Following his debut appearance on Anjunadeep’s Explorations 05 earlier this year with ‘Plane Mode’, Dmitry Kuzmin AKA Nuage is back with his new, carefully crafted EP ‘Thor’. In stark contrast to the frigid cold of his home city of St Petersburg, ‘Thor’ is an warming incarnation of uplifting electronica. From the feather-light ‘Electricity’, to the deeper, vocal ridden ‘Whirl’, ‘Thor’ showcases Kuzmin’s capacity for emotive songwriting and nuanced production.

London-based Matt Emery is mostly known for his solo piano pieces, which are delicate, nostalgic, and a little bit sad. Last year (right about this time), Emery released his debut on Injazero Records, titled Empire, which immediately shot up to my top piano records, and inevitably made it on the Best of the Year lists, in the "Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight" entry. Emery also shared his selections with us on his Eternal Bliss mix, put together exclusively for the Headphone Commute Podcast. This Friday, September 7th, the composer returns with a new single, titled “I Put a Flame in Your Heart”. I’ll leave the full band version and the edit for you to discover in all due time, but today I wanted to share this very special Vessels remix, premiering on these pages alone.

As you can hear from this piece (and the remix itself), we’re now in a more gritty territory, with percussive and electronic treatments to the track that puts it more alongside Jon Hopkins, Kiasmos, and Moderat, rather than the softer side of Nils Frahm, and even with the up-front expedient vocals, the track ticks all of the right boxes for this fan and follower. Speaking of which, I’ve witnessed Emery sing during his sold-out live performance (on the very last track) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his voice [which you will hear clearly on the “Vocal Edit” of the release], and that’s a rare event for me notice, as I’m mostly an instrumental kind of fiend.

The single features a piano-only original of the piece, alongside a more post-rock[y] epic edit, which showcases the versatility of this UK artist. “The full band version sees Emery’s music swell with frantic drums, throbbing synths and a full choir culminating in an expansive interpretation, more aggressive in comparison to his gentle and intricate modern classical piano and string repertoire.” A very nice rework of the original, with the “Vessels Remix”, definitely hitting the spot.

Once again, the single is out this Friday, September 7th, 2018, on Injazero Records, available on all of your favourite digital platforms.

Fink - 'See It All'

Fink returns with the second single from his 3rd album of his Ninja Tune Records trilogy, “Sort of Revolution.” 

“See It All,” one of the album’s signature tracks, is blessed with falling piano lines, pulsing electric bass, and a driving rhythm which combines relentless propulsion with sublime subtlety. “Q&A” finds Fink in a deeply soulful and moody a cappella, building a tune from his own vocal parts - layers of harmony buzzing through your ears, as warm and rich as it is clever and hypnotic. Both of these tracks were recently recorded live on Fink’s latest Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 1, while the LP version of “See It All” has just been confirmed as the opening track on the season premiere on the longstanding and now infamous TV show CSI:NY. 

Remixes come from D*L*I*D (fresh from their stunning remix of Phoenix's "1901" single, this remix is only their second!), Emika (Ninja Tune's latest signing, bringing Berlin heaviness to the table), and Fink’s dub alter-ego, Sideshow (critically lauded and internationally sharing 12's with Martyn, remixing Appleblim, and releasing albums on Aus Music). D*L*I*D channels the spirit of J-Dilla, turning the original into a super-heavy head-nodder. Label-mate Emika turns the original into a dark and brooding epic that builds towards a huge finale – a la Massive Attack with serious skunk-paranoia. Sideshow once again showcases Fink’s production cred with an echo box and compression chamber, skillfully stripping the parts and fitting them together into brand new shapes. 

Fin Greenall, aka Fink, is among the more understated of the world’s ‘singer-songwriters’, relying on uncompromising quality of work and an astounding stage presence, rather than major label marketing budgets. A master lyricist and in-demand songwriter, having most recently co-written with John Legend for Legend’s ‘Evolver’ LP as well as two of Ninja Tune’s latest signings: Andreya Triana and Emika. Currently touring the UK with band mates Guy Whittaker on bass and Tim Thornton on drums, Fink is as hectic as ever with a tour of France throughout October; November spent in China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam; the USA in December; and Australia (including 3 headline evenings at the Sydney Festival) and Japan in January.
