Creative Lives podcast 5,”Intergenerational cohesion: Generations, culture, and identity”, presented by Lorna Collins, with guests Michelle Kindleysides and Charlotte Faircloth. 

Charlotte Faircloth is Associate Professor in the Social Research Institute at University College London. From sociological and anthropological perspectives, her work has focussed on parenting, gender and reproduction using qualitative and cross-cultural methodologies. This research has explored infant feeding, couple relationships, intergenerational relations and, recently, the impact of coronavirus on family life.
 
Michelle Kindleysides is Head of Health & Wellbeing at Beamish Museum, a large Open Air Museum in County Durham.  Her role is to develop and facilitate a unique programme of group activities and events at the Museum to help support the health and wellbeing of people living with a range of health needs in the community.  The team began with supporting people living with dementia, both in the community and living in residential homes, and has been diversifying its programmes for the past 8 years.

This episode is a recording of UCL's "More than the right to vote: feminism and citizenship" event, held on 17 February. The panel includes: Professor Sasha Roseneil (chair), UCL Pro-Provost (Equality & Inclusion) (Chair) Dr Victoria Showunmi, UCL IOE Professor Joyce Harper, UCL Institute for Women's Health Professor Ann Phoenix, UCL IOE Event information: Despite the long struggle for women’s suffrage, which was finally won in Britain on equal terms to men in 1928, the right to vote did not grant women fully equal access to political decision-making. Although there have been significant changes over the past four decades, women remain under-represented in politics throughout the world. Moreover, political citizenship is just one dimension of citizenship. Feminist scholars have argued for an understanding of citizenship as multi-dimensional, encompassing not just the terrain of politics, but also economic citizenship, social citizenship, intimate, sexual and bodily citizenship, and religious and cultural citizenship. 

In this panel, academics from across UCL discuss the unfinished business of securing full membership and belonging of society and its institutions for all women. The panel aimed to shine a light on the research of feminist scholars, open up understandings of the multi-dimensional aspects of citizenship, and provide a space to discuss the continued consequences of women’s exclusion to full membership and belonging of society and its institutions.  Panellists each gave a short talk, followed by cross panel discussion, with an audience Q&A. About the Lecture:

This lecture is about the author's practical introduction to critical realism, which won the International Association of Critical Realism annual book prize. The book is based on an annual course conducted at IOE since 2007. The book is a clear time-saving introduction for postgraduate students, researchers, supervisors and lecturers. After decades of conducting sociological research, the author was concerned about gaps and contradictions in the main paradigms. These are addressed in the first chapters, with ways in which critical realism helps to resolve them. Interactions between structure and agency, and whether research can be value-free are then addressed. Two frameworks that greatly help with data analysis, the four planes of social being and four stages of transformative change, are explained, with a final chapter on how critical realism informs effective research. The critical realist concepts are illustrated with examples about health, but they apply to any discipline.

About the Speaker:

Priscilla Alderson
Emerita Professor at IOE - Social Research Institute

Since 1991, Priscilla Alderson has worked at the Social Science Research Unit, now in the Social Research Institute UCL. Her research covers many aspects of health and education, ethics, childhood and children’s rights, and is reported in over 300 publications. In 2014, she started leading the UCL critical realism postdoctoral course, founded by Roy Bhaskar in 2007. Her latest research, published in a series of open access journal papers, is detailed on the UCL website about children’s consent to heart surgery.

We thought that we’d start the series by painting a bit of a picture of what research looks like here at the IOE, and there’s no one better to help give us a sense of what’s going on than Alison Fuller, Professor of Vocational Education and Work and the IOE Pro-Director of Research and Development. 

Rob and Alison discuss the kind of role IOE research has played over the years, and what’s in store for us in the future, particularly as we try to quickly understand and navigate the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

The future of Education and Social Science research | Research for the Real World

In this episode, Dr Rob Webster is joined by Professor Alice Sullivan to explore how the act of reading for pleasure as a child has positive influences that extend to later in life.

First of all, we find out what is reading for pleasure, and what makes it different from other kinds of reading styles? Is it teachable? Are there differences in the impacts between printed and digital material?

Using data from the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70) which follows the lives of over 17,000 people born that year, Alice and Matt Brown analysed the changes in vocabulary between the ages of 16 and 42. The research found that those children who read for pleasure made more progress in vocabulary and maths than their peers - and those that continued reading into middle-age experienced larger vocabulary gains from reading high-brow fiction.

We also try to understand the importance of longitudinal data and how it informs research findings in many areas at each stage of life. How do participants in large-scale studies such as BCS70 feel about this?

Alice also explains the kind of role policymakers, schools and families can play to foster a lifelong love of reading. Perhaps during these times of social distancing and isolation, it’s an opportunity to recapture that love and appreciation of reading?

How longitudinal data reveals the benefits of reading for pleasure | Research for the Real World

Dr Rob Webster is joined by Professor Louise Archer to explore how challenging dominant representations and educational practices can help make this possible.

Research led by Louise has found that students are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), but certain factors stop them from moving into a relevant career in the field. So what’s holding them back?

We also learn about the concept of ‘Science Capital’, the concept developed by Louise and the ASPIRES project team to help understand patterns in science participation and engagement, and how it is applied in schools and in other educational settings.

We also find out how Louise and her colleagues approach their research projects, even before any fieldwork starts, and before any results are shared. The pair also discuss how the current climate emergency and the coronavirus pandemic might foster a new generation of scientists. What can policymakers do to help realise that interest?

How 'Science Capital' can help us address inequalities in STEM participation | RFRTW

It’s the season 1 finale, and it’s Rob’s turn to be grilled. Gently, of course. Dr Humera Iqbal explores the role of teaching assistants, how valued they are by schools, and their importance in the current climate.

Prior to his move into academic research, Rob’s educational journey began as a teaching assistant, so it is fair to say that he has “walked the walk” in order to be able to “talk the talk”.

Rob explains the evolution and role of TAs, starting off as parent volunteers in the late 1970s through to their formalisation in the 1990s. Today, the number of TAs in English schools rivals that of the population of Iceland - over 380,000.

The focus of Rob’s research is on TAs and how they support disadvantaged pupils, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Rob’s involvement in the landmark Deployment and Impact of Support Staff Project (DISS) investigated how TAs affected learning outcomes.

We also find out how findings from the research prompted Rob and his team to develop a programme, Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants (MITA), aimed at TAs to improve their interactions with pupils as well as developing their confidence and leadership capabilities.

Finally, Rob and Humera discuss how TAs will be perceived and treated in the current climate and the future, where education budgets are threatened and schools embark on plans to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic. What will this mean for them, and for the children they help?

Maximising the impact of teaching assistants | Research for the Real World

Award-winning filmmaker, Steve McQueen, joins Paul Gilroy for a conversation on the motivation for his 'Small Axe' film series. McQueen addresses making something that is Black and beautiful in depicting justice and freedom, and how art can give recognition to Black British lives by shoring up “who we are, where we came from and what we contributed to this country”.

Public Health Disrupted - Trailer

Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement have dominated the headlines in 2020 and taught us multiple things about people and organisations.  The research appears to be more heavily, if not completely, focused on responses to Covid as opposed to the equally important matters of social justice and racial equality brought to the forefront by the BLM movement.  However, there are important leadership lessons to be learned from both crises that can impact the future of organizations.  We will explore five of these lessons focusing on what we have learned at a societal, organisational, and individual level.
