April Bourne 'Ox-Eye EP'

March 23 marks the release date of ’Ox-Eye EP’, April Bourne’s debut on Bound Centre. Inspired by the UK and its diverse sounds like Grime, UK Funky and Garage Dutch born April Bourne started producing music a few years back. Ox-Eye marks his debut EP on Bound Centre after his promising first steps into the public with his track Crying In The Club which was featured on a compilation by Austrian label Ashida Park. His sound is best categorised as friendly sounding melodic ambient with the use of gated synths and minimalistic percussion he calls pitter-patter beats. The concept of the EP is based on the daisy or ox-eye as it is also called. Where nature is often smothered by synthetics and the rise of human technology, the daisy merges and thrives in these surroundings. This interplay between the organic and the synthetic symbolises April Bourne’s search for balance in his sound.

Scanning out the dustiest corners of the label's bizarre roster to offer a complete look at Unknown Precept's soul and vision; it brings together 18 tracks of unreleased material and collaborations recorded by our closest friends. Concept In Practice: ABADIR's 'Voices Capsule' Mix

In June 2021, an unmarked package arrived at the Psychic Liberation headquarters. The small box, which had no return address, contained three items: a thumb drive, a printed message from a notes app, and a small satchel of what seemed to be carambola seeds. The note reads: “We were raised in the ashes of time. This is a philosophy of live. Made while sailing the seas of chaos on our humble houseboat, a place you’ll come to know. But do not seek us out. We are gone.”


Unwilling to risk a computer virus, or humor what was maybe a prank, the thumb drive sat on a shelf for a number of weeks. Eventually, label head Nick Klein decided to take it to the Royal Library of the Netherlands and open its contents on a computer there, just in case.


The thumb drive was titled jd swift. It’s unclear whether this is the artist’s name, the title of the album, or both. The recording opens with an alien spaghetti western: a chopped voice and wobbly single note, signaling that this is a strange place. The percussion is directionless at first, but warbled samples, including the nostalgic clink of getting a coin in Donkey Kong, give way to mutant structure.


Distorted twinkles, dubby hats, and big paranoid kicks occasionally swirl into lo-fi hurricanes, but mostly this music resides in the calm but weirdly charged eye of the storm.


Though little can be assumed about the context of these sonic creations, they seem to be the result of extended jams. The toolbox includes broken arpeggiations and fuzzed bells, air horns and watery pannings. This is twisted globalism, a nexus of serenity and catastrophe, a series of unrecognizable landscapes that read like field recordings though they are intentional creations. The inscrutability of their delivery captures perfectly the sense that artists are no longer individuals or collectives—they are circuits of larger machinery.


Meandering between sounds, these sui generis recordings don’t quite fit the categories of contemporary electronic music. Junk ambient, marginal acid… it’s a struggle to appropriately describe the sounds. Part of this difficulty comes from the artist’s (or artists’) purposefully self-effacing strategy, a circumventing of the systems that edify and circulate art based on identity, practice, and vision. Indeed, this is one of the reasons PL was strangely attracted to these recordings in the first place.


All eight of the individual pieces that make up jd swift are untitled, but are labelled with the time at which they start in the recording. The first track is titled 0:00. Does this hint at new beginnings, or a stance against time itself? If you find yourself on a coast, keep an eye out for a houseboat. Its occupants may know the answer.

Island of the Hungry Ghosts is a hybrid documentary that moves between the natural, human and spiritual worlds. Located off the coast of Indonesia, the Australian territory of Christmas Island is inhabited by migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean, in a movement that has been provoked by the full moon for hundreds of thousands of years. Poh Lin Lee is a trauma therapist who lives with her family in this seemingly idyllic paradise. Every day, she talks with the asylum seekers held indefinitely in a high-security detention centre hidden in the island’s core, attempting to support them in a situation that is as unbearable as its outcome is uncertain. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their “hungry ghost” rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home.

This album presents the original score Aaron Cupples created for the film. Rich in texture and harmonics, the music is characterised by the bespoke instruments and recording techniques employed in its creation. The soundtrack also features sound recordist Leo Dolgan’s vivid field recordings. All captured on Christmas Island, the four pieces recall insect choruses, strange and ominous bird calls, erupting blowholes, fire, ocean, and Buddhist prayers for the dead.

“Drawing on discussions with director Gabrielle Brady, I began to perceive the island itself as the protagonist, with its own ancient rhythms and cycles set against the transitory human stories it endures. It was my intention to give voice to the island through the score. Imagining what this might sound like, emanating from deep within the landscape, I settled on a handmade long-string instrument. This single 13-foot long wire was tuned, bowed, and electromagnetically oscillated to create slowly evolving textures and deep layers of resonance.

From this foundation, the score introduces rhythm inspired by traditional Chinese festival drumming and chanting of Buddhist nuns recorded on Christmas Island by sound recordist Leo Dolgan. Working closely with him, the score is intentionally kept dark in timbre to allow a merging with the intricate nature recordings, which often play simultaneously with the score.

As the film’s narrative unfolds, harmonic movement and finally melody emerge, bringing a theme to the human stories. Their life rhythms and cycles interwoven with those of the island.” – Aaron Cupples

Rick Silver & James Vernon’s fairly young but highly promising label has been releasing the highest standard of stripped back and stylish, dubbed-out sonics and have carved out a little section for themselves in the electronic music scene after honing a dynamic and appealing production style. Previous releases from the two label bosses and enigmatic artist Yallahs have captured the attention from various established names and they continue to show their flair for all things raw and exciting on their ‘Stories, Chapter One’ release.

James Vernon’s ‘Web Flight’ rounds off the EP with rough-edged modulations, looping rhythms and haunting pads that spiral in and out of focus with pure eccentricity.

Premiering "Running Parallel" by Sistema Aero, , the collaborative effort between Charles Taciturn and xenonyms label boss GFXIII. Out on 18th February as a two-tracker single via xenonyms

The lead track sets off the genre bending mood of the release by incorporating distorted cumbia and jungle breaks inside a dreamy, buoyant atmosphere. In contrast 'Tierra Maldita' reveals itself as a sinister four-to-the-floor mutation full of hypnotic synths and eerie vocal sections.
