'Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol. I' is a devastating display of potential which ensures a journey unlike any you have encountered.  In the vast world of electronic music, where sounds, signifiers and gesture's are recontextualized to a numbing degree it is increasingly rare and refreshing to encounter a release as perspective distorting as the debut full length release by Rashad Becker.  The album is a masterpiece of focussed non-referential electronic environments.  It is is both warm, alien, paranoid and exhilarating.  Sounds are stretched in the most unusual manner, foreign bodies are frequent and the structure is simply bewildering.  Split into 'Themes and Dances', the 8 tracks guide the listener through Becker's brave new world.  Despite being entirely synthetic there are sounds which appear like a distortion of the world around us, on occasion 'voice-like' sounds are present, elsewhere there appears the sound of cicada's, only these cicada's are made of mercury and swim through time.

For its 7th release, IO SOUND presents nine reworks of Pinkcourtesyphone, the industrialist / ambient face of microsound composer and LINE label director Richard Chartier. On Line 1, twelve acclaimed sound artists from across the planet attend to the lost transmissions of Pinkcourtesyphone, creating a haunting work of interstellar ambiance, spaced-out deep techno, and industrialist IDM. Expect fully immersive audio from our earthly cousins on Raster-Noton, 12k, Dragon’s Eye, and Sandwell District.

On Line 2, Pinkcourtesyphone joins forces with Kid Congo Powers of The Cramps, The Gun Club, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Kid speaks with just a hint of malice in his voice, torturing the strange disco of diva Amanda Lear: “I am a photograph... I am in colour and softly lit, overexposed and well blown-up”.

IO SOUND transmits to you a new echo from outer space: an industrialist retouch of haunted techno, industrialist IDM, outerspace ambiance and darkwave house.

So, it's my next album single, and this time it's a bit crunching. There is a reason for this abomination lacking softness or melody though - the album is called "Human", and it's my attempt to translate some common themes about the human condition, into musical form. And of course not everything about being human is beautiful or pleasant - we experience all sorts of things, and this one is about the impacts of life, in the form of pounding mechanical collisions. It's a club track really, and if you've seen me in recent months you've probably had your face smashed by it a little - sorry about that!

Big thanks to Pitchfork for featuring this along with the amazing acid-style excursion from Gabe Gurnsey of Factor Floor.....AND....watch out for the Perc mix coming very soon, which takes the track to whole new labels of abrasion.

An album that sets out to examine sonic extremes, Max Cooper's debut Human juxtaposes a whole range of electronic styles:  lush orchestration fighting savage distortion, and clinical digital sound anchored by warm analogue grooves.  And nowhere is that restless curiosity to experiment as apparent as the contrast of the first and second singles - first, the delicate and downtempo Adrift, versus this second release, Impacts, the roughest, toughest sampler workout Cooper has produced.
On the album, they're sequenced in a focused line to be the centre of the album's first act and then its midpoint, before the album's more experimental final act.  But as a single on its own?  Impacts is a stop-start stomper that has had festival crowds asking WTF!?!? for months now, and the album's only purely dancefloor moment - as far from voguish k-house sounds as it is.  

But despite the harsh uncompromising sonic contrast - and this is a track that grunts into focus like a sledgehammer picking a fight with a gang of hi-hats - Impacts is, to Cooper's mind, actually something very optimistic.  It's the sound of a person beaten again and again by life, but each time bouncing back and wanting more.

For the remixes, Cooper has gone for two artists with their own take on high-contrast sonics.  Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor has folded his band's hypnotic acid tweaking into the original's rasping beats, and Perc has gone balls out with an take-it-or-leave it experimental sub-lead mix for the serious heads and big systems.

This is a mix to drink absynthe to. Living in Whistler is an exercise in musical & cultural isolation. I should’ve realised that trying to play music such as this in a “dude? where’s my skis?” culture was a lost cause. Even as I held down a residency at the Savage Beagle (in Whistler Village), attracting European djs & househeads (and filling the upstairs bar with head-nodding patrons), I couldn’t convince management (nor other local DJs/promoters) that what I was doing was worthwhile—or even popular elsewhere. “It’s hot in Berlin!” I would say—but it would matter not. Whistler is not the place for risk-taking mixing, subtlety, or experimental approaches to dancefloor semantics. So I present to you my manifesto of house music, mixed with abandon, and without precision.

This mix dives deep into minimal house & abstract rhythms. The psychedelic, drifting effects of ketaminimal, held for long, drawn out mixes, warps the head. I can dance to shit like this for hours.

This was the first mix I released where I used a Digital Vinyl System (Traktor Scratch). All manual beatmatching, and no prepared records.
