The longtime BBC Radio 1 host talks about the liberation of leaving broadcasting, her pivot to fiction writing and her party series, Before Midnight.

If you grew up in the UK, chances are you've heard Annie Mac on the radio. The Irish native started on the airwaves in 2004 when she was 26. She hosted a nightly programme called Future Sounds, before eventually moving to a Friday night dance music show, which catapulted her into the pop cultural zeitgeist. 

Being at the BBC was a boon to her career, but as she reveals in this Exchange—her second appearance on the series—it also came with its limitations. She left the media giant in 2021 to spend more time with her family, and to pursue her own projects without the inhibition of BBC codes of conduct on matters around free speech. Since departing, she has been outspoken about politics and engaged in ongoing advocacy work and calls for change as an independent curator and podcast host.

Annie Mac also speaks to Exchange host Chloe Lula about the art of interviewing; her popular party series, Before Midnight; her pivot to writing; how getting older has shaped her view of success; and what it means to lead the "good life." She has also published two novels, both of which pull from loosely autobiographical topics: The Troubles in Ireland, the music industry in London and bigger thematic arcs such as navigating motherhood and grief. These are some of the first records that pulled me out of French house and into the deeper side of electronic music: Shari Vari, Join in the Chant, What Time Is Love?, early I-F and Parallax Corporation, Alden Tyrell, Legowelt, Carretta, Agoria, and later the Gesloten Cirkel and Hacker cuts. Played in chronological order, they trace a clear line from early proto-techno and EBM into The Hague’s electro machinery and the darker European sound that came after it. I haven’t heard a lot of these in years, so the show is a way of going back to where it started, before jumping forward to the present with Blawan – WFT to close it out.

Rounding out an electrifying year, Sandwell District deliver a mix that both celebrates Bleep's album of the year End Beginnings and pays tribute to the man who helped them get this far. Silent Servant’s discography is a plentiful one and Sandwell shows it in all its colours, ranging from hissing electro to sputtering microbeats to revolving hardcore throb doused in mysterious ambience. Blissful ripples of soft rounded synth melody slowly flow into rebounding beats and slamming dub synths, transformed into tactile laser pulses and howling gusts of distortion. The predatorily strutting bass stabs of Sterile Hand’s ‘The Hunter’ is stealthy EBM under the cloak of night, contrasted by Tropic Of Cancer’s guitar twangs worked into slick yet turbulent percussive sequences Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Silent Command’ edited into a jittery, woozy lofi dream.

Ibiza has changed a lot. It isn't what it once was that's for sure.

However, from time to time you might just catch a glimpse of what it was and what it still means to an awful lot of people. Andy is an old friend of Ransom Note and for those in the know he's a bit of an unsung hero having worked behind the scenes at various record labels you probably love. He's probably signed some of your favourite records but he wouldn't tell you that himself.

Anyway, a few weeks back he sent us this mix which was a recreation of a set he played at Sundays At Pikes this summer. Pikes remains one of the last strongholds of the culture in Ibiza, a place which represents the very essence of the island and the state of mind.

Think balearic dreams, sunsets and all that jazz. It's the real deal.

Anyway, Andy soundtracked it and it made us smile.
