Premiere CF: Ben Ritz — Easily Disturbed [Fixed Rhythms]

Our first premiere of the week comes from Ctrls on DJ Stingray’s imprint, Micron Audio. Ctrls experiments electro and bass heavy tracks on this release to great effect. The Danish producer unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives.

The Ctrls project came to life in 2012 and the Danish artist immediately made his mark on the techno scene. His fast paced and futuristic techno based sound has now been well established with a stream of respected music on labels such as Token Records, Earwiggle, and Key Vinyl.

The Danish artist has held it down at a number of high-profile venues throughout the world, including Tresor, Fold, Berghain, Khidi, Fabric, Kit Kat, Fold, and Club Drugstore, as well as a residency at Ved Siden Af, Copenhagen’s purest electronic dance music club.

For his next release the formidable techno artist releases on DJ Stingray’s imprint Micron Audio as it opens its doors to an external artist for the first time. Across four tracks, the Danish producer unravels a dark and funky electro core, taking inspiration from the rapidly intertwining codependence between technology and society. As digital twins, metaverses or humanoid robots lodge themselves deeper into our surroundings, Ctrls unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives.

Encouraged by Micron Audio boss Stingray to delve into the darker productions as a means of exploring a contemporary electro sound, Ctrls fixes a hypnotic heft with fresh industrial sound.

‘Subroutines’ is a dark and heavy bass exploration, as Ctrls experiments with sub heavy drums and glitchy synths. Alarming drones play off inky reverb swells. Ctrls captures a cataclysmic atmosphere with profound groove.

“Now it's finally time to uncover the first release of Artaphine Records. Here two worlds collide creating various shapes in between. On one hand we have Tom Place, who is more known for his breakbeat excursions on Childsplay and Fly By Night, while Clotur takes more of a dive into the deep and groovy style of techno that resulted in releases on Counterchange and his own label Warok.

Kicking off the EP with the solo track from Tom Place, setting off with the same pace as 'Tearing Down Your Walls', released on our VA last year. After that 'Melting Shapes' hits the perfect example of finding balance between artists with different production styles. With 'Object Model', the artists take the offbeat excursion while Clotur closes the EP with a 13-minute journey to the various corners of his production skills.”
