"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

Maxim's Dream

Inspired by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard’s influential text “Simulacres et Simulation,” Aho Ssan’s debut Album “Simulacrum” plays with synthesis and simulation, picking apart notions of modulatable, subjective veneers of reality.

Aho Ssan is the artist name of Paris based producer & composer Niamké Désiré.
After studying graphic design and cinema, he began to compose electronic music and create his own digital instruments.
Informed by his experiences growing up while black in the French suburbs, Niamké, turns a critical gaze towards facades of inclusivity and equality, and how they diverge from lived experiences of discrimination and racism in France.

For Sonic Territories extended he teamed up with Nima Aghiani (9T Antiope): “This performance is an improvisation by Nima (Strings) & me around my album "Simulacrum". The first piece is a brand new work we did for the occasion. It's always a huge privilege to work with him. 9T Antiope is definitely one of my favorite bands.” - Aho Ssan

Aho Ssan (@ahossan) is the artist name of Paris based Niamké Désiré. After studying graphic design and cinema, he began to compose electronic music and create his own digital instruments. Shortly thereafter he went on to win the Foundation France television prize for his soundtrack to the film of Ingha Mago in 2015 and has worked on several projects related to IRCAM/GRM in France. His debut LP «Simulacrum» was released on the 7th of February 2020 via Subtext Recordings.
Based on the concept of Jean Baudrillard, it navigates through society’s presentation of inclusivity and equality against my own experience of growing up black in France. Aho Ssan debuted “Simulacrum” at Berlin Atonal 2019.

For the label's second release, Pendulum Recordings presents Abyss Elixir, a 5 track EP from Berlin based French sound artist and producer Zoë Mc Pherson.

Abyss Elixir is an EP made to self-heal and with a transformative perspective. Using warm low frequencies, Mc Pherson creates a visceral atmosphere that is personal and contemplative, yet the listener is present. At times it feels so intimate that the listener wonders if they should even be there. Are they allowed to be there? Unlike a lot of Zoë Mc Pherson’s releases, there are no collaborations here.

In the artist’s own words:

“The overall tracks are meant for heavy sound systems that are able to hit your heart, but also to be played loud in your headphones while taking time for yourself. The whole EP is an elixir, made to mend, if you are able to allow that space and process what is happening. Whatever the mood, it is full acceptance, strengthening and developing your position, observing what is around you, its history and what changes, as well as what needs to change further.”

Mc Pherson opens the EP with “I Expect Nothing (Straight), a 12 minute moody composition with powerful vocals that are at times sultry and at other times maniacal. Singing “I Expect Nothing,” Mc Pherson’s vocals can quickly turn from soulful and enchanting to hysterically laughing from one moment to the next. The track has a natural groove as the journey builds and layers upon itself. While the entirety of Abyss Elixir is a narrative, “I Expect Nothing” is a composition within itself.

Over the 5 track EP Mc Pherson leads the listener on an introspective journey using dub rhythms, noise and experimental textures, and creeping sub bass. Playful beats juxtapose between moments of darkness and intensity. The EP concludes with the track “Bound To Spill,” a powerful closer that feels like a final purge. By the end, the listener is left to process their own journey and start anew.
