Colloquially called "test-sample experiments", these studies in music and its sub-disciplines are traditionally done in labware such as producing studios, DAWs, bedrooms, and recording studios. Studies conducted using components of a song that has been isolated from their usual melodic surroundings permit a more detailed or more convenient analysis than can be done with whole melodies; however, results obtained from in vitro experiments may not fully or accurately predict the effects on a whole song.
