Danny Short is from Bolton. He’s also from a planet where 70s pastoral progressive music can co-exist happily with on-the-money noughties experimentalism.
Take ‘This Year Is Ours’ – rapturous 12-strings glitteringly reminiscent of ‘Trespass’-era Genesis but dragged by the neck into today by a beautiful melodies and harmonies, and some slightly worrying interferences in the background keeping it all the right side of pretty. But then there’s ‘Truth Made a Man Of Me', where submerged vocals and drones are a bed for another gorgeous melody to sink into and dream.
Imagine if AMM had written pop songs. You can’t? Listen then. Danny Short is in a place of his own, but he shares some of the universe with poetic souls like Six Organs Of Admittance and James Blackshaw. And this miserable old world needs more of this kind of beauty. Caressing musicianship, tunes to melt the hardest heart. Treat your soul.

Second line-up (1990-1993)

After employing a new vocalist, when Tim Harris moved to Devon, a new batch of songs were recorded. Mark Hoyle joined the group on vocals/guitar and Jay Taylor on bass/guitar, adding a new dimension to the music (previously in Dubsex and Dumb).

The group performed a few concerts locally, including one at Stockport Town Hall with The Fall.

This line-up was a studio band essentially, as they spent most of the time writing and recording in dead time at Strawberry Studios where Nagle and Adamson worked.

Thaw by What?Noise

Danny follows up his debut album (Collected Times) on Invisiblegirl with an EP. Another eclectic mix of pop, balladry, and neo-psyche-prog. Rich textures of guitars and voices again dominate the mix.
The opening “Make me happy” is unapologetically up-beat with a great verse and even better chorus. Dan throws us a curve ball with some quirkly banjo and some “found sounds” at the end but this is a classic tune and deserves the widest possible audience.
The epic “Monuments and Statues” revolves around a simple descending four note structure however layers of searing guitars create an epic soundscape. Probably the most progressive piece on the EP.
The power pop of “Apologies” has a great driven feel, unfortunately not radio friendly, but capable of getting most jaded lotus eaters of their feet to do the frug.
“It is discovered is” the type of pastoral ballad that Mr Short excels at, I’m reminded of the beautiful songs that Grant McLennan created for The Go-Betweens with “Foxtrot” era Genesis, added in to create what for me is a highlight in release full of gems. Very more-ish.
“Midnight Snowfall” continues the theme and echoes some of the material on Collected Times. An elegiac piece with delicate keyboard sounds, washes of synth and ethereal vocalisations.
The closer “Beyond the Numbers” is a wonderful piece of spacey psychedelia, with drones, and other glitchy sounds rattling away under heavily echoed vocals. This can be downloaded as a taster from the Invisiblegirl web-pages:

Review from iTunes: "Never thought I'd see this one on itunes. I can only put it down to the hard work of Julia Adamson at www.invisiblegirl.co.uk for reviving one of the greats of late eighties manchester music. This is a classic album, combining the akai sampler and processed guitars in a way that simply had never been done before. Chris Nagle, one of the three responsible for the album along with Julia Adamson and Tim Harris, was an artist with the Akai S1000 (attempts to bring him back on stage a few years back for a spot of improvised sampler noodling were sadly unsuccessful). The tracks he coaxed from the (at the time) state-of-the-art sampler were full of sledgehammer beats and end-of-the-world sirens, on top of which were laid slabs of distorted guitars feeding back to within a inch of their lives. The sounds became a blueprint for the more successful bands that followed such as Curve, but even the most left-field offerings from Dean Garcia and Toni Haliday sound commercial and polished when compared to the sounds on "fat". The new remasters here sound great, although "strange times" remains kind of an imposter, going against the What?Noise blueprint of single word song titles. Anyone growing up in Manchester in 1989 listening to KFM should download this now."

