Over the past few years, German DJ Marie Montexier has built and cemented her reputation as one of the finest groove merchants around, gracing the stages of the most highly-regarded clubs and festivals out there including Berghain, Fabric, De School and more. Her eclectic selections tap into the broadest spectrum of rhythms and influences, from tribal-informed electronics to straight out surgical indus-minded payload onto breaksy delicacies, propulsive house NRG and jagged funk from outer-space. "Designing clubs is about understanding psychology." The famed architects talk about bringing emotions, durability and hidden logic into era-defining nightlife spaces.

How do you design the world's best clubs? Studio Karhard, the architecture firm started by Thomas Karsten and his wife, Alexandra Erhard, in 2003, know exactly which ingredients go into a successful nightlife space. The Berlin-based duo are the visionaries behind Berghain and ∄ in Kyiv, as well as a number of private residences, businesses and smaller venues around the world. Their specialty, they say, is salvaging forgotten spaces and resurrecting them to serve a new purpose.

In this RA Exchange, Karsten talks about first coming across the building that's now Berghain and working tirelessly with engineers and city planners to preserve its neoclassical facade. As he explains, creating a memorable atmosphere goes beyond just designing for aesthetics. There are countless hidden design features that serve to make venues like Berghain comfortable.

But according to Karsten, Studio Karhard's masterpiece is ∄, which they began designing in 2018. He describes the special experience of first visiting the abandoned brewery—which was then in extreme disrepair—and bringing the lessons they took away from building Berghain to make this Ukrainian space their most successful project yet.

Nuremberg’s Agy3na is up next in the Podcast roster with a call to explore his singular and nostalgic beats. The German selector got his break on his city’s dancefloors, and added experience as curator and organiser for a number of parties as part of a local promoter collective. Alongside his nighttime ventures, the fledgling talent has also been hard at work pursuing parallel studies in psychology and cognitive science, adding another layer to a varied set of inputs that has made his contributions to music all the more distinctive. There’s another layer too, his experience of blackness in Germany has brought him in contact with the world of Afrofuturism and the promise it brings, soundtracked now by a developing voice that packs a punch with its playful take on electro, house and 90s club culture. It’s music for the future, an aesthetic that plays with melody, percussion and fine-tuned technique to offer up a fresh take on old genres. In his new stomping ground of Leipzig, Dennis Höpfel blends music with research work and is sure to give the city something new and much needed. From set to set his thrashing rhythms have shown a sensitivity and awareness that’s deeply personal, a way of connecting with the world around him and giving something back. Tbilisi stalwart BMI brings his esoteric sound to Zenaari’s Podcast series for this next instalment. The Georgian DJ is a heavy-hitting talent on home turf, frequently stalking the capital’s venues and actively involved in several cutting-edge collectives and projects like Substract, Octachoron, Fear Pollution, 3 Suli, and Soulvent. His fluid, ever-mutating sound is smart and expansive techno that’s plugged into a wide scope of references from the outer fringes of experimental music, tying them neatly together and offering a reflective take on contemporary electronics that challenges and rewards its listeners. Clocking in at 62 minutes, this episode offers a glimpse of the inner workings of BMI’s mind: sounds that click, shift and refract, not a one out of place and coming together in a fuzzy, echoing whole.
