For Feeling Blue’s fifth release comes one of the most hotly-tipped producers out of Ōtautahi, Christchurch - Shli, making their label debut with new 4-track EP ‘Backrooms’.

The EP feels like both an ode to classic, percussive club production with signature and recognisable sample and pattern selections, as well as an exploration of the new wave of underground, weaved with dark, clever, distorted and intricate melodic elements right throughout. The result is the perfect catalyst of current underground and house party “backroom” culture found only in New Zealand.

‘Anemoia’ kicks off laying out the sonic palette for the EP; a powerful 2-step beat, dubby synths intricately affected and interacting effortlessly with it, and a deep, wobbly bass wrapping all elements together. ‘Sepia’ moves to 4-to-the-floor, the kick sometimes broken and syncopated to continue its relentless movement through off-beat synth stabs and flourishes. ‘Xylem’ carries an early Floating Points-esque energy; cleverly stereo-placed percussion fills out a more simple but no-less captivating melody, the toms and bass line almost conversing with each other. The title track ‘Backrooms’ closes the project, seeing Shli flex his production prowess through atmospheric and downtempo hip-hop chops.

Arriving on a limited 200-copy translucent orange vinyl, 'Dark REM' on Cuddling Monsters’ second release on Mask Records is a hunched-over and direct dub techno cut with forceful drums and deft percussion, adding texture next to warm, sustained pads. There's a real sense of urgency in this most frictionless groove, which means it cannot fail to cast a spell on the dance floor. The fantastic 'Event Horizon' is then infused with the aura of deep space - sustained chords with a cosmic edge add vast scale to the well-programmed deep techno drums. 'Monster Talk' is a mid-tempo dub track with underlapping drums and rattling, rusted chords that disappear to infinity. It's cavernous and evocative, with myriad little details occupying the mind. 'Temporal Aura' is another standout sound that blends deep techno, dub, and minimal into a serene soundtrack that encourages inward reflection while driving onwards through the cosmos. Mask Records founder ZentaSkai and his creative partner Laura Merino Allue are Berlin mainstays helping shape the underground. Cuddling Monsters is a new project that debuted on the label in March. It is all about crafting music with analogue instruments, which they believe "offer distinctive sonic qualities, creative constraints, and genuine sound reproduction”. They explore Detroit-infused house, dub techno and minimal soundscapes with raw edges and a great sense of atmosphere.

The London underground house scene is vast and plentiful when it comes to bedroom producers and wide-eyed DJs. Many flicker and fade out, lost in the constant cycle of releases, events, and one-off collaborations.

Stealth-like, but incredibly consistent, Memphis Glass has withstood the waves of an ever-changing scene, bringing forth his own style to a crowded genre. A tasteful ear for melody and classic house rhythms are at the core of his sound, apparent in a growing back catalog of EPs, singles, and 12”s.

On his debut EP with Image Research, ‘We Don’t Need Much’ fills the room with introspective dance floor bliss. 4 tracks that showcase what the producer does best; outsider house that’s as fresh as it is timeless. The water was a strange colour. It sparkled and flickered beneath the blazing heat of the mid afternoon sunshine and the radiant turquoise stretched as far as the eye could see out into the distance.

They floated atop their little boat, watching as the water rippled and washed against the stern.

It had already been a long day out on the water. At times it was hard not to become lost in thought as they floated quietly on through the afternoon. Dry land was still several hours away, the dreamy turquoise was all that might keep them company for now.
