Super Magic

A children's fairy tale as a name giver? One might have expected that from economists, but from astrophysicists? Well, they were also inspired by economists when it came to finding a catchy, symbolic replacement for the term habitable zone. This is the name given to the area around a star in which life could arise on possible planets.


Very roughly speaking, the distance to the star must allow temperatures at which water remains liquid on the surface of a planet. According to the ideas of terrestrial biology, life cannot develop without this.

For decades, this was a rather theoretical consideration. The few scholars who thought about habitats in other star systems first spoke of ecosphere or life zone, until they finally agreed on habitable zone. Sounds nicely learned. But with the discovery of the first exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, at the end of the millennium, academic as well as general attention increased enormously: Is there something out there? Is there distant, alien life? Could there be? With each newly discovered exoplanet is meaningfully tapped: Isn't it so close to its star that it burns up everything? Doesn't it orbit it so far that everything freezes on its surface?

It's like in a fairy tale with Goldilocks and the three bears, where everything has to be just right. The porridge must not be too hot, the little bear's chair undamaged, his bed unused. Economists have long spoken of a goldilocks economy when moderate growth coincides with slight inflation. A fairy-tale term - now also for an astrobiological concept.

Brevity Of Life (Goldilocks)

Life is amazing. Flowers grow in sidewalks, hawks make nests on top of skyscrapers, sun is warm, rain is life giving.
I think we complicate life by confusing it with "living" by goals and imposed "desires" that make us anxious: need more money/have to live in a penthouse/bigger faster cars/
It's not bad to work and produce but when you lose sight of mortality/empathy/sharing. then your "productivity" will not bring you satisfaction or peace.
we are very temporary. It is just as easy to care as it is to hoard and to help as it is to hate.

it's not that complicated

Phil McC (aka Waveology)is a talented keyboard player, and he offered this piano improvisation for me to engage with a melody and lyric. Although Phil went on to experiment with a band arrangement (https://soundcloud.com/philmcc-1/place-i-go-ft-terry-wigmore-jazz-orchestra-arrangement), I was always partial to the piano's simplicity and the space it afforded the vocal to sit in an imagined lounge, and that was the sound that inspired the lyrics.  So, with the last breath of autumn, it seemed to be a fitting time for a melancholic muse in Phil's lounge, a darkened room, a half consumed whisky (Crown Royal) in one hand, a mic in the other, cue the music, Phil...

I started writing my own music in the late 90's. Mostly I write about everyday events. Ways to build a song vary but I usually find the melodies when I sit down with my guitar and after that  I add a little bit of everything.
It happens that I sometimes dream songs too and then I usually sneak up in the middle of the night and hum a little quiet when I record on the phone, I don't want to ruin anyone's sleep :)
I write, sing and produce all my songs on my own.
