木漏机日 ~ this mix is a very personal thing for me and it is so close to my heart that i want to make it public for all the people out there.
there is a lot of emotional work behind this 2 1/2h. musically, In all my years, I’ve never dedicated myself so intensely to one thing. it was really a beautiful experience and gave me a lot of joy.

Happy new year and welcome to 2024! Bright Patterns welcomes Garçon from Switzerland for this new chapter of the show. He’s a resident at Elysia in Basel and co-runs Amenthia Recordings with Agonis. More often than not, we have the pleasure of hearing his deep cerebral explorations of rhythm, building sets and mixes with thoughtful intention for the dance floor. While I and many others enjoy these recordings again and again, he presents a softer side here that’s equally as brilliant. “I wanted to play music i'd like to listen to in the morning or stay in bed to” he added. Introspective Electronics w/ Avsluta x Netil Radio | January 24

Today I am so happy to welcome my friend fka boursin to Deep Mind Music, with a quietly reflective entry for the end of January. 

It was around this time of year back in 2022, that I first remember having a deep chat with fka boursin about our mutual interest in the power of ambient. We were both equally enthused to encounter another AmbientAddict and quickly rattled off artists, labels and tracks for each other to check. I have found in fka boursin a similarly discerning soul, not just in music, but life in general, and his intricate mix for Deep Mind Music reflects his thoughtful character.

A patient mix that rewards patient listening, fka boursin has crafted a narrative that skilfully dances between washes of sepia-toned warm drones, and–as he puts it below–“material sounds”, such as whirling whizzes of machines or twittering birds, which give us a sense of place. The perfect soundtrack to a meditative drift of the mind between thoughts and reality. I have greatly enjoyed listening to it on cold misty walks over the past week, and hope you do too ☁️🪶🤍

Some words from fka boursin about the mix:

When considering the themes for this mix, I drew from the different approaches that Sybil and I use in our work. Sybil says that themes for her come from “more of a feeling/colour/texture than something     explainable” which is in contrast with my desire for explicit material reference points. Though these approaches might be seen as existing on a somewhat linear abstract vs material scale, there is a large overlap in the sonic characters that they each employ. Here, I have deliberately mixed with tracks that perhaps encourage one to get “lost” (abstract) before pulling the listener back into the room using what I consider to be “material” sounds. Paradoxically though, those sounds are often perceived as feeling/colour/texture anyway, leading Sybil and I to the same musical end points. To me, this firstly emphasises the limitations of audio and secondly may partly explain why Sybil and I get on so well.

fka boursin ~ Deep Mind Music Vol.29

For the sixteenth episode of our Herbarium mix series, we invited Endurance (@joshua-stefane), the label owner of @muzaneditions. He is a master when it comes to exquisit ambient journeys and therefore we are very happy to feature one of his beautifully told stories. 

For this mix he chose Chrysanthemum. Here is why:
I chose the chrysanthemum as the flower for this mix - specifically the Chrysanthemum / morifolium hybrid species, which originated in China and is also popular in Japan. Aesthetically, I think it is one of the most beautiful flowers, with its multitude of florets radiating from the center, or cascading down like willow branches, depending on the type. I love how such flowers can feel so complex and deep, simply through the arrangement of similar elements - and that is something that guided this mix. Using tracks from artists I love, old sound effects records from the 60s and 70s, and my own live improvisations and field recordings, I tried to layer similar or repeating elements over each other to create a complex and cohesive whole. About Endurance:
Endurance is the ambient project of Canadian-born Joshua Stefane. Using modular synthesizers, field recordings, and cassette tapes, Endurance’s sound has become increasing minimal and tonally-focused over the years, employing a minimum of elements to create a maximum of expressiveness. In addition to releasing from labels such as Constellation Tatsu and Mystery Circles, Endurance also curates the Japan-based tape label Muzan Editions. He is part of the organizing team for Moment, a techno festival in Nara. Herbarium No 16 - Endurance - Chrysanthemum

It is transience's aim to create a temporary suspension of reality where listeners can recenter and reflect with a supportive sonic environment. During the current g3noc1de in G a z a and the surrounding areas, many of us are feeling massive amounts of grief, anger, and all manner of other emotions that it's hard to know what to do with. In Germany, and in particular in Berlin, we're witnessing new levels of state repression on freedom of movement and expression. It's really important during such times to take care to regulate ourselves and help care for one another, so that we can organise and continue the ongoing work of fighting for freedom. 

For this episode of transience we are glad to welcome  to have sound artist + designer, DJ and radio host, MINQ @soundslikeminq as this month's guest. transience host, Lou Drago met MINQ at the ambient floor at Whole Festival 2022, and soon bonded through their shared interests in sound-based mindfulness practices such as Deep Listening. MINQ has been facilitating workshops with the aim to discover what lies at the intersection of mindfulness, movement and sound in QTBIPoc-centered spaces with their research project and workshop series Sonic Utopias | Research Lab. They also have a monthly show on Refugee Worldwide called Sonic Utopias.
