Butternut (an LGBTQ+ collective from Ghent) resident Ampe invites you to her signature steamy bath of fast paced groovy music with all kinds of textures and yet-to-discover sounds that put you in just the right mood.

For a job that’s so dependent on aviation, a lot can go wrong for a DJ in the airport. Apart from losing a record bag in transit, one of the biggest fears you can have as a touring artist is finding out your flight’s been cancelled.

This is exactly what happened to Paula Temple on the night of her first appearance with us back in May. When her Saturday evening flight from Glasgow was called off at late notice, the odds of her making it down to London in time were stacked against her. 

The stars aligned when she found out Levon Vincent also needed to make the same journey, and the pair embarked on an ambitious 8-hour car journey to London. When she finally pulled up on Charterhouse Street 10 minutes before her scheduled set time, we were already impressed before she’d spun her first track.

As it turns out, she then delivered one of our favourite club debuts of the year. Taking rein of Room Two in the peak of the night, her selections were equal parts heady and destructive, delivered with a surgical approach that only comes with an absolute grasp of the craft. 

On New Year’s Eve we invite Paula Temple back to Farringdon, and as the year draws to a close we felt it as good a time as any to look back on her transcendental debut at the club. Speaking of the set, Temple told us: “The long journey to the club was rewarded a thousand times over by how well everyone received my set. It made me very happy to be at fabric!”

American producer Dustin Zahn readies the next release on Rekids Special Projects this April with four vigorous cuts entitled ‘Take The Throne’. 

Dustin Zahn has been flying the techno flag for two decades, releasing on labels like Rekids when not helming the Berlin-based Enemy Records, a label which has released music from artists like fellow US techno stalwart Ambivalent, ARTS boss Emmanuel, and Innervisions' producer Yotam Avni. Zahn is also respected for Train Wrecks, his weekly podcast series inviting members of the house and techno community to discuss a wide variety of music and industry related topics and stories. 

The release opens with the thumping kicks and sci-fi melodies of ‘Take The Throne’ before rolling into the dubby tones, infectious claps and rattling white noise of ‘Decorum’. The atmospheric ‘Nameless Midnight’ then follows, packed with echoing synths, tantalising effects and a twisted vocal sample that weaves throughout, arriving at the final track ‘Subtle Flex’ where escalating synths meet syncopated percussion.

Six years ago, Russian-born Marina Rubinstein was a raver living in Tel Aviv with dreams of becoming a DJ. After saving up enough money, she bought a one-way ticket to Berlin, where she quickly worked her way up from playing small rooms to 20 people to playing the world's biggest techno club, Berghain.

Dr. Rubinstein's story is a familiar one, but her love of '90s acid techno and life-affirming rave tunes helped the fledgling DJ to stand out in a city then dominated by darker, more hypnotic sounds. Today, she's a globally respected selector with a joyous, life-affirming style.

This week's FACT mix is a snapshot of Dr. Rubinstein's dreamier side, packed with hazy breakbeat, electro and acid; it rarely climbs above 115BPM, with tracks from Lake Haze, Holger Flinsch and Legowelt amongst the tracks that will have spotters taking notes. It's one for the 7am crew.

Continuing on from a series of successful EPs on Token including last year’s Ostinato, Antigone returns to the label with Rising, his first experiment with the LP format. Rising is an album that exerts itself to stimulate the mind and the body simultaneously. As such, it’s a record that gives the dramatic illusion of having a physical pulse.

The artist, real name Antonin Jeanson, already has a substantial body of work behind him. Considering his previous releases on Token, Indigo Aera, Concrete Music and Taapion, and his experience as a resident at Concrete in Paris, the level of artistic maturity he possesses while still being under 30 is highly impressive yet unsurprising at the same time.

For Rising, Antigone manages to oscillate between great ambient introspections carried by spacey synths and deconstructed rhythms, and elegant techno epics that are suitable for listening pleasure as much as for the pure abandonment of reality.

The title track’s delicate arpeggios meld into strings with stirring cadences, delivering above and beyond the standard intro, as it breaks and continues for a second round with added depth. Sands of Time stands out with tiny, breathy samples, pitch bent into something ever different from the last. Lost and Found’s granulated percussion sits adjacent to a cinematic sea of strings, while Out There provides a tasteful fragment of the sci-fi reverence many listeners demand of a techno album. Duality of Mind hints once again at the measured moods of Cantor Dust, his Token debut EP. It Follows alludes to supernatural horror with call-and-response variants on an almost microtonal theme. Infinite Limit’s tension from the offset brings a UK-influenced sound to the record, which continues with the IDM-feeling Dume and the equally glitchy and pulsing Love Field, while the in-between Irreversible is an immersive piece with a piercing high-end, guaranteed to induce a physical sensory response.

In this set Hyper Octane shows us his more techno rave side, playing high paced energetic music. In the zoom chat during this stream the set was hailed as being one of the best and dancable of the series of streams of Club in the Cloud X VICE.

'Everything energetic' is how Hyper Octane's sound can be described best. Drawing inspiration from a multitude of genres spread across techno, acid, rave, EBM, early hardstyle and euro tech/trance. The symbiosis is the constant flow of energy, which is in line with his personality and attitude behind the decks. Guaranteed to set the crowd on fire, whilst building on the vibe that was already being set.

Originating from the dark depths of the underground and rave scene, he is no stranger to rough sets and environments. Armed to the teeth with club destroyers, he is well equipped to make any crowd dance.
