly tones. Initially curling her words around ominous electrical distortions and mangled, ghostly voices, twigs launches into a charged operatic cry that Shaffer and Hunt meet with skittering cybernetic beats and dense walls of guitar noise. It's this track that fully cracks open VENERA's concept, merging the synthetic with the natural and prompting dysphoria, loss of self and infinite regress. So the blood-curdling noise and sinister ambiance of 'Decreation' acts like a dissociated coda. In the 'EXINFINITE', destruction and death are not overcome, they're intensified until they metamorphose completely.

Új Bála returns to Dalmata Daniel with DDE10, his third release on the label and his first since 2019. In the meantime, he has appeared on compilations and performed frequently at the label’s events before relocating to Brussels, where he has been based for several years. This new EP bridges the past and present of his sound: half of the tracks were written in Budapest in 2018, the other half in Brussels in 2024.

The four pieces form a skewed narrative of fractured club music, from the bubbling, spooky, melodic fragments of Kalt Kult, through the bizarre, schizophrenic interlude of Episode, to the sharp, minimalist leftfield techno of Chaton Rouge, and closing with the broken structures of Titok, which resonate most closely with his latest style.

As with every entry in the DDE series, this 10th episode comes in a highly limited edition 8" lathe-cut (25 copies only) with risograph-printed artwork designed by Daniel Jani (Studio Jetski) and printed by BPZines.
