Quarented Rats

Southeast Asia is made up of diverse dance music markets that feel strongest when united. A steady stream of cross-border collaborations has come to define the region's underground nightlife, with Bangkok-based Sunju Hargun at the forefront of many of these exchanges. Over the years, he's honed a signature sound of minimal techno, tribal rhythms and deep downtempo while playing in Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Inspired by the traditional music of these countries, his DJ sets and productions are lush tonal sound baths, with plenty of nature references. Shimmering ambient evokes misty mountain tops while whiffs of Goa trance nod to beach sunrises.

His current project, Siamese Twins Records, is also rooted in pan-Asian connections. A platform to explore old-world chants and ceremonial percussion, the label hosts much of Hargun's own work, including Bollywood-inspired acid made as Mogambo, a production outfit he runs with Jerom Doudet. All these myriad styles are present on Hargun's RA Podcast, an hour-long trip where flickering synths reverberate like gongs before morphing into an amorphous mass of dub techno, jungle noises and meandering modular sequences.

After two anniversary events thrown in exile, Ankali celebrated its fifth one at home. Finally we had a chance to spread the programme through all our spaces over the course of one long weekender. As a little throwback, we are publishing recordings of three sets which guided us through Saturday’s nightfall: Zozo bringing the dancers into an ecstatic climax in the blazing hot Garden; Schaumstoff tuning our ears with Planeta’s soundsystem, making them ready for anything; and Kosmic Skaut on Ankali’s floor helping us realise, that the second night will be twice as emotional and hard to leave as the first one.

The Berlin-based DJ and producer delivers an electro disco for us to dance the night away to. Lazercat makes disco house and electro, and has released music on labels including @bordelloaparigi, @snufftrax and Home Breakin Records. Her Vector Dance EP includes a dreamy acidic remix by @vertical67. She’s performed for @mechatronicamusic, Intergalactic FM and Dreams of Neon alongside other electro nobility. With a style forged in the ’90s Midwest rave scene, Patrick Russell(@ptrckrssll)'s Detroit-bred origins are still very much on show today. Now based in New York, he has found a harmony between retaining his acid-driven musical influences and broadening his palette towards the deeper and more psychedelic. A @thebunkerny resident and Labyrinth (@mindgameslaby) Festival regular, and still a key figure of Detroit’s famed No Way Back parties, Patrick has gained what borders on legendary status within the international electronic music community through a combination of integrity, hard work and uncompromising ability to weave storytelling into his work as both DJ and producer. 

Like many artists, his recent selections have ventured away from the dance floor – with the COVID era offering a freedom of exploration that’s on full show in his Patterns of Perception 76. Of the mix, Patrick says: “For some time now, I’ve been sitting on a number of tracks around the 75/150 BPM axis that I’ve been dying to play, and wanted to do so without venturing into full-on techno or electro. This seemed like the right opportunity to present them, and also throw in a few curve balls while I was at it. Challenge accepted.”
