Next up on Bristol’s Born On Road Records comes a three-way collaboration of epic proportions. Having impressed with his outstanding label debut, the Hand Sign EP, earlier this month, Gillingham native DJ Gaw swiftly returns to the imprint, teaming up with long-standing Born On Road affiliate Selecta J-Man – who topped the Juno Download singles chart in July with “My Style” – for the infectious “Rum & Lime”. The pair are joined on the track by Bristolian drum and bass soulstress A Little Sound, the 21-year-old singer and TikTok sensation whose recent collaboration with Kanine, “Back in Time”, has already amassed over two million streams. 

Originally kept under lock and key as a dubplate special but now seeing a release due to great demand, “Rum & Lime” finds A Little Sound heavily interpolating Lily Allen’s world-renowned 2006 debut “Smile”, retaining Allen’s melodies but rewriting the lyrics with a summery and suitably rave-centric twist. Mostly staying true to the original track’s rocksteady sound, Gaw and J-Man intersperse the iconic ska strokes with stonking jump-up drops to make for a festival- ready anthem, bound to serve as the perfect soundtrack to this summer’s outdoor gatherings. 

Having teased the track via both TikTok and the label’s Goat Shed radio takeover last month, initial fan reactions certainly bode well for the future of this track. Expect to hear much more of it in the coming months, and keep an eye out for plenty more releases from the Born On Road family later this year.
