Atemporal Mix series is a sonic cinematic salute to the now, the new, the past, the future — mixed up, presented and re-presented.

It is a collection of synaesthetic short stories, songs that caught my eye, layers, vibes, breakbeat graffiti, years of digging, vinyl foundations, cliffhanger drops and digital bridges.

I started DJing in 1995. Been around. Moved to London 99 and, inspired in part by pirate radio, launched ATR / Advanced Theory Radio 'round 00, with friends. At the time we were one of only a small handful of online radio shows. This was way before streaming, before mp3s.

Every Monday we'd gather the crew, the vinyl, the 1200s, jazz, soul, funk, jungle, techno, hip hop, drum & bass, ambient, house, electro, etcetera. We'd record to minidisk, transfer to computer, convert to RealAudio, upload to a server and link it on our website. Rinse and repeat.

After a hiatus, I began a special edition ATR mix in 2011, then lost file in 2012, then found it again in 2022. Damage from the cryogenics was minimal. 

I continued to work on it, extended the mix, formed the fire and it is here as Pilot / 1122 - the first episode of the Atemporal Mix series, a branch of ATR / Advanced Theory Radio.

Musta been 1996 when my good friend and musical genius Scott Peterson AKA Prince Enoki, handed me a copy of Timeless by Goldie on a hot summer day in a little corner of Canada. One year later, glorious 1997, I was deep down in that Blue Note basement and Metalheadz Sunday Sessions, like a revelation. 99/00 I was living in London and regular at Metalheadz every Sunday, 7pm sharp.

This sound has been a big part of my life for a long time, and I'm not the first to say it of course, but Metalheadz is one of the most legendary and significant music labels of any era and any genre. Itself spanning decades and connecting with every major drum and bass producer. Add in it's relationship with Reinforced, and you see a vast empire of music, one that connects across the planet, culture and time. 

Around 1997-98, me and the crew were deep into graffiti, we haunted & colored freight train yards with throws, end to ends and whole cars. It wasn't the NYC subway, but it's what we had and we loved it. We'd go from the train yards to the clubs, to the DJs playing hip hop, funk and soul and in-between we'd blast Platinum Breakz. It was a true Golden Era.

For this mix I dug in and around the Metalheadz catalogue on Bandcamp and my vinyl collection, pulling old & new vibes, injecting graffiti history, painting an end to end version of those days & nights between the train yards and the clubs.

I've always had a love for all styles of music. I get fired up when a song or album or artist creates something that blends numerous styles into one fresh thing. So recent work by two artists has freaked me out in the best way. 

And are they really two individuals or a multiplicity? In a sonic movie starring Jim Cole and Charlie Fieber as Philip D Kick, Om Unit, 0860 and Fracture, they fractalize and connect, in my estimation, every significant dance genre of the past 40 years — touching on hip hop, electro, drum & bass, jungle, techno, dub, dubstep, grime, trap, garage, house, footwork, and who knows what else — shaping it all into something that's ultra fresh, respectfully nostalgic and seemingly a mirror of our contemporary crazy world. Fast, slow, old, new, lots going on, yet — coherent. A welcome signal amongst so much noise.

I've had Om Unit and Fracture on rotation for years, they've both got a megaton of music to dive into and I love it all. Currently, Off World Tales by Philip D Kick and Fracture's 0860 project (a salute to and celebration of London pirate radio) stands out in a big way. Profound even.

I hadn't intended to do a mix of (primarily) one or two artists but, starting off with Orbit by Philip D Kick and — the thing took off on a wild life of its own, with some sorta gravitational pull drawing specific moons and planets and ships into its sphere. I barely even remember making it and it seems to me this is some of the most futuristic stuff out there.

Plus it's super fun.