RAMIDE is an Italian DJ artist who creates tracks that blend a harmonic, melodic and polyphonic continuation of sound with exceptional rhythms . She frequently performs live, playing DJ sets; she says her music sounds like 'an androgen communication between culture and nature', - to us, it sounds jubilant and fresh. Graduating in cultural anthropology, Ramides' talents extend into designer jewellery (her full name being Raffaella Del Ferraro). She says 'my eclecticism reflects in my musical style but it is difficult to define my music'. Who cares when it sounds as good as this? “What?Noise brought out a single last year which all but swept the rest under the carpet and all but fried the minds of music hacks, leaving them squealing like stuck pigs about the vastness of their talent.  Apparently some BBC producers thought so too – 'Vein' was used as part of the soundtrack to a documentary called False Witness, about a doctor who killed his family with an ice-pick and blamed it on drug-crazed intruders who screamed “Acid is groovy, kill the pigs” as they tackled the job. Perhaps this gives you some idea where the band are coming from?  Guitarist Chris Nagle is responsible for the production of material by Dubsex and Suns Of Arqa -  and the Indian influence is clearly detectable on their upcoming EP, due out in September.  A gig at The Boardwalk on 22 July with fellow Stockport residents Rig and Hulme wonderboys Flea will hopefully confirm that they are capable of astounding feats in a live format as well as on record.  Three musicians and a monumental beat box provide a relentless driving noise often compared to Simple Minds (when they were good).  That good huh? No, much better actually. Slapdash

Track 6 from A Place In Space compilation of artists from around the world. This is 'Tundora' by Apologee And Pedlogee from Tokyo in Japan, A-ho (from Elevation, featured earlier on the CD) and her partner Takuro are Apologee And Pedlogee. Whilst Elevation is a punk edged group, with a Captain Beefheart guitar style influence, Apologee and Pedlogee have an altogether more electronic, melodic and minimalist approach to composition. The song written by A-ho and Takuro, is typical of A-ho’s ear for a good song arrangement and vocal delivery.

"CLOUDS - The Boardwalk, Manchester
All baggied up with somewhere to go, The Clouds are the latest in a long line of musicians bubbling out of the Stockport/ Strawberry Studio complex, a list that kicks off with 10cc (!) and runs through to the likes of World Of Twist and Intastella. 
The Clouds, though are less bubblegum kitsch than their recent neighbours, preferring to blast out a rougher-edge sound rooting deeply into the Sonic Boom side of the Spacemen 3 battlezone.
Droning guitars, long passages and controlled grunge is their kick, as five way too healthy looking late teens kick out their heads-to-the-floor wall of sound.
This is their third gig and yet they seem like old hands, varying the pace, letting the set build into explosive faster moments and lull into laid back cruise. Exploding out of mid-set, 'Dude Electric Cell' is a king of bass lines, a new pop moment that quits the lurking-in-the-shadows drones of the rest of the set.
A sharp detour from the 'Cathedral Of Sound' home country bands, Psychedelic without the bullshit, this is about as close as Stockport will ever get to Detroit." (John Robb)

Track 4 from compilation A Place In Space. Will Beckett's March Reprise ~by Stuart Estell.

Stuart is from Birmingham in the UK and is a classically-trained pianist, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Accompanied by his guitar, autoharp, concertina or perhaps mountain dulcimer, he performs his own songs, traditional English and Appalachian folk music, and some occasional covers, including George Formby! The track chosen for A Place in Space is ‘Will Beckett’s March (Reprise)’, an electric guitar masterpiece that feels like a traditional Scottish tune, but is an original composition. It is included on Stuarts second solo album ‘Mother’s Thinking Bath’. Other past and ongoing projects – including an acoustic performance of Harry Nilsson’s spectacular album ‘Harry’, a drone metal tribute to Sunn O))), and regular appearances with the Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra – suggesting that, despite his protestations, Stuart Estell isn’t just 'a brummie singing folk songs'. About the song.
"Wild Willi Beckett (real name Will Bennett) was a good friend of mine who died from cancer of the oesophagus in 2007. I knew him through the Monster Raving Loony Party; he was one of the party's old guard and had been a close friend of Screaming Lord Sutch before Sutch's death, and was a cult figure on the Bradford music scene with his group Psycho Surgeons. A lovely guy.

The album that the original version of the march (concertina/acoustic guitar) and the version with distorted guitars come from was recorded in tribute to him - all the track names are references to him and/or our mutual friend Mel (former deputy leader of the OMRLP).

His funeral was amazing - he and his brother Rick had prepared his coffin by painting it fluorescent yellow, with the OMRLP logo on it, electric guitars and various other things. He would have loved the fact that on the day they discovered that the paint they had used breached health and safety regulations and they weren't allowed to cremate him in it...
