For our 40th milestone in the mix series, we couldn't be more delighted to host the amazing Faery from Bristol, UK. Freya's approach integrates textured ambience and deep, proggy trance and techno, a sound that is undoubtedly deeply loved here in Naarm. We've been big fans of her mixes for @dreamsoftwarecorp, @rapturenetwork and her monthly show for @1020radio. Freya's mix for melt is as enjoyable, treating us to a gorgeous journey of chugging, psychedelic sounds.

Influences:
Catchy melodies which you could sum up as "pop", i think. Growing up I listended to lots of indie and emo/hardcore bands, my first encounter with electronic music was through Drum'n'Bass. For house music, the Leipzig Label KANN, the Electric Island parties at Conne Island and Nachtdigital Festival were big influences.

Remembering why we do this: it's for fun, it's about friendship and creating moments and settings in which we are free to enjoy ourselves. It's not about competition or judging but supporting each other - if a mix isn't on point that's negligible over enjoying music and time with the ones around you.

On Oct 6th 2021, about 2 years after my last set in London, I played from open to close (11pm to 5am) at Village Underground in Shoreditch. Here's a recording of the whole night with a bit of the crowd noise. 

Perhaps a full tracklist at some point... some unreleased stuff in here. 

Even though it had been a while, we had all night so no use in rushing things! I came across a lot of lovely music this year, but it mostly lived in my rekordbox or in a radio mix. I actually record a lot of my sets but it always feels like they're in a constant state of iteration, making it hard to pick just one "version" to release. Over the years I feel like this has led me to only very sparingly drop live-recorded sets. A "party" doesn't often lend itself to the archivable realm, maybe the memories are best suited to the ephemeral. 

Anyway, eternal gratitude crystals to those who came and those who danced, and to those listening now.

It was the first time I’d really considered how the track selection compliments the EP and vice versa. Theres been a lot of fantastic music released since the clubs reopened and most of this mix is new stuff I’ve been feeling in the last month or so. The end result is an ode to UK dance music.
